BEHOLD!

Not bad for a first try. Head's about 1/2 the size it should be and too high, eyes should be more oval, the arms should be one bent line and not two at a right angle, and legs are alittle straight.

What program are you using?

That's actually alot better than my first try, I'd post it to show you but it was involved in a unfortunate mishap with the recycle bin :smalltongue:

Hey guys, its me again! I just wanted to post a few more avatars I've been experimenting with. These are all characters from my roleplaying game...

Theya Half-Lillend the Diviner

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/8520/theyauo8.gif

For those of you that don't get the Lillend refrence, Lillends are celestial beings that look like elves with snake like tails but they also have beautiful feathery wings and feathery hair. Theya being half blooded got shorted on the deal. She focuses on divination magic. Ignore the bunny.

Ulma, Yue, and Darel ...again

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1340/ulmarocklp7.gif
Another pic of these three ... but this time Darel is a dragon!

Phael Demonsbane

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/9962/phaelrt8.gif
Phael is a wulfen, which are basically humanoid wolf-like creatures except wulfen only have two fingers+thumb and two toes on each foot. They're tall and generally very slender to almost looking emaciated. Phael is a ranger that prefers to hunt down evil outsiders ...until he was dominated and pressed into the service of a certain evil black dragoness...

Kirlath, Aurora, and Umbra

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/327/kirlathtwinsyy0.gif
No, they're not kobolds! They're a draconian like race called Dz'isu. They're actually quite tall (generally averaging between 6 and 8 ft).
Kirlath (far left) secretly serves the good silver dragon Kayloni, but he's unhappy now because he's been caught red-handed by the evil twins Aurora and Umbra.

Woooooooooo!

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/3924/nakeetimech1.gif
'cuz I can.

OK, I made some minor adjustments to my figure, and I would like some approval before I put it in my sig. I'm not too sure about how well the segmented armor works, so all comments are welcome.

Looks better
some gold trim on the bottom edges of the skirt and at the base of the, umm, brush-thing couldn't hurt. The head still looks a tad small, and could proabably be lowered infront of the armor some. I think for my template, I copied some avatars off of here a basic outline of them. The segmented armor looks fine.

I hope you plan on shrinking it down or spoilering it to put it into the sig though, file size is a tad large.

o.O My feelings can pretty much be summed up in this smily:

My ways? First of all, I always have a reference image. If its on the computer, I insert it into Inkscape next to where I'm working, otherwise I have it on a table in front of me (in this case, the Eisenhorn book cover).

Since I already have made a good few robed characters, I grab one of those and delete all the bits I don't want. In this case, pretty much all of it except the head - the starting image in question being my avatar.

Most shapes are originally drawn with straight lines, clicking with the Pencil or Pen tool (it doesn't make much difference, although with the Pencil tool you have to click on the end of each line to draw another from there). I then go into node-editing mode, and delete those that are unnecessary (which don't usually exist if I draw with straight lines). The trick is to use as few nodes as necessary, and make them smooth where appropriate. I then mess around with the handles until they're in the right places for the shape in question, then move onto the next shape.

I use the Imperial Symbols (http://www.searchfreefonts.com/fonts/i5.htm) font for Imperial symbols. This is a very useful font, as it has a large number of Imperium-related symbols, each keyed to letters of the alphabet. The Aquila is lowercase a, for example.

I colour as I draw, and to make things the same colour I copy the hexadecimal values. If I need to have the same skin colour as the Giant uses, I use the ColourZilla extension for Firefox to get the hexadecimal values of it.

Sometimes, such as in the case of my Techpriest, it is necessary for parts of the figure to curve behind the character from in front. Since I can't actually have an object be on two different layers, I instead simulate it by using boxes and lines of the same colour and line thickness as the covering shape.

Once the figure is drawn, I then add shading using the same techniques as described above. This is given a transparent black material, and put on the various layers as appropriate.

Here is an exploded diagram of all the shapes used in Eisenhorn.
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/9485/eisenhornexplodednd4.png

Any questions? :smallwink:

The first one with the wings down is the best. I think having each and every feather drawn individually is too much. A more general outline with 2-3 extra layers of feathers. Too many lines for a stick avatar. Stick avatars dont have that much detail. Sometimes you need to draw a line for where to stop (pun intended).

Yeah...I suppose you're right about the wings...I just find that outlined ones are harder to draw, not that these ones didn't take a long time, but they were fairly easy...I dunno...Maybe the next version...

I'm not an expert on shading, if you want real advice, go ask sneak, or one of the better artists, like Z-Axis.

The right sleeve is to heavily shaded...The whole thing doesn't need to be in shadow, just some of it. The shoe's don't have shading, put some on. Left sleeve also needs shading, only on the right side of it though. Pauldrons need shading, do does hair, not essential though. Little flappy thing over his legs needs some as well...Aside form that..It's a good start. Better than my frist try.

MAKE MORE MAKE MORE!! I must know the rest.... sweeeeeet. LOVING IT!!! Have you tried saving it as a .png or .jpeg? might stop pixalation...

PNG yes, JPEG no! No no no! Sorry, a bit of a pet peeve here -- but you don't use JPEG for graphics that have large blocks of solid colour. It's for images with large numbers of colours in smooth gradients, without sharp edges... that is, photos.

JPEG on cartoony-style line-and-block-colour art gives you horrible smudgey-looking artifacts.

GIF on a picture with too many colours has to reduce the colours somehow, like by dithering, resulting in the spotty look you see above.

PNG is the way to go, because it handles line-and-block-colour images like GIF, but can use more colours. (Its only downside is that the most common web browser has some issues with displaying PNGs.)

Attempt at a Sahuagin Mutant:

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/3568/sahuaginbgkd7.png

Mmm. Not too sure about using a background, and the teeth & claws. Though they're a fairly important part of Sahuagin.

Also, the face seems a little too human. Though as far as searching tells me, nobody else has made a Sahuagin, so I've got nothing to go by.

Help?

potatocubed
2007-01-19, 02:11 PM
Re: Sahuagin...

I'm not sure about the claws myself, but I think details like that are mostly a matter of personal taste. I think the background works, but you might want to make the seaweed a different colour from the sahuagin - maybe more brown?

To make it more sahuaginy, try widening the mouth and shaping it into a ^ (inverted V) shape, like a shark mouth. Add finnage on the cheeks to obscure the basic shape and 'humanness' of it. You might be able to reshape the head some, but I'd have to actually play about with it before I could offer concrete advice on that. Maybe the others here will have better ideas.

It's an interesting exercise. I may make a sahuagin of my own later and see how it turns out.

Ok, so I've been using these as figures for gaming purposes because they're cheap, and I'd thought perhaps I should share them with everyone.
http://people.clemson.edu/~grandal/FileBin/DnDFiguresSheetPreview.png
These images are free to be used around the giantitp.com forums, and for personal gaming. To make figures to use for gaming, cut them out in a strip, leaving a tab below/above the feet. Then fold into a tent shape and glue the tabs to a penny like this:
http://people.clemson.edu/~grandal/FileBin/example.png
Print sized picture is here. (http://people.clemson.edu/~grandal/FileBin/DnDFiguresSheet.png)
These should be on the standard D&D scale of 1":5'. I don't recomend printing directly from a browser, but if you must, it should be scaled down, 50% works for me. Also, be sure to check the print preview before printing, so you don't waste ink.

I'll gladly adress any concerns or questions, and comments/critques are always welcome.

I too have done some work in this vein in the past, when there was a previous discussion about making a collaborative collection of minis. Unfortunately I can't find any of my work on my computer; all I can find is what I'd uploaded for others to see, which is... one horse.
http://members.westnet.com.au/perey/images/mini.horse.thumb.png (http://members.westnet.com.au/perey/images/mini.horse.png)
(Click for large version.)

I remember I got sidetracked from actually doing more by the problem of scaling these miniatures. A 2"x1" figure on a 1" square base doesn't look so bad. But a horse is meant to take up a 10' square in game, or 2" scaled, and folding a paper mini like that looks awfully... triangular. That's why my horse mini only has a 2"x1" base.

This OotSatar may or may not be related to a character idea I've had relating to a grappler that is so determined to become *the* best grappler that even death is unable to stop him. The floaty sword is there because telekinetically wielding weapons is pretty much the only cool thing he can do that doesn't involve trying to figure out how to draw someone getting telekinetically grappled into submission/death.

Much. I like it.

His left arm seems a little weird...and it doesn't really seem like the other hand is gripping the gun, but that's not your fault. Just the limitations of the stick style.

Anyway, the gun and the armor are really nice.

This is first humanoid avatar I've done from the begining. It's an old larp-character I played when I was 17 years old. It's an advisor of bishop or order (there were two big relions chaos and order). Cirle in forehead is Orders symbol and red and white are the colors. Robe reached almost ankles and was round without any sleeves. Well you can see:

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u189/Srednak/Sadnerlarge.png

I've used paint first and finished it off with the GIMP. Here is what it looked like after paint:
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u189/Srednak/jops.jpg

EDIT: I made shaded version of that.. don't know if like it more unshaded. Desisions.. desiosions
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u189/Srednak/Sadnershaded.png

Shading: You make the shapes of the shadows and colour them transparent black. I posted further info a while back.

Ego Slayer
2007-01-30, 04:41 PM
For shading use a black filled, line-less object, with the opacity adjusted to your liking, over the area you want shaded.

If there's any other way, do tell. That's just what I use.

BAH, SIMU-NINJA.

Yeah, the tranparency is your friend when shading. I normally use about .4 or .5 transparency...And I know it's not exactly the sneak line technique, but you can also make outlines a lighter shade, works well with armour in my experience.

Yup, that saturn boy knows what he's on about...

When using black clothes or armor, i tend to use a dark grey as a outline. Or as dis boy said it, having a lighter outline.

AmberVael
2007-01-30, 07:18 PM
Actually, I don't use the opacity option for when I do shading. I usually just copy the color of the object and adjust the darkness scale. Also the gray scale so it'll be more shadowy.
Also, I use an interesting method to make shadows for some of the harder shapes. I create a duplicate of the object I want to shade, then create an object to overlay the part that I don't want to be shadow, and use the "difference" tool in Inkscape to cut that part off. I then scale down the object and make minor adjustments (and take off the stroke).

Sneak
2007-01-30, 10:23 PM
Let the master speak. :P

For the lines, I usually take the same color as the inside and then make it 30 darker on the K slider (black). Unless the inside is completely (100) black, in which case I make the outline gray. If the inside is already dark gray (60-80 on the K slider), I just set the outline to 90.

For shading, I actually don't use black opacity, I just draw in the darker bits. Stupid? Maybe.

Nice, but the body is far too tall. It should be about as tall as the head. Your lines should really be a bit thicker, and your legs slightly shorter. The gun looks a little skewed, and you pointed out the white bit yourself: Try making it an actual hole if you can (which in Inkscape at least can be accomplished with paths).

I think I'm going to write a shading tutorial for Inkscape soon.

I don't know why, but I've been playing some of the PSP MGS...and I just got inspired to do this. Well, really it's inspired by Bond, but MGS inspired me to be inspired by Bond. Whatever. Kind of a parody, I guess. I was just bored, so you'll probably never see any more Bond-ish stuff ever again from me.

Large image, hence the spoilers--

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/1458/bondzt9.gif

Complete with all the steretypes! See if you can identify:

Bond Girl
Evil Old Scientist Person
Thug/Minion
Bond
Obligatory Big Ass Weapon (this is a hard one)

And then there's the random other agent-y person. And yes, you can tell that I had some fun with the names (well, all of 'em except for the last one and Mr. Killjoy).

I feel so bad. I can churn out all kinds of avatars when I'm in the right mood and when I have inspiration, but I can never seem to get around to doing my requests. I feel awful about it, too, but I still can't bring myself to open up Illustrator and make 'em. [/rant]

I cant really see the rapier against the dark clothing. Make the sword thicker, or the shirt lighter, or both. I cant see the other hand either. You might want to increase line thickness.

Hi everyone. I've been reading the comic for years, but it's my first time on the forums. As I enter the pixie age... I start showing my first three OotS Style Art. I work with Inkscape and I think I could use some hints to increase my own style.

The first, my current avatar:

The other two are two chars on a freeform rpg, and the style is something new I was trying. Don't mind the horrid huge ghost-like eyes.

This is not completely done, but I would like comments anyways. Please no comments on length of legs/body, this is my style..

Make the legs less skinny? This is stick figure art. You can't make the legs less skinny. You could give him boots though. Boots are always good.

Also I was going to comment on the length of the body, but you pre-empted me.

I'm not sure where this is supposed to go, but since it's kinda related to OotS style art (and I think urodivoi posted some of his here):
