View Full Version : Mythos Vestiges IV: At The Mountains of Madness

The Demented One
2008-07-19, 10:07 PM
The multiverse is home to many strange and alien creatures, but it is perhaps the most terrible and inhuman of these that are known to scholars of the occult and forbidden as the Outer Gods, the Great Olds Ones, the most alien and horrible aspects of reality. Though some men, half-mad fools of cultists, worship them as gods, this is not the truth. They are best described as Cosmic Horrors, the ultimate evils born of the multiverse itself. They care little for men, though some, such as the Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathotep, take an interest in the mortal races. However, some cultists and scholars of occult have devised rituals and rites for contacting these Great Old Ones, and tapping their power. Although they are not like vestiges, trapped between worlds, they exist partially within the same dimension vestiges do, allowing binders and users of pact magic to tap their strength. Forbidden passages in ancient tomes such as the Necronomicon, the Book of Eibon, and Unaussprechlichen Kulten discuss the methods for binding the power of the Great Old Ones, and dire warnings of the consequences for taking them lightly. For, although the Old Ones are willing to allow mortals some of their power, it is never without dire consequences.

Basatan, the Scuttling Cancer
The Great Old One Basatan dwells beneath the sea, creator of all crabs and crustaceans.

Vestige Level: 2nd
Binding DC: 18

Legend
Basatan is a Great Old One who sleeps in a fortress of coral built deep beneath the waves. Though his physical body is dormant, his mind remains conscious and aware, seeing the world through the eyes of all crab-kind, the clawed crustaceans being servitors created by the Scuttling Cancer upon his arrival to the world.

Basatan's cults are few in number, and his power is paltry compared to those of others who sleep beneath the sea–Dagon and Hydra, progenitors of the Deep Ones, or the legendary horror that is Cthulhu. Nevertheless, his followers have devised rituals to bear his mind within themselves, allowing him to see the world through their eyes as if they were his own arthropodian servitors.

Manifestation
Basatan manifests within his seal as a hulking, vaguely humanoid body formed from the overlapping bodies of hundreds of crabs. Though he does not speak, the snapping of claws forms a pulsing beat, drawing the Binder into a near-trance in which Basatan can communicate directly with their minds.

Sign
Crab-like legs and claws occasionally reach out from the mouth and other facial orifices of those bound to Basatan, waving about briefly before withdrawing.

Influence
Those bound to Basatan become intensely greeding, coveting particularly gems and pieces of jewelry.

Granted Abilities
Basatan transforms those bound to him into crab-like servitors.

Aberrant Carapace (Ex)
A hard shell forms over your flesh, granting you a natural armor bonus equal to half your Constitution bonus, minimum +1.

Evasive Scuttle (Ex)
Whenever an enemy provokes an attack of opportunity from you, you may instead take a 5 ft. step. Doing so still counts as your attack of opportunity.

Skittering Charge (Ex)
You may use this ability as a swift action whenever you charge. If you do, you do not have to charge in a straight line, and the bonus you receive on the attack roll increases by +2. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Snapping Pincers (Ex)
You grow two crab-like claws, which are primary natural attacks and deal 1d8 damage. You can still hold and manipulate items with your claws.

Ghroth, the Harbinger
A living planet, Ghroth is the herald of the Outer Gods, spreading madness throughout the multiverse.

Vestige Level: 6th
Binding DC: 28

Legend
Ghroth is one of the few Outer Gods who does not reside in the darkness at the heart of the universe. Taking the form of a living planet, he flies through the universe, acting as the herald of Azathoth and the rest of that hellish court. Ghroth sings a maddening music known as the music of the spheres. Any planet he passes by inevitably falls into ruin, whole civilizations driven to insanity by Ghroth's unholy song.

Ghroth's cultists have created a binding ritual, a rite that uses certain chords and melodies of the music of the spheres to evoke Ghroth, allowing those loyal to him to bind his aspect to their souls.

Manifestation
Ghroth manifests within his seal as an orb of red light which throbs and pulsates like a heart. What sounds like an invisible choir of a thousand children can be heard, singing with the voice of Ghroth.

Sign
The voice of those bound to Ghroth echoes oddly, resonating and reverberating even in areas where it would not normally echo.

Influence
Those under Ghroth's influence will compulsively lash out verbally at others, mocking and taunting them, trying to drive them to madness.

Granted Abilities
Ghroth grants those bound to him the power to evoke maddening music.

Chord of Madness (Su)
As a standard action, you can sing a brief chord from the music of the spheres, powerful enough to temporarily throw your foes into discord. All enemies within 30 ft. of you must make a Will save, or else be affected by the chord. During their next round, they must automatically attack the target nearest to them, friend or foe. Creatures forced by the chord of madness to attack their allies employ all methods at their disposal, choosing their deadliest spells and most advantageous combat tactics. They do not, however, harm targets that have fallen unconscious. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Sidereal Flight (Su)
You gain a fly speed of 20 ft, with good maneuverability. You also gain Fly-By Attack as a bonus feat.

Unbalanced Mind (Su)
While bound to Ghroth, you are immune to being confused and to Wisdom damage, drain, and burn. Any creature that attempts to read your mind must make a Will save or be dazed for 1 round.

Mordiggian, the Charnel God
A ghastly Great Old One worshiped by the ghouls and other undead, Mordiggian holds sway over the realm of death.

Vestige Level: 6th
Binding DC: 28

Legend
Mordiggian is an unholy undead being, a Great Old One who is master of death and the undead. It takes the form of a living void, draining away and consuming all life it comes into contact with, leaving only the undead spared. Though of dread aspect and tremendous power, Mordiggian is less feared that the other Great Old Ones. Unlike the others, he rarely unleashes his destructive powers, only turning his wrath on the living if so evoked by his ghoulish cultists. Many ancient cultures, even those who normally had no dealing with the occult, would offer up their dead to Mordiggian, hence his title as the Charnel God.

The ghoulish cultists of Mordiggian have created binding rites that allow a fragment of the Charnel God's essence to be fused to the soul of a loyal cultist. As Mordiggian's reputation is less infamous than those of his fellows, even good Binders have drawn on him on scant occasions, using his necrotic powers to nobler ends.

Special Requirement
Mordiggian requires his seal to be drawn over the entombed corpse of a dead humanoid.

Manifestation
The tomb on which Mordiggian's seal has been drawn is shattered, and the corpse rises up into the air. It speaks with a hollow, rattling voice, its jaw moving unnaturally and disturbingly. Once the pact has been made, it withdraws back into the tomb.

Sign
The shadow of those bound to Mordiggian swells and grows, seeming to be cast by a man several feet taller than the Binder, and moving of its own accord.

Influence
Mordiggian requires those bound to him to perform burial rites for any dead creature they encounter, whether it be an entombing, a cremation, or a more exotic funerary ritual such as mummification or an air burial.

Granted Abilities
Mordiggian grants you a ghoulish form and the power to drain the life of your foes.

Ghoulish Jaws (Ex)
You gain a bite attack as a primary natural weapon that deals 1d8 damage. On a critical hit, your bite attack deals x3 damage.

Summon Ghouls (Su)
As a full-round action, you can summon one Ghoul for every 4 Binder levels you have, which appear immediately and act on your turn. The Ghouls can remain summoned for as long as you remain bound to Morrigian, but you must take a swift action each round to sustain this effect or they disappear. You cannot use this ability again while any summoned ghoul’s remain, and once this ability’s duration has ended, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Veil of Undeath (Ex)
You are healed, rather than harmed, by negative energy, and gain immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, and disease. If you have the undead type, then you instead gain bonus hp equal to your Charisma modifier times your Binder level.

Void Burst (Su)
You can unleash a blast of disintegrating energy that drains your foes’ life. As a swift action, you may charge your bite attack with negative energy that disrupts matter, causing the next bite attack you make before the beginning of your next turn to deal an additional 2d12 damage. For every 5 damage dealt, you gain 1 point of temporary hp, which lasts for as long as you remain bound to Mordiggian. Any creature reduced to 0 or fewer hit points by this ability is entirely disintegrated, leaving behind only a trace of fine dust. If the attack misses, that use of the void burst ability is wasted.

Nyog’Sothep, the Nameless Mist
A mysterious Outer God, little is known that of Nyog’Sothep. He is said to take the form of a vast mist that can envelop whole kingdoms, and none know what horrors might lurk within it.

Vestige Level: 7th
Binding DC: 32

Legend
There is little to be said of Nyog’Sothep. Even his name is nothing more than a cipher—Nyog’Sothep, in the black tongue of the Outer Gods, simply means “hidden name.” Nyog’Sothep has no cults and is not recorded in any of the great eldritch texts. The Revelations of Glaaki, scribed by a Great Old One, are thought to allude vaguely to him, but that is the limit of all that is known about the Nameless Mist.

The binding rituals for calling Nyog’Sothep are thought to have been given to mortalkind by Nyarlathotep himself, ever ready to give mankind another gift with which to destroy itself.

Special Requirement
Nyog’Sothep does not place any restrictions on those who can bind it, but there are dangers to doing so. Every time you bind to Nyog’Sothep and make a bad pact, you must make a DC 25 Will save or take 1d6 points of Charisma drain.

Manifestation
Nyog’Sothep manifests as a pillar of mists, swarming with phantasmal eyes and mouths.

Sign
A faint cloud of light mist surround those bound to Nyog’Sothep, clinging to them.

Influence
Those bound to Nyog’Sothep begin to lose their concept of self. They will not refer to themselves, and will gradually cease to think of themselves as individuals the more they bind to Nyog’Sothtep.

Granted Abilities
Nyog’Sothep grants you power over mist, and also cloaks your identity.

Devouring Mist (Su)
As a standard action, you can create a cloud of mist that drains the life of those within it, creating a 20-ft. radius spread of mist that is 20 ft. high. The mist is like that of the fog cloud spell, and also deals 1d12 damage to any creature other than you or your allies that is in it. As a move action, you can move the cloud of mist up to 15 ft. The mist lasts for 1 round/level. You cannot create another cloud of devouring mist while an old one still remains, and once the duration of this ability ends, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Mistform (Su)
You may use gaseous form on yourself as a standard action. You can remain in gaseous form indefinitely. You lose access to all other supernatural abilities you have while in mistform. Once this ability’s duration has ended, you must wait 5 minutes before you can use it again.

Shroud of Mist (Su)
You are shrouded in a veil of mist that both conceals your body and hides your mind. You gain 20% concealment, and gain immunity to effects that alter, read, or probe your mind, as the mind blank spell. You do not gain the benefits of this ability if you do not show Nyog’Sothep’s sign.

Rhogog, the Bearer of the Cup of the Blood of the Ancients
Created by the Great Old Ones from the blood of Cthulhu, the shapeshifter Rhogog schemes to bring about the rise of his father.

Vestige Level: 1st
Binding DC: 17

Legend
In ancient times, Cthulhu is said to have clashed with Hastur, a lesser Great Old One, engaging in savage violence. Though Cthulhu easily overpowered and dispatched the Unspeakable One, Hastur did succeed in spilling a scant few drops of Cthulhu’s blood. While Cthulhu barely noticed his wounds, a cult of lesser aberrations conspired to take his blood, and with it created Rhogog, a shapeshifter born from the blood of the Great Old Ones. It is said that he is fated, along with the Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathotep, to play a role in the rise of Cthulhu from R’lyeh.

Unlike most of the old ones, Rhogog is free to roam the world as he pleases, and has drawn many cultists to him. The most faithful have been rewarded with knowledge of a ritual that can be used to bind an aspect of Rhogog to themselves, drawing on the power of the sacred blood he bears.

Manifestation
Rhogog manifests within his seal as a black tree that oozes blood, and is warm to the touch.

Sign
Spiraling patterns, hot to the touch, drawn in red and black manifest on the skin of those bound to Rhogog.

Influence
Those bound to Rhogog become obsessively protective of their selves, and might go into fits of panic or brutal rage if they seem their blood shed.

Granted Abilities
Rhogog transforms those bound to him into pseudoabberant monsters, lending them unholy might and vigor.

Abberant Form (Ex)
You gain Aberration Blood (http://www.realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Aberration_Blood,LoM) as a bonus feat. In addition, for every 6 Binder levels beyond 1st that you have, you may choose another aberrant feat to gain as a bonus feat. You must meet all prerequisites of these additional bonus feats.

Blood Calls to Blood (Su)
You can communicate verbally with any aberration or with any outsider native to the Far Realm. They will understand whatever language you speak, and you can understand theirs in turn. In addition, you gain a +4 enhancement bonus on all Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate checks made to influence such creatures.

Brutal Slam (Ex)
You gain a slam attack as a primary natural weapon that deals 1d6 damage.

Medium Armor Proficiency
You are proficient with medium armor.

Unholy Vigor
While bound to Rhogog, you gain 1 additional hp, plus an additional hp for every 2 Binder levels you have, rounded down. In addition, if you fall to 0 hp or less, you automatically stabilize.

Ubbo-Sathla, the Unbegotten Source
A primordial being thought to have spawned all life, Ubbo-Sathla slumbers beneath the frigid ice of the southernmost reaches of the world.

Vestige Level: 8th
Binding DC: 40

Legend
A huge protoplasmic mass that dwells in subterranean caverns beneath the icy wastes of the south, Ubbo-Sathla is thought by his cultists to have been the progenitor of all mortal life. An shapeless and mindless demiurge, Ubbo-Sathla is revered by occultists and mages alike, believing that contained within the very flesh of Ubbo-Sathla is the knowledge of the gods themselves, occasionally made manifest to mortals in the form of stone tablets, written on in alien texts, that extrude from the flesh of the Unbegotten Source.

It is from one such tablet that the secret rites for binding Ubbo-Sathla was taken, though the cultist who transcribed the rite lost his life to Ubbo-Sathla’s blind hunger. His apprentice, however, took the transcribed ritual from the master’s hands, and fled, eventually spreading the blasphemous rite among the cult of the Unbegotten.

Manifestation
Ubbo-Sathla manifests as a huge, amorphous shape, like a blood-red tumor the size of a man. Living creatures, ranging in size from insects to men will occasionally extrude from the protoplasmic mass, only to collapse into slime as soon as they cross over the boundary of the seal.

Sign
Those bound to Ubbo-Sathla lose their native form, becoming a man-sized, protoplasmic masses of slime and ooze.

Influence
Those under the influence of the Unbegotten Source lose their power of intellect. While their native intelligence is not affected, they cease to concern themselves with it. They will not speak, use logic or reason, or use Intelligence-based skills, acting instead on instinct.

Granted Abilities
Ubbo-Sathla transforms those bound to him into protoplasmic masses, endowing them with profane strength.

Aberrant Pseudopods (Ex)
You gain two slam attacks that deal 1d10 damage as primary natural weapons. In addition, you gain a +10 enhancement bonus to Strength. You do not gain the benefits of this ability if you do not show Ubbo-Sathla’s sign.

Amorphous Form (Ex)
Your body becomes protoplasmic and shapeless. Any magic items or armor you wear merge into your amorphous body, and continue to grant you their benefits. However, you cannot hold or manipulate items, and cannot wield manufactured weapons. You can move through openings or holes as small as 2 inches in diameter. You are immune to poison, polymorphing, and stunning, and cannot be flanked. Whenever you would be dealt extra damage by a critical hit, sneak attack, or similar source of precision-based damage, there is a 75% chance that the damage does not apply. You do not gain the benefits of this ability if you do not show Ubbo-Sathla’s sign.

Binary Fission (Su)
As a standard action, you can divide yourself in two, creating a copy of you that appears in an adjacent square. The copy thinks and acts as you would, and follows any commands you give it. The duplicate has all of your abilities, but no duplicate items are created. You may, however, choose to transfer any number of items to the copy. The copy is bound to all vestiges that you are at the moment you use this ability, though it cannot use this ability to create further copies. If you or the copy use an ability of a vestige that requires you to wait 5 rounds before you can use it again, neither of you can use it until those rounds have passed. The copy can cast spells, manifest powers, or use similar abilities if you can. If the copy casts a spell, then it expends one of your prepared spells or spell slots; it spends your power points to manifest powers; and uses any daily uses of your other abilities for its own. The copy has hp equal to your own at the time you use this ability, but any spells, powers, or similar abilities affecting you do not affect the cop. The copy remains for 1 round per Binder level, after which it rejoins with you. You take damage equal to half the damage dealt to your copy, though this damage cannot reduce you to less than -9 hp. Any ability drain or ability damage dealt to your copy carries over to you when the copy rejoins with you, but any other abilities affecting it do not. If the copy is killed, it does not rejoin with you, but you gain a negative level, and cannot use this ability again for as long as you remain bound to Ubbo-Sathla. Once this ability's duration has ended, you cannot use it again for 5 rounds. You cannot use this ability if you do not display Ubbo-Sathla's sign.

Blindsight (Ex)
You gain blindsight out to 30 ft. You do not gain the benefits of this ability if you do not show Ubbo-Sathla’s sign.

Fast Healing (Ex)
You gain fast healing 5 whenever you are at 50% or less of your total hp.

Vorvadoss, He Who Waiteth in the Outer Dark
Vorvadoss is the advisor of Azathoth, a cold and dispassionate god who constantly plots and schemes.

Vestige Level: 6th
Binding DC: 28

Legend
Vorvadoss waits in the darkness at the center of the universe, ever scheming. He acts as advisor and vizier to Azathoth, guiding the mindless idiot god with his words. Vorvadoss rarely directly intervenes in the world, instead staying in the court of Azathoth and using his influence over the Seething Nuclear Chaos to subtly manipulate the world. Vorvadoss’s cult is tied to that of Azathoth, and his name is often mentioned in incantations to Azathoth by cultists who seek his aid in bargaining with the god.

The ritual for binding to Vorvadoss is derived from an older ritual that allows Azathoth to be invoked. By changing certain key incantations and using simpler, less powerful binding seals, cultists found that they could summon He Who Waiteth in the Outer Dark instead of Azathoth.

Manifestation
Vorvadoss manifests as a humanoid figure of green flame, who dances constantly within his seal.

Sign
The seal of Vorvadoss appears in green flames on the palms of those bound to him.

Influence
Those bound to Vorvadoss become fascinated and obsessed with music, bursting into alien and dissonant songs or frantic whirling dances during moments of high emotion.

Granted Abilities
Vorvadoss grants those bound to him some of his power as a manipulator, as well as the ability to evoke the powerful emerald flame he is master of.

Emerald Flame (Su)
As a standard action, you can hurl a bolt of green fire that consumes all flesh at a single creature within 30 ft. of you, requiring a ranged touch attack to hit. The green fire deals 1d8 Constitution damage to those hit by it, with a Fortitude save for half. Creatures immune to fire damage and immune to this ability, and creatures with resistance to fire take one less point of Constitution damage for every 5 points of resistance they have, rounded down. Creatures vulnerable to fire take a -4 penalty on their save, but take no additional ability damage. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Fiery Dance (Su)
As a move action, you can teleport up to 30 ft, vanishing in a blast of fire. Any creature adjacent to you takes 2d6 fire damage, with a Reflex save for half.

Scion of the Emerald Flame (Ex)
You gain the fire subtype. You gain immunity to fire, but become vulnerable to cold.

Vizier’s Guile (Su)
You gain a +4 enhancement bonus to Charisma. In addition, you may use dominate person as a supernatural ability, with caster level equal to your Binder level. Once you have used this ability, you cannot use it again for 5 minutes.

Yidhra, the Dream Witch
An Outer God who was once a living being, Yidhra attained immortality and aberrant godhood by following a dark and twisted path of evolution.

Vestige Level: 4th
Binding DC: 22

Legend
Yidhra is the oldest living being to be born of the world. She was among the first single-celled micro-organisms created by Ubb-Sathla. Unlike the rest of mortalkind, Yidhra, unlike other mortal creatures, was constantly evolving and mutating, changing to adapt to any threat she was presented with—an ability bestowed on her by the Unbegotten Source. Yidhra’s power of adaptation eventually led to her immortality, as she changed and mutated to surpass death itself. Eventually, she transcended mortality, becoming one of the Outer Gods.

Yidhra’s cult is small, as the newest of the Outer Gods has only recently begun to take on mortal cultists. However, she has spread her binding ritual among them, allowing her cultists to take on a fragment of her power of evolution.

Manifestation
Yidhra manifests within her seal first as a globule of protoplasmic slime. The protoplasm eventually grows and forms an arthropodian, lobster-like creature, which then sprouts tentacles and takes on a soft, octopus-like form. The cephalopod then grows scales and fins before growing legs and becoming a reptilian creature, which then grows her and becomes a lupine beast. Finally, the wolf grows into the form of a beautiful woman of the same race as the binder, who then explodes into a cloud of radiant light.

Sign
Those bound to Yidhra sprout a protoplasmic pseudopod from somewhere on there body. After a few minutes, the pseudopod turns into a crustacean claw, and then to a tentacle. It turns next to a serpent, and then to a diminutive wolf’s head, before turning into a miniscule human hand, and then reverting back to a pseudopod. None of these limbs can be used to hold items or make attacks with.

Influence
Those under Yidhra’s influence become concerned only with their own survival, without any compassion for the life or well-being of others.

Granted Abilities
Those bound to Yidhra gain the ability to adapt to and overcome any danger.

Damage Adaptation (Ex)
Whenever you are damaged by a weapon, you gain damage reduction, which can only be overcome by any damage type that weapon does not deal. If you have any other form of damage reduction previously granted to you by this ability, you lose it. The amount of the damage reduction is equal to 1 plus one-quarter of your binder level, rounded down.

Energy Adaptation (Ex)
Whenever you are dealt energy damage, you gain resistance 5 to that energy type. If you have any resistance to another energy type previously granted to you by this ability, you lose it. If your Binder level is 14th or higher, this energy resistance increases to 10, and if it is 19th or higher, it increases to 20.

Evolutionary Healing (Su)
You can use cure serious wounds, neutralize poison, or remove disease, targeting only yourself, as a supernatural action. Once you have used this ability, you must wait 5 rounds before you can use it again.

Evolutionary Resistance (Ex)
You gain a +3 resistance bonus to one save of your choice, determined when you first bind to Yidhra. You can change which save it applies to as a move action.

Playing a binder in your games is a pleasure, Demented.

I particularly like Nyog-Sothep (but then I've always been mad for Fog spells) and I think you did Mordiggian, Yidhra, and the Emerald Flame justice (even if I'm sad there was no Irresistible Dance on that last one).

Maybe I'm just bad at ranking non-spellcastery bindings, but Ubbo-Sathla feels a little weak for a 8th level, particularly compared to Yog-Sothoth (Dimension Door, Greater Teleport, Time Regression, constant Blink) or Azathoth (Wall of Fire, Insanity, immunity to confusion/wisdom drain, that cone of fire/not-fire). Compared to those two, the Unbegotten gets a pair of slam attacks that he has to use, +10 enhancement to str, blindsight, fast healing 5, and immunity to polymorph/poison/75% of critical hits, but runs the risk of his Influence, which is that he can neither speak nor think. Also, he makes Houdini look like a hack magician and he can squeeze through a keyhole, which is really neat, but a little lackluster at 17th level.

Any ideas? I'd originally had him with a blasphemy/word of chaos ability that he could use once every 5 rounds, but I felt that made him a bit overpowered and didn't quite fit the flavor. Maybe some sort of ability like the fission power...

Fission would be a neat addition and fit pretty well thematically (plus seems about right power-wise, a level 13 psion ability as a 17th at-will with a 5 round cooldown time), but Amorphous Form absorbs your magical equipment into yourself. Fission is supposed to create a copy of you with no magical items. I'm not sure how well the two abilities would gel.
