is it just me, or is this just plain broken? what about the other variants?

If you can spend minutes to change spells, you're likely out of battle, and thus could spend an hour or more.

Since you can leave spell slots open and fill them later in the day, you can, instead of transmuting your memory, simply fill the slots later, although you wouldn't be able to have spells in there before that.

So you gain:
1. The ability to convert several lower level spells into one high level one
2. The ability to change your spells mid-day, instead of having to leave the slot empty.
3. The ability to do it in minutes rather than an hour

So 1 is good, 2 and 3 is so-so.

It's alright but not broken. Maybe worth a 3 level dip in a prestige class that gives full caster progression and something else equally good.

Ah, full caster progression PrCs and base caster classes with nothing but dead levels. One of the worst elements of design ever.

Reasonable stupid yes. But my point was that it's worth not taking another PrC for 2-3 levels in certain builds.

... it amounts to one unprepared spell slot of highest level, prepared a little faster. And to get that, the transmuter gives up the bonus transmutation slots. Not really useful, honestly.

it seems pretty good, but you also give up 1 spell per level which hurts especially at lower levels.

Oh, thank you for clearing that up, I didn't parse it right the first time. But mostly I was just reminded of the mechanic and had to wince.
