Just a few quick questions for a friend of mine:

He and some other friends are looking for a nice, simple introduction to roleplaying and one of them in his searches found this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dungeons-Dragons-Basic-Game-v3-5/dp/0786939443/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214157048&sr=1-8

While personally, I'd be happy to guide them through 3.5 D&D using only the basic rules and slowly adding in another couple of rules over a couple of weeks at a time, I think that's the basic intentions of the box.

So I was just wondering if someone could give me the pros and cons of the box?

Hard question. As far as I understand it, this is basically a board game version of D20. I quite like the looks of it on Board Game geeks (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/17804), but I know there have been a number of these produced in various guises over the years. I think the 2000 version was supposed to have been the best,.

I used the box to get into D&D. It contains instructions for simple combat, contains a set of dice, some figurines, and 4 pre made characters. It also comes with a board for the adventure with it, which when flipped over contains a blank template for a dungeon or field.

I'm pretty sure that's what my old roommate first used to get into D&D, though if I remember correctly, there were two "starter set" boxes. If it's the one my roommate had, it has premade characters, a pre-made adventure, some minis, a board or map of some sort (don't remember what, exactly, but I think it's like Killersquid mentioned), and I think a paperback copy of the PHB v3.5. If it's the other one, though, I'm not sure.

Really, if you're looking to start, it's a decent way to start if you plan on playing 3.5, but you're going to eventually need more than it contains.
