At the bottom of the advance search page, there's a check-box that say "Also search in child forums". I'm wondering what that means, as I've never seen or heard of anything called a child forum on this website

I think they're sub-forums, I'm not sure.

That must mean the other forums are Parent Forums. The Forum itself as a whole is Old Grandfather Forum.

Not to a programmer.

When the structure of the forums is mapped in a diagram, it tends to resemble the diagram used to map a family tree. So programmers use familial terminology.

Same goes with anything else that can be mapped as a tree structure.
