Okay... Can I get an opinion on which of these two looks better?:

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i311/ChimeraHybrid/My%20avis/Antony.gif

With Phobos in the background?

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i311/ChimeraHybrid/My%20avis/AntonysansPhobos.gif

Or without?

I think the first one looks best. Maybe it's just seeing the second one without makes it seem empty?

*Cough*my wings*cough*

You said you'd change them a bit...I'm seeing the exact same wings, but a different colour...I don't mean to dampen your spirit, but if you could at least redraw them yourself?

@Lykan: The one without the shadow is better.

@Soulkinfe: Great serenity in the background. And is the tee-shirt a blue sun one? I can't really tell with the gun in the way...

I gave them too him with the idea that he'd change them...He said he would...seems he's just coloured them differently...I don't totally mind, but I'd at least like some acknowledgement...Those things took forever to make.

Well, I just started reading Dragon magazine, and the art in the issues is amazing! So I decided to try and do a oots style version of Lord Soth on the cover of the newest issue, #351:
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l67/Myatar/LordSoth.gif

I was thinking of entering him in the undead contest, but hes not technically undead, he's a death knight, but hes not undead. Plus, compared to all of you master oots drawer's entries(bad grammer), he wouldent stand a chance.

I know it was William Shaksepeare...I think it was A Midsummer's Night Dream. The play has in it, a group of actors who are working on a play, themselves. In it, a man plays a wall from which two characters speak to each other. There's a lot fo fussy memeories in there...but I think that was the gist.

The 'standard' board avatar size is 117 pixels square but 120 works too. You used MS Paint, I assume. If you plan on doing more I'd suggest InkScape, IMHO.

Heh, my bad. I guess it was the light kind of red you used that made me think it was crystal. It kind of makes it look... transparent-y, if you know what I mean. And once I thougt it was crystal, my thoughts immediatly went to the crystal stuff psion-type characters use. Thus I thought of the staff.

Um Lykan, you use Inkscape right? Well do you know how to change what size your lines come out permanently when using the pen-like tool (the one that allows you to make curved and straight lines). You know, so you dont have to change the size every time you make a line? Mine is set on 5 and I always have to change it to 2.

While i'm Not Lykan  I know how to do this. Draw A line with the tool, and change the thickness and whatever to what you want it to be as standard, and select the line. Then press Ctrl+Shift+P and click on the "Tools" Tab, Then the "Pen" tab and select the "This tools own style" option and click on "Take From Selection" and it should keep the settings of the line.

Besides, I make the lines different thicknesses on purpose.

alright. First and foremost, I really don't myself as an avatarist, but I would really like to give it another shot. Here's the first three shots in the dark I made:

Lebowski of..The Big Lebowski

with that said, I coudl really use some pointers from some of you more adept artists out there. A while back (last weekish?) Darkcorax requested an avatar adn thought to myself: 'Gee, self. You got nothin' to do 'til January, why not give 'er a go again, eh?' Of course, myself nodded and we set to it, once more. This time:

I made a few modifications on old themes. I'm still playing with the mystical magical fiery crap, so I'm relly not likin' it too much. That nad boots are kind of annoying. Any other suggestions?

But anyways, for the main part of this message:

Techpriest Critique:
-Good shadowing. However, the shadow on the hood bugs me. There is too much curve in the shadow where it transitions from shadow/light.
-The symbol is on his little brown collar-thingy is well made, but since he seems to be turned slightly, it might be best if you didn't make the symbol look like it is facing the viewer. Or you should make him look less turned away.
-I would make the two different blue tubes distinctly different. As it is they kinda blend.
-The boots are too... straight. Face them more towards the viewer.
-The object sticking out on the left side of the picture (under the priest's right arm) looks VERY 2D. Not so good with the overall effect you have been creating.

Now note that I only get this nitpicky on things that I really like.
You did an awesome job. *much praise*

Bryn
2006-12-23, 03:46 PM
Thanks muchly for the critiques...

You're right about the 2D-looking servo-arm thing, but since one of the arms goes along the rough path of the light it is hard to shade it. The other one was easier to light. Do you think adding lines to make them more box-like would help?

You're very much right about the boots, I re-used some old ones - they're not even shaded.

I'll try skewing the symbol a bit, you're right that it should be turned away. I'm planning to redraw it anyway, there are some problems with line thickness that need addressing. Unfortunately, I have already used it in a comic, but comics can be updated.

Good point about the blue tubes. I'll sort that out.

Well, I wanted to draw it so that the arrow was drawn and he was ready to fire the arrow. I had a wee bit of difficulty trying to draw the bow intially. I think that after this, I'll stick to hand-held weapons. Not bows and arrows. I'll try and fix up the bow later today. (I still have to get out of bed to celebrate the holidays with my family, seeing as I'm the only one up at the moment)

I don't mean that they're not pulled back, I mean that since their stretched the strings would likely form two straight lines to the end of the arrow and back to the bow.

New artist, not so much a new board member (I lurk...a lot...I like my pixie status)...my original av was in the same style, but really shoddy looking, so instead of refinding it, i made a new one

Well, it is not supposed to be lava and fire, it's supposed to be an ash column/cloud (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Products/Pglossary/PlinianEruption.html), or a soon-to-fall-and-flow pyroclastic flow (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Products/Pglossary/PyroFlow.html). You are thinking of fire fountaining (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Products/Pglossary/LavaFountain.html), different sort of volcano. Kimana likes the Mt. St. Helens (http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/MSH/Images/may18_images.html) and Vesuvius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Vesuvius)sort better (stratovolcano (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Products/Pglossary/stratovolcano.html)), as that is what her home mountain (Sangertiq) in the RPG I play her in is. The other kind she can mess with, but shield volcanoes (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Products/Pglossary/ShieldVolcano.html) like Kilauea in Hawaii (http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/gallery/kilauea/volcanomovies/) aren't really her style. :smalltongue:

This is the last ava-request I did, I'm particularly proud of it cause it's fun and the border worked out well. Normally I go to pains not to cut off a figure in an avatar, but I obviously could not fit a whole tree...

Now if you're really in awe...i guess thats okay. But i prefer using different words that more precisely describe my feelings.

And about the wings...i think their lovely enough that i would like to steal them. But I'll refrain :smallwink: The sword is also quite lovely. No offense, but the pants kinda stick out like a sore thumb <___< It doesn't fit with the armor and the wings. Now if it was a normal guy, the pants would be okay.

I like it. Maybe we should form a Coalition of Avatarists Who Shade...

It reminds me of the warlock, 4th character along in my sig. Just better, and more vampiric.
Only criticism would probably be the flame furthest to the left, which gets thinner and then thicker - although this could happen IRL it doesn't really look right.

well, it has no shading, which is good.
But your proportations are a little bit off. The head's too small, the body too long. The eyes are too close together. I advise you to look good at the Giant's art and try to imitate a few of his characters. I think that's the best way to learn using stick proportions.

Well, actually i'm trying to give it a bit of personal touch by not copying the style completely

It shows that we're more advanced than the non-shaders! Full alpha transparency that works in modern browsers (something that everyone should have now) ftw!

I believe your use of alpha transparency show only laziness! It is harmful to 56kers!

Besides, Roy hates shading.

I copy-pasted a fighter-monk in another file and made a goblin and resized them so they were.. big..

The fighter/monk was originally a try to make a monk-cloth, but halfway through i decided to try to make weapons.

Any comments?

(And to avoid discussions: i am not trying to copy Rich's style, just please point out flaws that are completely visible to be non-intented)

Even if you werent trying to copy rich's style, the rectangles seem rough and choppy. The ends of the arms and legs could use some rounded ends. The way the arms bend is unnatural. Oh, the feet are too long (at least for the goblin.)

Also the body seems a bit to thin and long... but that might just be your style. Oh and the ears on the Goblin aren't on the head properly, especially the left one.

Yeah i basicly am not really concentrating about the rectangles as the "wrongness" is hard to see at basic avatar size. I'll see to that in the future :P

Still looking for a fix to that problem (about the arms and legs)

Are the arms bend in unnatural ways?

About the feet, they screwed totally for the goblin :P

No they aren't. Sure they're longer than most people's avatars, but that's just style. My feet are longer than normal, but I like the look better, so it stays. When it comes down to it, the way you draw is up to you, it doesn't have to please everybody.

The arms and legs are a little unnatural, try reversing the curve (convex instead of concave) and make it a sharper curve if the arm isn't supposed to be at rest. That gives the appearance of elbows and not a curved arm.

I wonder what drawing program you use. Most would have an option for rounded ended lines.

The arms should not be bended in towards the body (as jack said).

And holes in things aren't that hard...Just make a whole shape, then draw the whole in it and fill with white. If there's something that needs to be seen through the whole, just draw it in over the white. Easy

Or if you are using Inkscape you can just draw the hole, select the object and use the 'difference' tool, and there will actually be a hole that you can manipulate.

About the goblin ears (too lazy to quote :P), they got off when resizing it from 200 X 200 size.. that MIGHT be the reason that the body-shapes are a bit off too.

I use Adobe Illustrator, and there probably is a feature for rounding, but AI is a bit hard to find things in.

hmm, well using this (http://www.legion-fourteen.com/reduced%20image.jpg) as a reference pic, the shield's too small and the armour and clothing could be a little more detailed.

Also, the body's a little long, head's too small (although that could mostly be the body being too long), and the skirt could be longer; oh, and the javelin should proabably be placed behind the hand.

Which one is the best?

The first one with the wings down is the best. I think having each and every feather drawn individually is too much. A more general outline with 2-3 extra layers of feathers. Too many lines for a stick avatar. Stick avatars dont have that much detail. Sometimes you need to draw a line for where to stop (pun intended).
