Hey Avatar Artists,

I really have to thank you guys and give you props for your creative effort. I studied so many of your avatar creations this weekend while I was practicing making them and I have to say they were really inspirational. Hopefully I will get enough practice where I can make some really nifty ones to post here soon and then I can start taking requests.

:)

I like it. It has a funky coolness to it - I like that it has some really big white eyes and no mouth. The one suggestion I would make is to lighten the colors for the sword a bit; right now it's hard to see any detail on it. Very nice, especially for a first try.

Those who've been on the #giantitp IRC channel over the last couple of days might have seen this already, but...

http://dominomf.com/smcfiles/Z-Axis_Death%20korps.png

This is a Warhammer 40000 Imperial Guardsman from the Death Korps of Krieg, based on this Forge World model:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Imperial%20Guard/Krieg/dk48.jpg

Also, since I was warned this might offend people on the irc channel, it being Rememberance day in some places, a disclaimer:
This is not a soldier from any of the world wars. In making this image, I intend no disrespect to the brave soldiers soldiers who fought fought for their country in either war. I do not mean any offence to anyone in this picture.

Now, I'm considering making this my new avatar to replace the old Space Marine (who may be seen in my sig), but since I don't want to offend anyone (see above disclaimer), I may not. Thoughts? Criticisms on the artwork?

'Twould be "Ootsatar" (a compound of OotS and Avatar). Very nice, excellent for a first attempt. In Adobe Illustrator, the standard line size for Ootsatars is 2 (pixels), though you can go thinner for detail work and thicker if you think you need to.

You might want to make the head a bit bigger and set the eyes closer together (though the latter is more a matter of taste); I'd also probably square off the angles in the legs. With AI, an easy way to do this is to select the Object menu, then Path, then Simplify. In the Simplify dialogue box, check the toggle boxes for Preview and Straight Lines and play around a bit with the Angle Threshold slider until it looks right; you can tweak it a bit further if you choose the Anchor Point cursor (the white one) and select the object.

I like the weapon very much; what is it? Looks sort of like a double sickle.

Roy got turned into a goblin! :smalltongue:
Bit too large; 117x117 pixels is the standard. I personally set my canvas size to that and then zoom in to work, but you can also adjust the size when saving the image. You should also be able to save it as a .gif with transparency to get rid of the white space.

The eyes should have a greater difference in size, and the torso is a bit long. With hands, I find it's easier to make them look right if you put them together as follows: have the arm line extend out to be the middle finger, and then make a single arc for the two outside fingers. That's for basic OotS style hands, of course - for different hand/finger arrangements (pointing, peace sign, ok sign, etc.) you probably still want to use the arm line to form one of the fingers, but the other two might end up being separate lines.

Other than that, very nice! Good job with the goblin-fangs and ears, and also with having him looking to the side (getting everything lined up for profile avatar can be trickier than you expect).

Another one.

Thanks for all the compliments!

@Lykan: It would look okay on the Organization XIII guy or on the new Sneak avatar, but it looks really funky on the Rex (brightly colored guy) avatar. Besides, the Org. XIII wouldn't be any different with the black outline because it's so dark already. The Sneak avatar would look okay, but it all seems to flow together more this way.

You see, I like this one... Maybe it's an issue of line thickness... Or what you mentioned with the line color and all... It's a bit of both, I think.

It is awesome, though... Just one question: His/Your right arm, is it supposed to look like it's behind the body?

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i119/Dispozition/sbforstinkoman.gif

Well, that's a matter of opinion... Personally, I think your SB's face is far superior - for one, your SB's 'mystic diamond' isn't an undifined blob and is actualy a diamond. Also, the mechanics of you SB holding the axe are really realistic. Not to mention how cool it is that he's holding an axe.

But the best bit is ITS STRONG BAD!!! How cool is Homestar. But I'm getting of topic and so as to not get warned by the mods, will go back on topic... How cool is OotS!!!

I've checked out the arts and crafts stuff, and this was a cool idea I thought up one night at a table, so I thought it best to display here. I was the cleric and I cast Shield Other on the Fighter before a big fight. He ended up taking 320+ damage at lvl 6 from the one boss encounter. I know this, because I took about half which was 160+ damage. Anyway, we made it through with someone healing the fighter and me healing myself. Well, here's the comic I put together. Its simple, but I'm lazy. Comments? Cookies?

Sneak: Awesome set of dolls... but the width of the image is causing horizontal scroll. It'd be great if you chopped it into a row of 5 and a row of 4, and maybe even put it under a spoiler tag.

EDIT: That is, the version in your sig should be modified a bit to address the scrolling. I think some scrolling is acceptable in an art thread.

Axis: Yeah, I think the adjustment did a lot of good. I like the emo freak warlock.

Danielf: Really simple, so theres not much the comment on, but the eyes are a little big. Other than that, it's good.

becky: I like the second one better... I dunno why. They're both pretty good.

B-man: I like it, I dont know the character at all so I dont know if it's accurate, but I still like it. Unless his pants are supposed to be that baggy, I suggest making them a tad smaller.

First attempt at an OOTS-style avatar, using Corel DRAW with a bit of tidying up in Photoshop (CDR 9's gif export isn't great and I don't have AI...). The ava represents myself, playing one of my LARP characters.

I've stuck very closely to Rich's style while I'm just learning the ropes, hence the general lack of detailing and so on. Looking for any feedback on anything I might be doing 'wrong' at this point? Thanks.

I'd say that it's the other boot that should be the biggest.
Take a look at the strip, the biggest boot is the one wich is 'closer to the reader'/ So As the character is facing the right side of the screen it is his right boot that should be the big one.

SiD

Hmm... While the second one is more correct, the first one has a look of stepping forward that I like... But I guess 'stepping forward' is a different pose and then the feet would need to be pointing in the same direction.

Get the GIMP or something, put a bit of anti-aliasing on, and you win. Very nice indeed.

Regarding the Warforged - not all the lines have to be thick, you can have a mixture. Smaller details can easily be thinner. Nice image btw!

Thanks Z-axis,
I think I found the balance for the WF. As I was on a role I finished up the rest of my Eberron party.

Ravin - human Rogue (my character)
Hammer - fighter/barbarian
Kurgoth - half-orc monk
Dimble - gnomish artificer
*Cord - changling, some sort of wizard
*Norrak - Dwarf, battle-mage of some sort

http://geraldwhittaker.googlepages.com/Eberrongroup.png

Yes, I Should be doing schoolwork. This is a very fun way to procrastinate.

* I am stuck with core books... these two players are not & they always have strange character classes. I never remember what their classes are called.

Keep up the good work Walter

The wings that were on the avatar last page, are techniccaly Ego's...I just copied them off a picture, redrawing them completly, the they're roughtly exactly the same...And I technically copied the dragon wings off Sneak...I only really have two sets of wings that I use that are actually mine...

Let me try to convert it to a gif in AI and see if it has the dots.

Nope, no white dots, so, thanks Sneak! But he does look a little different from the original besides the white dots. The anti-aliasing (whatever that is) probally was a bit messed up.
But I was really just wondering why it gets those dots? Or if anyone else who uses Inkscape with gimp gets the same thing.

I was using Adobe Illustrator CS. I went for 3pt for main outlines and 2pt for minor inner lines but it could probably do well to bump those up a notch for thicker heavier lines.

Nice work, just the torso looks a little messy, you might want to work on that. They're meant to be thin and skeletal, right?

Also, since this is vector graphics, just scale it down to the appropriate size.

Actually, if you look at a necron pic like this one: http://uk.games-workshop.com/necrons/designers-notes/images/necron-warrior.jpg, it shows that their bodys are quite bulky for a skeleton. You know, they are armored. As for the torso being a little messy, its all jaged to show the ribs. I guess I could make little wholes to show each individual rib for the people who cant tell.

And the size. Well if I wanted to fit his whole tall body in there, I think I wouldent get the best picture, and cutting it off at the knees isnt that big of a deal. But can you people tell they are his knees? I know that because I was the artist I tend to look at it differently.

Edit: and heres an avatar I made for a PbP game thats comming up soon:
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/Myatar/Facius.gif
He is weilding 2 unholy kama's made of pure bone. And I just noticed how big his eyes are..... although whenever I make an avatar the eyes are always too big.... maybe its just my style.

Now that I know they look like knees, but when I first saw the pict I thought they where strange looking feet...probably its more obvious to people who are familiar w. necrons then to me.

you can actually customize your avatar so it goes up to 120X120 px so you could have six more pixals of leg, or you could put a line at the bottom so it's obvious that its cut off.

anyway looking good.

How do you cange it to fit a 120 by 120 when you are fitting it on the avatar? If you know what I mean.

go to user CP
>> edit options
>> miscellaneous options
>> avatar
pick "choose custom"

>> Custom Avatar URL
enter your avatar URL

>> Custom Avatar width (min=20, max=120)
enter "120"

>>Custom Avatar height(min=20, max=120)
enter "120"

Thats it. 117X117 is the default if you don't enter another size.

Well a while ago I started doing some OOTS inspired Characters pictuers for my players. This is the first one I'm posting for comments. He's a Gnome Illusionist/Rouge with a Smokepowder pistol.

Let me know what you think. The PNG looks good in Firefox and IE7 for me, but if anyone has an issue seeing it let me know and I'll post a Gif or something.

Hmm, its pretty good, lets see:

1. Proportion: I think the head (but not the eyes) could be a little bigger.
2. The firey wings look like they are coming out of the lower back, they could be a touch higher.
3. Contrast: The flaming sword could be a little brighter, its being lost in the clothing.

Overall pretty good though.

Yue: Very good, just a question, what is this pink stuff in his neck?
Darel: The best OotS bunny i have ever seen, awesome

Yue has a scar on his neck, when he was much smaller the group was campaigning against an evil black dragon. During a fight, one of the dragon's minions captured baby Yue and held a dagger to his throat to force the group to stop attacking. They did, but the minion slit his throat anways and made his escape. Yue would have died, but the group was all there and instead of chasing the bad guy, they helped Yue.

So now Yue has a scar across his neck. He can't talk above a hoarse whisper because of the damage and the scar tissue -- its very hard growing up to be an intimidating red dragon when all you can do is whisper at your enemies, lol.

Ulma is my favorite. Her father is a Dread Pirate and she wants to find him and join his crew and perhaps become a Dread Pirate herself.

Still learning the ropes and would appreciate feedback on this one:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/glyph/oots/oots_eddie_annie.gif

Two characters from a LRP game I play, done for a friend. I'm sticking with the very simple style of Rich's characters rather than the more elaborate style that tends to get used by avatar makers.

Cheers!
