View Full Version : Recommend me some bands?

So lately, I've been trying to listen to a broader variety of stuff than I normally do. I thought I'd come here to see if any of my fellow playgrounders had any recommendations. I'll listen to almost anything except rap and pop. So, ok. Any questions, just ask.

EDIT: Thought it might be helpful if I listed some bands and singers I liked. Here they are, in no particular order: The Dubliners, Flogging Molly, Voltaire, the Pogues, 3 Inches of Blood, Cab Calloway, etc.

So are you saying you want band that are nothing like the ones you listed, or are sort of like them?

Anyway, heres some bands from a wide variety of genres...

Duke Ellington (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GohBkHaHap8)
Daft punk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8K90hX4PrE)
Zao (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjcTMtiHZio)
Led zeppelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9i2fqxSjTI)
cake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKax7euEM5Q)
I'll let you know if I think of any more.

I'll listen to almost anything except rap and pop.
Just to be cussed, I'm going to suggest a load of hip hop acts that you might like even if you don't like the stuff you hear on the radio. If you listen to this lot with an open mind and still don't like them then you can probably safely say you don't like hip hop...

Jurassic 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgYAgB0lDug)
DJ Format
MF Doom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQakz9-kvfI) (he's collaborated with Adult Swim, what's not to like?)
De La Soul
A Tribe Called Quest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRrM6tfOHds)
The Roots (the best live band in hip hop (tm))
Massive Attack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIKnLwra6rk) / Tricky (the early stuff in particular)
Wu Tang Clan (just don't take the kung-fu gangsta lyrics too seriously)
Roots Manuva

Oh and DJ Shadow, although a lot of his stuff has basically passed beyond hip hop into a thing all of its own.

(Now with some videos. Warning: may contain bad language and 80s urban fashions)

For Irish music (like the Dubliners) I really like the Wolfe Tones and Athenrye (though they've both broken up by now, I think, and it's expensive to buy their CDs if you're in the US), and a lot of people I know love the Chieftains, though I haven't really listened to them that much. If you like Flogging Molly, you might also like the Dropkick Murphys, who do a lot of punk/rock renditions of old Irish tunes ("Fields of Athenry," "Finnegan's Wake," "The Wild Rover," etc.).

For other music, I'll just list some bands I've been listening to recently.

-Eisbrecher (German "industrial" group, I guess - I'm not up on genre names)
-Brobdingnagian Bards (folk)
-Mötley Crüe (metal)
-Scorpion (rock/metal/whatever - I particularly like their newest album)
-Tone Loc (old-school hip-hop, but definitely not "rap")
-Falco ('80s German new wave-type music)
-Paul Simon (might be considered "pop" but he's a classic)

And that's all I can think of for now. You can find most of those on YouTube, probably.

Well given the awesome bands you've already listened to I'd recommend Korpiklaani, Eluveitie, the Cruxshadows, and the Decemberists

^ out of all of those the only one I don't listen to is the Decembrists. My girlfriend likes them, but for some reason...eh.

From my own eclectic collections:

Ensiferum
Folk Earth
Within Temptation
Evergrey*
Tristania
Therion
Edenbridge
Demons and Wizards
E Nomine*
Visions of Atlantis
Lacuna Coil
The Underneath**

*These two tend to draw really heavily on the Bible/Christianity. Not necessarily a bad thing, just figured a heads up was appropriate. I also make no claims for random language shifts. Not everything I listen to is in English...

** Japanese Metal/Rap group. Listen at your own peril. :)

I also recommend the Decemberists, am too big of a fan to not mention Damien Rice (whether or not he fits your tastes), Modest Mouse, Tom Waits (who I want to be when I get older), and I'm also a big fan of Bright Eyes. Oh, and Leonard Cohen is very important, especially lyrically.

The results: I really liked Duke Ellington, Daft Punk, and Zao. Everybody likes Led Zeppelin. I didn't listen to any of the stuff Jorkens suggested (I'll get around to it eventually, I promise). I really liked the Wolfe Tones and Gaelic Storm. Brobdingnagian Bards are probably my new favorite band next to the Dubliners. Everybody likes Motley Crue, and Raistlin, all of those go without saying (except U2; Bono annoys me). I haven't listened to any of the others, but stay tuned folks.

Tom Waits
Tom Waits is brilliant. Probably the best places to start (his back catalogue is huge and rather varied) are Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Big Time, or Closing Time.

Re folk - Planxty and the Boys of the Lough are great for trad Irish stuff, and The Sweeneys Men are good too - sort of like the Dubliners, they were a bit cheesy in their selection of tunes (Black Velvet Band, Macalpine's Fusiliers type stuff) but I guess they were doing them before they turned into cliches, so fair play. They also incorporated everyone who was anyone in Irish trad at one time or another.

My absolute favorite Irish folk record is 1975: the First Album by the Bothy Band. They've got a really nice approach, bringing out the energy and earthiness of the traditional tunes, with just the right balance of traditionalist restraint and modern exhuberance.

Most of these bands aren't around anymore (I think they were mostly the ones that spearheaded the Irish folk revival in the sixties and seventies) but their stuff should be possible to get hold of.

Spiers and Boden (and their 'folk big band', Bellowhead) are worth checking out for english material - which seems to get a bit overlooked in the states - they do a good assortment of shanties and morris influenced stuff. They manage to bring a lot of fresh energy to the music while keeping the traditional rhythms and instrumentation, which is great. And Martin Carthy is the godfather of course.

For folk rock I'd suggest checking Fairport Convention's album Liege and Lief. It's sort of like Led Zep or Hendrix would sound but with folk instead of the blues. Skip the tune set in the middle, though. Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick's solo careers had their moments, too...

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a free association session...

ps will try to edit some good links into my first post...

[Big list of Bands, number 2]

Some great bands there. I mean, I spent most of the Spring semester listening to stuff CCR, The Animals, Hendrix, Sabbath, and similar bands for my "Music of the Vietnam" senior seminar term paper. In fact, I've still got the YouTube playlist (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=AD1527EC467F1AE2) from when I had to give my presentation on it (since there was no way I was gonna try to find all the songs and burn them onto a CD).

Also, I can't say I've ever really been all too impressed by King Crimson or Yes.

Sneak
2008-07-28, 06:16 PM
Well, "overrated" isn't really a meaningful term. All it means is "many people love it, but I don't think it deserves all the praise it gets." Which is a completely subjective matter in most cases. Personally, I'm not a huge Queen fan—I find them to be "overrated." I really like Cream, though, and Clapton as well.

Perhaps a band's influence on music or society can be overrated, but saying that a completely subjective aesthetic quality like a band's music is overrated just doesn't mean anything other than "I don't like it and other people do."

Well, if you wanna blow out your speakers from a death metal overdose, I suggest:

Decapitated
Amon Arath (forgive my spelling)
Dethklok
Ghoul
Suffication
& and I also highly suggest Metallica, even though they are a little bit lighter than the bands above. (also, they did a killer version of "Whiskey in the Jar" originally done by The Dubliners...)

On a completely random note I also recommend (not metal):

Sublime
Third Eye Blind
Nirvana, and basically any grunge including Pearl Jam and Alice and Chains.

I just find his guitar playing to be pretty predictable. Also, if you aren't liking Yes/King Crimson, you just haven't listened to them enough. It's a very acquired taste.

Moff, that's hardly fair. You can't rebuff someone saying they don't like your favorite bands by saying "Oh, you just haven't heard enough. EVERYBODY should love them, if you don't, it's just because you haven't taken the time to listen."

As for Eric Clapton being predictable, some people (Myself included) find shredders like Malmsteen (For example) to be predictable. That doesn't change the fact that the guy's got serious chops. Same goes for Clapton.

I think you're misinterpreting my position. For a lot of people, Progressive Rock is an acquired taste. When I first heard King Crimson, I didn't really care for them, but after giving them some more time to sink in, I found the appeal. I'm not saying that "you'll love them if you listen to them enough", I'm just saying you won't know until you try.

Of course Clapton is fairly predictible...he's very rooted in blues. Doesn't mean he's not a great guitarist.

As for my recomendation, here are the bands I've been listening to a lot recently:

Diamond Head (oldschool metal from late 70s/early 80s)
Sodom (German thrash metal)
Kreator (more German thrash metal)
Destruction (I really like German thrash)
Coroner (Swiss thrash metal; very technical)
Fields of the Nephilim (gothic rock)
Bad Brains (oldschool hardcore punk)
Slayer (satanic/gore thrash from US)
Deep Purple (70s hard rock / proto metal)
Witch (great stoner rock/metal from USA)
Municipal Waste (very energetic modern thrash from USA)

If you are up for some wierd jazzy metal give Atheist a try, especially their 2nd album "Unquestionable Presence".
