I assume you're talking about in 4E, and you are indeed correct - the PHB does not have the Bard. The Bard will be in a later book. (Probably the PHB2 next year, or maybe an Arcane Power sourcebook at some point.)

For a Bard-type multiclass, play a Warlord/Wizard, taking some of the Illusion powers from Dragon 364.
