It doesn't work that way.

Just thought I'd get that out of the way

(No, you cannot retrain a power up to a higher level power. You can replace it at certain levels, but retraining doesn't work that way.)

It doesn't work that way, period.

My period doesn't work that way.

Periods work my way; doesn't that?

Alright, then, but does retraining work this way?

I was about to respond to two or three threads, all containing someone screwing up how retraining works. :)

No, you cannot upgrade your level 1 daily power to a level 5 daily power when you hit level 6. Quite a lot of people seem to think that this is how it works, however.

Right... there are certain levels where you get a power swap for encounter and daily powers... however you do not get to use the retraining you get at every level to increase the level of existing powers.

Of note: You never get a power swap for utility powers, so you will always have that level 2 Utility :)

AH ha!

If you use the multiclass feats, you can get a de-facto retraining.
At level 10 you can trade out that level 1 daily for a level 10 or lower daily from your multiclass. Right?

No, powers gained by multiclassing must be of the same or lower level than the powers that you swap for them.

You also, as a Wizard, can't prepare their number of daily powers as any daily spells in their book. I don't think anyone has made that mistake yet though.

Good advice costs nothing and it's worth the price.

The progression looks like:
Encounter class attack powers:
1
1/3
1/3/7
3/7/13
7/13/17
13/17/23
17/13/27

Daily class attack powers:
1
1/5
1/5/9
5/9/15
9/15/19
15/19/25
19/25/29

You can take lower level powers for a given slot, but that is the only thing that retraining lets you do.

Paragon path encounter and daily Attack powers are in addition to the above. I'm not absolutely certain if you can retrain/swap them out or not. Anyone have an answer to that?

Retraining and Swap only states Class Powers, so you retain all of your Paragon and Epic path powers always.

Does swap work for class powers gained through Paragon-era multiclassing? :)

You get 1 free Power/Feat swap per level. However, the swap is only for something of the same level, unless you are exchanging heroic/paragon Feats for paragon/epic Feats when you are of level to do so.

This is seperate from the eventual loss of lower tier powers. For example, when you you reach level 15, you get the level 15 daily power and drop the level 1 daily power.

Multiclassing in place of a paragon path grants you powers which can be swapped (http://www.enworld.org/showpost.php?p=4323238&postcount=42).

Nitpicking: You have the OPTION to drop the level 1 power. You could choose to retain the level one and not obtain the level 15, if you want.

Or you can keep your level 1 power and retrain the level 5 or 9 one, if we're nitpicking.
