For those just reading, or have recently been shown this thread, the idea is to take a completely minor and unecessary character (in this case Guy with a Halberd) and lobby for his reapearance/cameo.

those wanting to join are simply asked to show, some kind of support (most commonly a signature link or slogan.)

For more information, see my first post on page 2.

Here are the pictures and their ready useable links for easy posting

Take a bit part character and lobby for his return.

In this case "The Guy with a Halberd"
http://http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0432.html

with enough people posting something like this in their signature, sending messages to Rich Burlew, or using other forms of word spreading it may be possible to actually get someone like this guy to become a recurring character with a name.

That would be insane if this grassroots proposition actually works .

Not going to work.

You would be better off writing some fan's fiction about the character. Burlew does not pander to the base.

Also, as a friendly reminder, it is against the forum's rules to post altered images of his comic anywhere on the site. You may want to edit your signature there.

Why so pessimistic? I mean, I know Rich himself stated that he doesn't change the comics at all no matter what people post, and I know that guy is probably dead (unless we can find him on the ship somewhere), but can't you at least let people have their fun?

I think I'm gonna join the Random Guy with a Halberd fanclub and at least see if we ever get a smiley made for us.

Occasional Sage

Also, why railroad somebody else's plot? This isn't an RPG where the story line is interactive. This is Rich's story that he's telling the way he wants to; if he sees an idea on the forum and likes it enough to incorporate it, grand. Otherwise....

Everyone I turn into an avvie looks like they're going to burst into song. Have you checked the Avatarist awards in my sig? I'm famous for it. :smallwink:

Edit: BTW, the avvie is 117 by 82 pixels. You need to specify the right dimensions otherwise it ends up a bit stretched.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder whether this should focus on the more feasible idea of creating an Azure Guard Club (then working our way up to lambasting the giant).

what do you guys think?

If so, would you be able to make more avatars and smileys for it Trazoi?

2008-08-04, 11:23 PM
The whole Azure Guard? They're basically the same two models with different weapons.

I don't think I have the time to make an army, but I can make the SVG I used to make the Guy with a Halberd available. It's then just a question of making new weapons and poses, and if someone's keen, the female model.

I know Rich himself stated that he doesn't change the comics at all no matter what people post,
I would say posting a check for 6 figures or so would have a serious effect on the strip. On a rather trivial level, there have been a number of changes to the strip due to writers finding spelling or other editorial errors.

Making the Guy with a Halberd(hereafter known as GwaH. Or maybe George.) a recurring character would be awesome. I was the treasurer of the fan club for a while, but then I found better things to put on my sig.

Well, he could have survived and joined Haley's Resistance.

Anyway as for the Giant not catering to the fanbase, what about Kazumi and Daigo? Maybe he had always planned for them to survive, but maybe he kept them around because the fans really liked them.

And don't forget about the bandana paladin a lot of people liked. He was later shown climbing Mount Celestia. Couldn't that have been a small nod to the fans?

While we can't expect the Giant to write around our opinions, I think it'd be cool to see him give some of our favorite bit characters a cameo or two.

Probably not. He had to go to special trouble to introduce them in the first place. While that did not guarantee their current role, or even their survival for long, it did mean he had plans for them before anyone could call for them to stay in the story. It seems unlikely their role has been expanded.

And don't forget about the bandana paladin a lot of people liked. He was later shown climbing Mount Celestia. Couldn't that have been a small nod to the fans?
It is at least more possible. The picture pretty much called for somebody to be there, so why not something that seemed to please some readers? But it might alternatively been the figure most easily placed in the area, or just the first one his eye fell on when considering who to put there.

(Header to new viewers: the main goal of the GwaH [guy with a Halberd] group is to lobby for his return at a later strip in the comic)

wow, when I first posted this idea I was practically lambasted for even mentioning it. I'm really glad now that it is actually seeing support..

At this point. It is up to each individual person to decide which way they want to spread it. Any funny or wacky signatures furthers the goal of this grassroots organization (WWGwtH was pretty good). Not to mention posting a note in your signature is the easiest to do.

Trazoi has been generous enough to post an avatar and smiley of the GwtH(Guy.With.the.Halberd) for use as well (it can be found in this thread).

Also, my signature has a link to a strip that actually shows GwtH talking for several frames.

Couple things need to be decided:

Should we have a formal ranking system? Or would you rather have it as a "choose your own rank" system? Or should we not have one at all?

we need to brainstorm a few ideas on how to spread the word (My only two at the moment are "post wacky sig" and "Letter ninja the Giant").

If you have thought of a really good slogan or any such thing like that don't be afraid to post it in here.

Also, I advise you to put a link back to this thread if you are using your signature so others can have a connection to the information it gives.

I will be contributing my own stuff as well.

I was the same way. At that point in my life I was really heavy into huffing arcane nether dust. I spent most of my life looking for "just one more extra dimensional fix"

Then GwtH Halberd came up to me and brought me out of that magic induced coma. It would be a crime to not see him reappear in the Strip!

I hope don't think that's what you meant to imply, but....

Sorry to be pessimistic, but I think the most you're likely to get is a marked grave for him when azure city is liberated...

It doesn't matter particularly whether he stayed in Azure city or boarded Hinjo's junk, both groups have undergone a good few encounters without sufficient resurrection capabilities (because Durkon doesn't have the material components required, or if he does, he's saving them for Roy), so I think it's just a matter of attrition...

So, IMO, best case is a marked grave- possibly a sarcophagus with a stone effigy if you're really lucky, but only if every other dead Paladin gets one.

Wait. what if we use monkey grip to dual wield halberds

Trazoi needs to make a banner like that

Also, GwaH could have his halberd enchanted with distance and returning. That way he can throw them at people and have them return!

Only problem is, you cannot make a potion of true strike (because it is a range of personal). :smallfrown:

By the way Coplanter, I have a gaming group who loves the idea as well (I actually told them before starting this whole thing).

sword and fist:
You use a wider variety of sizes of weapons.

Prerequisites: base attack bonus +3, weapon focus with the appropriate weapon, Str 13+

Benefit: you can use one melee weapon that is one size larger than you in one hand. For example a halfling with the monkey Grip feat can use a longsword in one hand. you suffer a -2 penalty on your attack roll when using this feat. this feat can be taken multiple times, each time with a different weapon.

Normal: only weapons of your size or smaller can normally be wielded with one hand.

As for this, does that mean we can dual wield halberds?

I am fighting with a halberd in one of my campaigns. It is a pretty cool weapon. I had no idea about this thread... until I just visited it by accident.

No no no, you see, monkey grip allows you to use proficiently one weapon one size larger than yours, if you pick lets say, a greatsword, you can use a large greatsword the same way you would use a regular greatsword, and a regular greatsword the way you would use, well... a regular greatsword, thus, you cant use two handed weapons one handed by taking the monkey grip feat. And since a halberd is a two handed weapon, it cant be used as a one handed weapon by the means of applying monkey grip to it.

Don't forget, he's also in comic 533 no really, in panel 7 in the bottom right hand corner. There also appears to be a girl with a halberd .

I'm certain that Rich won't go out of his way to make room for a character just because the fans want him to. However, as has been brought up before, there will always be times where "extras" will be needed. That's what I was planning to do, the first part, Magenta Dementia was all about GwaH fighting hordes of nameless magenta-belted soldiers, while the second part Tale of Two Halberds, was about the epic combat between GwaH and toGwaH. Don't worry, the avatar I made is in vector format and thus not ripped direct from the comic (I did have that page open as a reference next to it so I could check I got the helmet and halberd right, as well as a source for the right colours). He was originally a model I made for Keldorn from Baldur's Gate 2 who had similar armour. Once you've got one soldier model done it's pretty easy to use it as the base for any other.

I'll see if I can pose the original SVG vector file somewhere so that those of you making other art can use it. It will scale better and you won't have the pixelisation problems.

I'm working on a GwaH origin story. How he came to wield a halberd, how he joined the Azure Guard, etc.

Hmm, I got something. How about we hold a backstory contest. Anyone who wants to participate posts their own backstory of GwaH.

I played around with the concept a little. Exploring what happened after Trazoi's picture. Since we don't have any established canon for this guy, here goes my own version of events, in three mute pictures.
The hock on the halberd is all wrong but this is so quick'n dirty it's embarrassing.

I considered a last picture where he leaves the burning Azure City behind him. A project for later mayhap.

looks pretty awesome. I particularly like when he takes off his helmet, the hair gives him some individuality, which the GwaH sorely needs.

As for Nevitan, the spell is supposed to make it nearly impossible to miss, so I suggest adding some kind of magical nether cord to the picture that springs out of the halberd to guide it towards the intended target.

Wow, two days away from the forum and the fan club grew in biblical proportion!

Two comments about the story: First one, Im already doing my first draft in paper, then a friend of mine who is quite proficient with inkscape will turn them into a digital stick figures short comic.

Second comment: Maybe there could be different backgrounds and stories, all different versions of the legend of GwaH, much like the legend of Zelda. That way we could do pretty much whatever we want with the character, of course, those "versions" of the legend should have the seal of approval to be a valid fan club supported version.

All of that art (smiley, avatar, banner, the stuff from the OP) seems to be specifically of a character in OoTS rather than just OoTS-style art. Wouldn't that fall under the "Rich Burlew has specifically requested that people NOT use his OOTS art as avatar image, other than those he has specifically provided as the default message board avatars."

I'm a bit uneasy about that myself, even though I made the avatar, smiley and banner. I'm not entirely sure what the rules are with respect to reproducing art from OotS itself, even if made from scratch.

Most of the avatars and pictures I've made before have at least had some original elements, like dressing OotS characters up in funny costumes or recreating Baldur's Gate characters in OotS styles. But this one is clearly a character straight from OotS, even though a very minor one.

I don't know whether that's considered kosher or not, and I don't want to go against Rich Burlew's wishes.

2nd: actually the inn's been running for awhile. Dancing Fox Inn, we're already on thread number XV. However I swear to the 12 gods and in Lord Shojo's name, if I was just opening the inn it would be an honor to have a sign made and I would certainly use that name (and I'm not just saying that to suck-up:smallwink:)
but I'm also thinking for writing a background story (as I stated above but now I hear there's a constest) I'll post the prologue and nothing more:

The year is 1183. Azure City is on the brink of war… defeat is almost a certainty. Many warriors lost their lives, some of those warriors stories may never be told. This one’s story is told right now. I present the story of Ji (GwaH)

Ji is just the name I'm using currently, it's the closest thing I could find for the chinese translation of halberd.

Although I'll be writing in English, and probably modern English at that, I plan to pattern my piece after early chansons de geste like The Song of Roland... ten-syllable lines in assonanced, variable-length stanzas. A proper poetic form, but still fairly flexible.

I hope I can make this work. It'll be awesome if it works out. I've always wanted to write an epic poem, and this is the perfect excuse.

EDIT: By the way, I think I'm going to name him "Guy," if I'm forced to use a name at all.

This is by no means final, but here's a little preview of the sort of thing you may expect from The Song of the Halberd.

The Song of the Halberd
By Ascension

Some say he came from the West, wild and free,
Some say from the East, walking quietly,
Some say he rose full grown out of the sea,
Some say he grew from the ground like a tree,
The Halberd Guy of the Azure City.

But not one of them ever met the man,
None of them spoke to him, or shook his hand.
Nearly all who did have turned to sand,
Now I alone still bear the Azure Brand.
I who now tell you all that a man can.

Yes, I, O’Chul, am the last of those few,
The brave, the bold, the last paladins true
Who wore that armor of old Azure blue.
The others’ ghosts have finally been sooth’d.

But the story I tell is not my own,
It is of a man long ago o’erthrown,
But whose hand the seed of freedom did sow,
Bringing tyrants, kings, and emperors low.

I would enter, but I think my story would end up something like

It was a dark and dreary night inside of The Lonely Badger. Outside, rain was pouring as though all the Beholders in heaven were crying over their lost treasuries of +1 longswords. Two men sat huddled around a cold table and lukewarm ale, whispering into the night.

The first, clad in a grey cloak, leans close to the other. "Have ye heard of the exploits of the Guy with a Halberd?"

The second, clinging to his mug as though his life depended on it, a scar across the back of one hand looks up. "Nope. Sure haven't."

"Well, that's too bad. Have a good one." The inn door clacks loudly as the last, wispy trail of grey cloak finds its way outside.

The end.

wait, i just thought of something, this could end up like all legends do, different backstorys derived from a single point, that single point should be that he is one of the last survivors after the battle.

each person can have a different way they tell his story, and even if it is needed each can give him a name(different is always better) but we will always know his tale(s) as the Legend(s) of the Guy with a Halberd.

once everyone inputs there grand creations i think i may just take each of them and form some sort of book, that collectively incorporates all of the stories from each and everyone perspective that chooses to do so. no matter how big or small they may be.

I'm going to try my best to try and write up a story but I can't guarantee I can finish it due to the fact that I get writer's block. Here is how I want to start it off though.

Throughout history there have been many heroes, mothers tell their children the brave tales of these heroes as they put them to bed, and their children strive to become heroes themselves.

Some heroes were legendary, some almost unknown, the hero of our story is the latter. He was one of the guards of Azure City, and although he would have proudly gave his life for his homeland he received no recognition, for although some heroes became legendary, some were just some guy with a halberd.

Been trying to get this up for a while, stupid thunderstorm.

Personally I prefer the "post it here as a question and get the person who created them to answer" option, since that actually gives me the information that I'm looking for, namely: did the people who created all of the graphics make sure that this is ok with Rich or not. The answer is "no they didn't check with Rich"

Wait, now Im confused. Are we going to do a linar story with a begining and an end or are we going for the different legends about the same guy? Because I found the second one much more intresting and with less limitations. Lets say that the winner of the background story contest creates a background that I dont really like, or even if I win, I dont think everyone would like entirely my ideas for a background. I think that the different legends about the same guy way of telling the story gives much more freedom to antone who would like to participate on the GwaH fanfic. Instead of a full unique background there should be things in common between every story, lets call it the GwaH dogma, thinks like:

*He uses a Halberd (duh!)
*He is identified with the color blue
*He fought at the azure city war

you know? just like in Zelda games you almost always have a guy named link, a princess named zelda a master sword and a hyrule kingdom.

From those things in common you can create your fanfic, like "Now he's looking to revenge from the hobgoblins" or "He's a vigilante supporting the azure city resistance" or "He fights renegade soldiers (loke toGwaH)" or "He wanders the land looking to master his fighting style with the halberd in a samurai-esque way".

And finally, I wont be able to log to the forums a lot these days so, where do I have to submit my ideas?

Jack Zander

I think stories should be done just like Star Wars non-George Lucas stories are done. Everyone should write up their own background story, then we'll vote on the best on and that becomes the "canon." From there, anyone can write whatever tales they want to that happen during, before, or after the original tale, but they must keep in mind anything that happened at all to GwaH in other's stories. To prevent stories from being, "He died now no one can ever write about him again, hahaha," we should make an approval vote to make stories official.

I think stories should be done just like Star Wars non-George Lucas stories are done.
you're thinking non-canon, such as Old Wounds (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Old_Wounds) however even though it hasn't been announced "canon" I believe it is because two sources imply canonicity: The Story of General Grievous: Lord of War by Abel G. Peña has a sentence that reads"The Soulless One was eventually tracked down by a cyborg acquaintance of Obi-Wan's, an old enemy who anonymously reported the ship to the local Imperial authorities."; and Star Wars: Battlefront II has Darth Maul appearing as a hero character on Polis Massa and Mustafar, planets he only visits in Old Wounds. Another example of non-canon is Star Wars: Demolition (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Demolition)
however an example of Canon would be Star Wars The Clone Wars (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_Clone_Wars)

I'm the only one who's put their story up:smallfrown:
I couldn't help but notice that Graymayre didn't put a link to the thread. For those of you who don't want to search the entire 1st page up and down, or in case it falls into the 2nd page and is lost for eternity, here's the link (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87556)
EDIT: almost done with part 2 The War. I much happier with it this time:smallbiggrin: my friend gave me good advice

thanks my friend suggested part 2 was kinda rushed so I tried slowing it down, focusing on the tradgedy yet excitment of battle.

Thanks Lerky, I lost the thread and couldn't make a link .
no problem, always glad to help:smallbiggrin:
I just kinda broke down when I spent about 5 minuets searching for the thread so I decided that all I had to do now was go to the GwaH thread where the link is.

Hmm, most of that wouldn't work because it would require us to make a lot of other charecters as support. Shocker I know, but a lone protagonist is only interesting for so long. Name one multiplicative story charecter that never has an allie of some sort, especialy to foil, bounce, or extrapolate? As such we'd have to come up with other charecters for support roles, and they would have to be well defined so as not to have continuity clash with future writers. Also, s we o would r be r required y to f make each of o the r other t charecters h interesting e enough l that a people t wouldn't e mind w reading h about i them t when e they t want e a x GwtH t story. that proves my faith.

I have a new idea for a Halaberdian Cathphrase....
Which signs are you refering to? I have seen a lot of signs for variosu different things, but I need to know what you're refering to in particular.
"Eat my 10ft reach slashing damage Zombies!"
It would really help my job as an inquisitor if I knew which threat you were
Cause if you think about it, most reach weapons are piercing, which zombies get damage reduction against.
most concerned about right now. The Magenta Haleberd or the ANit-Paladin league or somebody else?

I do have one example where a single person acted on his own. The novel "I am legend" (NOTE: entirely different from the movie) has Robert Neville as the sole protagonist. In fact, throughout the entire book, he never actually obtains an ally. Of course, this is merely acceptable because the book was about unbearable solitude.

There are several other books like this, but they all use the solitude as a plot device, and not coincidence. Regardless, I think it would be best to use mostly the characters we come to know in the comic with GwaH's past (Such as Thanh and Tsukiko. Perhaps he is the one that somehow captured Tsukiko?)

P.S.
Good lord,
that was a female dog
to remove all the color coding.

I'm trying to find a good song to be tGwaH's theme song. Not his actual theme song, a lot of you guys are writing your own, but the themesong everyone makes videos on youTube with so it's not that origional, liek how Ichigo has a lot of Animal I have Become vids because of his inner Hollow, or Naruto get's a lot of Animal I have Become and Me Against the World, and One Piece get's The Pirates who Don't do anything. So, what do you guys think is a good theme for tGwtH? Post your ideas, and when we hit 10 or so, we'll have a vote! How does that sound?

I think his name should just be Gwah. No last name... just Gwah... ok maybe Gwah something but definately Gwah... Ooh maybe Guy Wah... it sounds kinda asian... enough for Saphire city...

Oh yeah and I totally want in on the story contest. I'm an English Grad with time on my hands... prepare for an epic!

And for reference I plan on keeping him relatively alone... like a favorite character of mine... people call him Jack.

very good another added to our masses.. Graymayre Whats the total count of members?... greymayre... oh right that whole sleep thing:smallannoyed:
but how about this for the motto (or some part of it)

I believe the right to personal defense exists
If I am forced to defend myself, loved ones or beliefs,
Should I be attacked or have my principles violated,
I am ready to defend myself with my weapons,
The way of the foot
And the way of the empty hand!
This way, controlled by my mind
And governed by my spirit is a skillful weapon
Which can subdue, overpower, or destroy
Depending on the forced combat situation.
I will aggressively defend myself from any attack
By using speed and precision
And never doubt my determination
To use my knowledge without hesitation or reservation
This is the way of my teacher!
This is also my way
I am a warrior!

I found something interesting on the Wizards website, it is a feat:

Spinning Halberd | CW | 114 | You have mastered the style of fighting with a halberd.

CW is the source, what book is that? 114 is the page.

Someone find and post the description!

Edit: CW is complete warrior, I'll get the description up.

Spinning Halberd [Style]:
You have mastered the style of fighting with a halberd, and can use all parts of the weapon- blade, spike, hook, or butt -to strike devastating blows.
prerequisites: Combat Reflexes, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (Halberd).
Benefit: When you make a full attack with your halberd, you gain a +1dodge bonus to your Armor Class as well as an additional attack with the weapon at a -5 penalty. This attack deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + 1/2 your Strength modifier.
