View Full Version : Having fun with Soul Cali IV

Just picked up Soul Calibur 4, and I ran through character creation, trying to make approximations of OOTS characters. Obviously, there are going to be some problems and differences. Especially since I haven't unlocked all clothes and costumes yet, but I managed to do a few people.

Also, please note that I am VERY sorry about the quality of the pictures, but I don't have a video capture card, so I had to take these with my Cell Phone, very sorry.

Those look like they'd be really cool, if you had good pictures of them. Can you add weapons, or is that not until the actual gameplay screen?

Those are really good.

Yeah, you can have weapons, Roy, Haley, and Elan all have them, though it's hard to tell.

Unfortunatly, I don't have video capture, so I don't know how else to get pictures. My friend gets back from vacation in a couple weeks, and he has that ability, so we may just have to wait :(

Edit: Any other requests? I can't really do Durkon or Belkar because the game will only allow for the same height. Also, Miko is kinda out because there is no 'daisho' fighting set (well, there IS one, but I can't seem to use it to make custom characters, which is frustrating.) Also, I've seemed to hit a brick wall with unlocking stuff. To get the next tier of stuff, I need to beat this neigh impossible challenge, that ivovles beating six guys with three, the last two have 150% health, auto guard impact almost everything, and they hurt you when you GI. So, yeah, that's not going so well.

Can you do Thog?

Borris
2008-07-24, 01:18 AM
From what I can make of the pictures, these look pretty accurate. I wish you good luck with the unlocking: it can only mean even better characters. And if you do want to try to make another one right away, may I suggest Hinjo? He shouldn't be harder to make than the characters you have now, and I'm sure he'd look cool as a SC character.

Degausser
2008-07-24, 05:10 AM
I made Hinjo and Thog (though he is sans fangs, naturally), but I can't post them without them being the same crappy quality as the first ones (I tried using my webcam to take pictures, but they came out even worse.

I know it's a longshot, but does anyone know of a USB device (or some other device) that will let me plug my PS3 into my laptop? I was going to try and find one anyway, since my TV isn't HD, and I REALLY don't want to buy a whole new TV. My laptop, as I said, doesn't have videocapture capabilities. I know chances are rare, but I figured I'd ask.

you cant screenshot to your computer?
Besides, I think you should just connect the video and audio jacks to your CPU, if possible, and make a screenshot.

Degausser
2008-07-24, 05:38 AM
I don't . . . I don't even know how to respond to that. There needs to be some sort of sarcasm button on the internet.

Working from the assumption that you are flaming me because what I've asked was, evidentally, stupid, I'd just like to say that it doesn't seem like a crazy idea to me. There are USB cameras, video capture devices, scanners, and a variety of other visual-imput things out there, so is it too off-the-wall to think that maybe someone had come up with a way to decode a coaxial signal and display it on your computer screen without buying a $300 video card? Now, obviously, I'm no computer guru, and it may not be possible the way computers are wired, but I figured I'd ask.

If you weren't flaming me, and you actually thought that way, then . . . well . . . uh, no. Computers don't work like that.

There are things like USB Capture Devices (here's a Tiger Direct link (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1428), although you can Google around for other places). I've never used one though, and I don't know how well they'd work with a video game console.

Wow, thanks man. It says right there on the site that it supports all styles of video, and even has the line "You can play your PS3 on your home computer or laptop" which is, if I'm not mistaken, the exact thing I want to do.

I'll head on down to Yokohama (I live in Japan) tomarrow and see if I can't find some version of this tomarrow. It's only $30. THANKS for the find.

I can't really do Durkon or Belkar because the game will only allow for the same height.I was thinking that might be the case, but isn't Yoda an unlockable character in that game? You'd think that if they have a short character pre-installed, that you ought to be able to make custom short characters, too.

Yoda is unlockable in the XBox 360 version, I have the PS3 version, which has James Earl . . . I mean Darth Vader.

Also, there is some stuff that come characters have that I can't use (or at least haven't unlocked.) Basically, there are these special characters that Namco made, and they have cool stuff, but I can't use it to make custom characters.

This is particularly frustrating because there is an Elf Face (with pointy ears) that I'd like to give to V, and one girl fights with Cervantes's style but is wielding a two Katanas, which I would like to give to Miko. I'm hoping there is a way to unlock them in the game, but I don't know the criteria for unlocking stuff yet. It just kinda randomly happens sometimes when I fight.

Out of curiousity how did you get Soul Calibur IV five days before it is released in North America, six days before Europe, Japan and Australia and seven days before the UK?

I'm kinda confused myself, but here is more proof that I didn't take poor screenshots at E3

Like I said, I live in Japan. To be more precice, I live near Tokyo. I bought the game in Akihabara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akihabara), when I went there the other day to pick up a second PS3 controller and a webcam, and imagine my suprise and delight when I saw SCIV for sale at the local import shop! I figured, if anyplace in the WORLD is going to have the videogame before it's street date, it'll be Akihabara.

Finished Nale, Sabine (human form) and Miko. Here are the fighting styles I used for everyone. Though not perfect matches, keep in mind I'm limited by what styles I can choose.

1)Roy: Sigfried (obvious)
2)Haley(Raphiel) There is no 'bow and arrow' style, and Haley did use a rapier that one time . . .
3)Elan (Amy, fencing) Dashing swordsman, right?
4)Thurkla (Mitsurugi) As I recall, she only fights with one blade, so I felt Mitsurugi was most appropriate.
5)Varsuvius (Kilik) I know V doesn't use weapons in the comic, but I felt a quarterstaff was most appropriate for a wizard.
6)Thog (Asteroth) Duh.
7)Hinjo (Misturugi) Duh.
8)Nale: (Raphiel) Tough call on Nale. He says he prefers 'Longswords' with no shield, which would give him the possibilities for Xiangwa, Yungsung, Raphiel, and Amy. The demenor of Raphiel seemed most appropriate.
9)Sabine (Taki) Like V, Sabine doesn't use weapons (just claws) so it was kinda hard, but with all the flying around and stabbing that Taki does, it seemed the most appropriate.

Edit: No, not all lightsaber attacks are unblockable. Apparantly everyone's weapon has a cortis weave . . . MAN I am such a nerd.

Finished Redcloak, who came out pretty neat. Unfortunatly the "Cloak" and "Necklace" slots are the same, so I had to choose between his Holy Cymbol and his cloak, so I gave him the cloak. Like I said, I'll upload all of these within the week, if I am able to get the USB video capture device to work.

Also had fun Making Tsukiko, weilding Tiera's ring

I now have:
(Evil)
Redlcoak
Tsukiko

OoTS:
V
Roy
Haley
Elan

Liniar Guild:
Sabine (Human form)
Nale
Thog

Saphire:
Hinjo
Miko
Thurkla

Any others anyone can think of? I'm going to make a generic Hobgoblin, and maybe the shadow dancer or assasin.

Keep in mind I cannot make Xykon, Durkon, or Belkar (unless you are okay with them bing human sized.)

Yea unfortunately images on the TV to a computer is limited in terms of video input :)

There is a USB device that you can have video input and put on your screen. It is not a stupid question. Not everyone knows this who is not a computer savvy. You also COULD get a special video card that does this too, but that is a lot of spend on a single project. The card is good for input and output video in/out of your computer.

My friend use this to do captioning for anime fansubs.

Sorry all, I just bought the video capture device and it doesn't work :( Apparantly my computer doesn't have any USB 2 ports, which are required. Thus I can't process enough 'bandwidth' through the USB port to look at it. I know, I know, but imagine how I feel! I just spent 5,000 yen (about 50 bucks) on something that is useless to me. I'm just going to have to wait until my friend comes back, and we can take screencaptures with his compy.

Well done.
I suggest making Zz'dtri next, it wouldn't be that hard with Cervantes's style.

Also, Anyone else think of the connection between Roy and the character whose move set he's using?

Already have him done, along with most of the rest of the Linear Guild.

Also, Roy uses Sigfried, but Horrace Greenhilt uses Nightmare's style. Haley uses Raphael, Elan uses Amy, and Female Roy uses Lizardman (Sorry, there is no 'shield and hammer' style, shield and axe is the best we got.)

Is O-Chul possible?

Well, depends. First of all, have we ever seen him when in Paladin atire? (I can't remember.) For some Reason, Soul Cali IV doesn't allow for beards (just 'scruff' This is why Nale and Hinjo don't have gotees) If he had a somewhat unique costume, then I'd go for it. But i it's just the normal Paladin Getup, Then I'd basically just make Hinjo bald and there we go.

I guess I could always make Prisiner O'chul, but that'd just be a dude in his skivies. There isn't even a scar decal for his body :(

First of all, Degausser, thank you for posting these designs. Would you be willing to tell us what equipment you used, as well as which colours you adjusted?

If I'm correct, for example, Haley has the leather trousers (possibly with no change in colour, though it looks like you might have deepened it a bit and possibly shifted it slightly toward red) and the tight shirt (shaded brown and with a numerical value between 5 and 9). I don't see the quiver, but that's because you only get the choice of either that or the shirt, and the hunter's garb or kunoichi tights probably don't quite fit. I can't make out the boots -- leather? Hair is obviously in a pony-tail, made red.

V has the circlet and the wonder jacket (dyed red, with purple edging), but I don't recognize either the trousers of the boots. Roy's got Nightmare's greaves and chainmail, but I can't identify either the fauld or the breastplate at the moment. I recognize the veil on Therkla (even if I can't identify it by name) and assume that she's wearing it with the priestess' headdress, both shaded dark blue, but I don't recognize the rest. No idea about Elan, though at least I know that's a vest. Tsukiko got the butterfly stockings Amy wears, but I'm not sure about the boots.

Paladin's pauldrons on Hinjo were a nice touch. Does Thog have the warthog breastplate? A shame about the beards and goatees, as you've noted, but also about the limitations on frizzy hair -- the "afro" design wouldn't work on anyone short of Nabeshin (from the Excel Saga anime) -- which makes an accurate depiction of Sabine more difficult. Throwing her into the schoolgirl outfit she wore back in this strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0342.html) would be easier, sadly, as would be portraying her in her assumed guise.

While you could never build Belkar to scale, I was thinking you might be able to build him to proportion with a muscular male build. (Start with maximum attack and medium armor options?) You'd probably have to give him Taki's fighting style, however -- Cervantes' blades are both too large. Still might not work, but I wanted to throw the suggestion out there anyway.

Once again, nice work.

Sure, I'll post the stats/information.

Incidentally I toyed around with making 'stilt Belkar' for a while, but I decided he didn't look enough like the original. He would obviously use Taki's style.

Note: I've changed some of the appearances since of posted, now that I've unlocked all the gear and bought the downloadable extra gear for $1.50 of of PS3 Online store.

Yeah, sometimes it's cortosis, sometimes it's cortis. For example, I believe in KoTOR it's called Cortis. May be wrong though.

Thank you again, Degausser. I'm limited to the standard version equipment (3,000,000 gold in purchases later, as I've yet to complete the tower, let alone all of the challenges on levels I have completed), but this should still be fun.

Oh HEVANS no, I haven't compleated the tower.

Unlocking 30 achievments/rewards (Xbox360/PS3) will also unlock all armor sets.

Oh, just an FYI, if your gaving difficulty getting cash, I suggest going online. You get 2000 for every fight you win, and it's pretty fun besides. Otherwise, your going to need to grind storymode, which isn't so bad, as you can also level up fighting styles at the same time.

So now that the stats are up, would anyone with a camera or something mind making the characters and posting a pic?

Sorry guys, screen caps didn't work out. It's so annoying that I have an internet connection, I have the game, I have the game system, and I can't transfer a stupid picture. I'll keep you apprised of what I've got, in the meantime, I'll post some more templates. I havn't posted pictures of these yet, but here are the templates:

I'll try one last thing before I give up: My computer has a port for a second VGA monitor, and I've heard that there are HDMI to VGA interface plugs out there. If I can get my hands on one of those, I might be able to play SC on my compy, giving me what I want. I'll see if they aren't real or if I can't find one.

ALSO, if I know I've said this before, but if anyone has this game AND can take screen caps, I think you would be doing all of us a favor if you could make these guys up and give us some pictures.

Oh, just an FYI, if your gaving difficulty getting cash, I suggest going online. You get 2000 for every fight you win, and it's pretty fun besides. If it wasn't for regularly playing against a friend of mine, my loss ratio would not be about 90%... nearly always in three straight fights in which I land maybe a single hit. :smalltongue: Losing points every time I finally crawl within reach of a new level is very tiring. Won't mind so much after I hit 20th, though.

Nah, I just played through story mode long enough to get everyone up to 7th to 9th level, including custom designs for a few character types. As for the Tower, we're stalled on level 56 right now, thanks to those lizard men. Still, it's not the first time a level seemed invincible. (Invisibility S? On Asteroth? And then on Hilde, Setsuka, and Zasalamel? You sadists!)

Built a Redcloak, but the design doesn't quite look right. Gave him a Cassandra fighting base for lack of a better choice, but his Critical Finish option has me thinking it might be better to go with Sophitia, or possibly Ivy. Thoughts?

Also, thanks for posting the Guild.

Well, your doing better than me in terms of the tower. It took me forever to get past lvl . . . I think 17-20? The one where the character has life steal, auto guard impact S, and you have a very small time limit? It took me several hours to beat that one. I finally got lucky with Darth Vader by chucking her into the drink with his 'overhead' throw.

I have a redcloak. I gave him Lizardman's fighting style, as it was the most "manly" I could think of. I wish we could have the fighting weapons of the 5 custom girls. The girl with the Tetsubo (big club) using Nightmare's style would be the best, I think.

Here is my Redcloak Template, best I could do.

Redcloak: Skin: Green, Hair:None, Face:7, Body: P:25, M:25
Neck: Dark Knight's Cloak (Red)
Shoulders: Pauldrons (Grey)
Under: Chain Mail (Black)
Chest: Demonic Gear (Black)
Arms: Executioner's Braces (Default)
Pants: Kusakuri (Black, Red)
Socks: Shinobi Tabi
Feet: Nightmare's Greaves (Mostly Black, Red belt)

While it doesn't look exactly like him, it is a green dude in hulking army who looks intimidating, and that's the best we could hope for.
