As the title suggests I'm essentially a gaming newbie I've never played a D&D game however I know enough of the rules to not need the basics explained (usually) so basically I would like to know where I should start, any suggestions are welcomed.

Well, first of all, welcome to the fold! Where you should start depends on a few things: first, do you want to play face-to-face games, or internet games? Second, what game systems do you want to play with?

If you want to play face-to-face, you should look for groups in your area, on the web and in local game shops, libraries, bulletin boards, and so on. A few of the more intellectually-inclined school extracurriculars might be worth looking about in: my first group, for example, was from my chess team.

If you prefer to play over the internet, we have a whole subsection of the forum devoted to play-by-post games, and a few IRC/ game-client games pop up now and then. If you go for the IRC games, then they'll probably have the type of program that's used for the game listed in the opening post of the thread. I should warn you, though, that non-D&D games are a little uncommon around here; if you want to play Shadowrun, Exalted, World of Darkness, or anything like that, there are probably specialist sites that are better for your needs.

Please let everyone know whatever else you need to know.

Edit: Also, myth-weavers.com (http://www.myth-weavers.com) is a good place for storing your character sheets, and d20srd.org is a good reference to have available if you play over the internet.

What edition did you learn? Although 4th edition is fairly popular, there are a number of people (myself included) that are sticking with 3.5. Make sure you know which one somebody is playing before you join their game.

First, buy a couple of books for whatever it is you're playing. Always helpful.

Next, when it comes to games, you have two choices:

1) Play with other people who are also new to the game. They'll probably be your friends who you convinced to do so. None of you will be fully aware of what's going on, but it'll balance out because nobody will complain if the rules get fudged a little.

2) Find people who know what they're doing and join with them. This will mean going through the internet or your local friendly gaming shop to find a group. You'll have to catch up to these people, who will have long-winded gaming stories and have forgotten more about the rules than you currently know, but they'll help you stay up to speed and will generally try to help you have a good time.

Both are fine options. Your mileage may vary as to which sounds more attractive. When I was in your position, I ended up choosing both.
