View Full Version : Music for wandering round a clockwork temple?

So I'm readying my music list for an upcoming IK campaign I'm running and a fair amount of it revolves around the dealings of the cult of Cyriss (the long and short of it, an insular and esoteric cult of technophiles that utilise current day engineering to further their own goals). One of the big dungeon crawls is through one of the cult's temples, which is essentially a giant clockwork machine. What would you recommend for music to describe how fully, erm, automated, artificially alive the environment is around them?

Also, this particular sect of creepy dudes is NE (Cyriss typically being a TN deity) so anything dark and atmospheric is a definite plus. Anything like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAq_0IWa9M0); dark, broody, with that quick percussion that sounds like it's ticking. This is a great set piece, eg. leading up to the big bad's encounter, but I'd like some background noise for the main temple as well. Industrial ahoy! :smalltongue:

Yeah, some industrial or techno music (not too many bpm though).

But the first thing that came to my mind when I read the title was "Time" by Pink Floyd.

... maybe something like Machines of Loving Grace, Ministry, The Prodigy, KMFDM ... or weird electronic experimental music like Kraftwerk.

The first thing that comes to my mind is Why so Serious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB5tbTpQvsM&feature=related), the first song from the new batman soundtrack. The wailing siren and the constant ticking would probably be great atmosphere, if your group doesn't start doing Joker impersonations...

Ooh me likee so far.

To elaborate, the inner workings of Cyriss, and the subsequent Cyriss-Tech within, are very alien to those of the outside world- even to the most deranged of inventors out there in the real world. The music should reflect the fantastical or freaky nature of the situation to the party. Like David Bowie poofing into existence, expecting a cup of tea suddenly and you realising that you're out of biscuits. :smalleek:

The first thing that came to my mind was Hope of the States-- Seconds (http://www.last.fm/music/Hope+of+the+States/_/Seconds). (this is only the intro, from Last.fm, because I couldn't find it right away on youtube.)

I'd find more for you but I'm on my mother's accursed [expletive] computer, and looking around to actually find music (from my external HDD) on it is an impossibility, but hopefully this one helps.

The only other thing I would say is that techno might be hard to find the right sort of stuff, ie not too fast, as Amiria said, and some industrial may be too heavy (for what I think you seem to be looking for, anyway. Try looking in the horror section, I can't remember the name of the band but they did the necropolis music for Heroes III; they have a lot of good stuff.

Incidentally, fast becoming one of my favourite songs. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyXeJZJUFHE)

You have to have the Countdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQt-p_nqhRU&feature=related) theme (oh the relentless ticking! :smalleek: ) in there somewhere.

It'd be fun for a timed trap disarmament, or a last minute escape, or something...

Gamelan music from Indonesia is based on metallic instruments playing cyclic patterns over and over. Sounds like it would fit with both the clockwork and temple themes well as it's often used for meditation.

Just throw Gamelan into YouTube or iTunes and see what you get.

Ligeti's Poème symphonique, for 100 metronomes, quietly, in the background, while they're trying to think.

Since I'm stuck with a PSP I can't hear the songs or link, but I reccommend ghetto train.

I have to say the Magitek Research Facility (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTmfWqeTKYY) music from ff6 sounds like an exceptional fit.

Ah, good one.
You might want to try the Temple of Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZqN2u29H_k) theme from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It's full of subdued stacatto and occasional sounds that sound like a bunch of gears clicking at once.

Hmmm, Ancient Machine and Impend are both good mechanical-themed tracks off of the Halo 2 soundtrack. Honestly.

But to get away from video soundtracks and be a little more creative, I'd strongly recommend some tracks of of Thom Yorke's solo album, Eraser. It's got the mystique and airy abstract quality of Radiohead, and of course of Thom Yorke's own voice, but set to a much more electronic background than any of Radiohead's work. Skip Divided would be an excellent track from there, as would The Clock and Cymbal Rush, though Cymbal Rush might be TOO electronic.

Maybe, for the dramatic final scene, The Engine City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhb0yYjVKww) from the Bioshock soundtrack?

Me too. From the description, I'd say you could also go for Welcome To The Machine.

This one is probably more whimsical and Elfman-ish than you want(that song from Saw sounds perfect), but it's the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.

You guys rock! There's some real good stuff here.

I don't mind if it's not all ominous and creepy; I'm planning on bringing in other facets of Cyriss than just the bad side, especially since a player has been eyeing up the Cyriss-tech and may now be swapping religions for his cleric. Plus, ever since playing Trauma Center I like the idea of a "good" sect of Cyriss being highly advanced doctors and physicians, using their secret skills for the betterment of humanity.. This may mean more mechanikal augmentation than the average Midlander could stomach, but at least the group's hearts are in the right place eh?

Some of Vernian Process's tracks might be helpful to you, they're a steampunk-themed band. Luckily, the lion's share of their music is available for free download right on their home site.

The soundtrack to the game "American McGee's Alice". The game put an odd and dark spin on Alice in Wonderland, and some levels were similar to the sort of environment you're describing.

If you happen to stumble across it somewhere, most of it will work well, but tracks 7-9 (Skool Daze, Time to Die, and I'm Not Edible) might suit your game especially well. Also, as they were designed to be background music for a game, they're meant to be quietly looped for atmosphere, something other songs with standard rising and falling action aren't quite as setup for.

Pick up the Drakengard OSTs. They'd fit the dungeon like a charm.

Edit: Chaos Legion too. All of them can be found here. (http://forums.ffshrine.org/forumdisplay.php?f=63)

The first thing that comes to mind is Mayhem - A Bloodsword And A Colder Sun (part II) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBNl_F5qucM). Moody, evil, industrial-sounding minimal tunage from a legendary satanic black metal act. Can't go wrong.

Since I'm already thinking atmospheric black metal, some Burzum is in the right vein, such as Gebrechlichkeit (part 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwOXrBgsEPM).

Industrial would be great, I'm not really on top of that end of electronica but old-school Skinny Puppy might be a good place to start.

Your quickest fix is probably a minimal techno web stream (http://www.di.fm/mp3/minimal.pls) though.

Continuing with my theme of suggesting video game music for these, I reccomend the GFS Olympus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8aW1fXRhMo&feature=related) or the Bryyo Cliffside (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dTxmdH01dE&feature=related) for general use, and maybe the Steamlord Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvptQWI29bE) for a boss type thing.

Failing that, the Halo 2/3 soundtracks have a few good ones.
