I have split OotS Arts and Crafts into two seperate threads. This thread is for posting any OotS style artwork you have created, be that an avatar or an entire scene or perhaps some wonderful fanart.

Please do not place requests for avatars here, for that, use this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=arts;action=display;num=1154099556).

Some friends of mine ran a PBEM at another site I frequent, and these are their characters. There's a Sa'id (Necromancer), Rennik (Halfling Ranger/Barb), Cadfael (Cleric of Pelor), Mission (Monk of the Path of Blood and Stone) pictured here with his son Promise, Diviner Farron, and Garyth (Fighter).

Tick, pretty cool!! Guess I will try my hand at a scene based pic soon. Wish I was playing DnD (Basic ~ from the old days before and mention of 'Advanced') just can't seem to find anyone my age that wants to lol.
Anyway, nice job...

PS... Anyone still play 'basic' or 'original' DnD anymore?

Freeeeeddoooom!

William Wallace rocks.

Looks very good for a MS Pain avatar IMHO. I am so glad I went the InkScape/Gimp route though now. I knock them out fairly simply now that I can vector draw and have a stock pile of easily editable base avatars. Just my to coppers.

Good job though ;)

And remember If you ever feel bored, don't heistate to do another version of Death for my hoard ;)

Although in all sensibilty those are brillent, and I can't wait to see the others that will surely follow. Your avatars are a pleasure to follow. (I lurk in the arts and crafts thread)

I've recently started an art streak and have since tried my hand at making an OotS avatar, and would like some feedback.

http://usera.imagecave.com/Griffin/Avatars/StunnedFighter.png

Most of the tutorials here suggested vector based graphic programs which I had no experiance with, and instead made it with Photoshop. This is a significant improvement from my first two attempts. I'm goign to donate this to the 'adopt an avatar' Section.

Thanks for the kind comments, folks. You know what's funny? I've gotten so used to making these stick avatars for people, the other day I was making a sketch on paper for someone (realistic style sketch, not OOTS style), and I forgot to draw ears on all the human figures. I didn't even catch it until the whole thing was done.

Eldred, that looks good, but you probably have to thicken the lines a little bit to get a better effect.

Thank you. I do think the skull came out ok, but I think I came up short on the 'Hip bone' axe, the rib case chest protector and the bloodied mouth.
Unfortunately, once I post I usually am thinking of the next pic ~ so seldom fix ones I think aren't great. I would be glad to make a custom avie out of it for you if you wish. Just let me know what you decide on.

I've made a Cuisinart Thri-Kreen multiweapon fighter, but I'm not sure I like how the gythkas are positioned. The problem is, without any decent reference shots, I have no clue how the hell one would realistically wield a pair of double weapons, so I'm leery of going for a 'cool' pose, as I would likely end up tying the poor thing's arms in a knot.

Here are three wizards I worked on:

http://www.geocities.com/sjunderw/Hypnosis.gifhttp://www.geocities.com/sjunderw/Abjuress.gifhttp://www.geocities.com/sjunderw/Crazedman.gif

Note: The last two are halves of a whole. Basically the wizardress is blocking the crazed sorcerer's bolt. However, some of the bolt got chopped off by the 117*117 avatar size.

Adaon,

I like the bottom one, I see the point that the hair looks like it is on fire though. Guess I would push it down further, so some hair shows on top and make it slightly wider. Just my 2 cents. Great avatar by the way.

Firstly, ouble posting is generally frowned upon on these forums. Just use the modify botton to edit your post.

And to your problem. You ahve to have a URL for the picture. Then, to insert it into a post, put the url into image tags ().

Example:

But without the spaces in the tags.

Does that answer your question Lord of video games?

Well, yes and no. As far as I can tell, the speech is in the right order, but almost all of it is too small to read.

AmberVael
2006-08-30, 09:14 AM
Really? I found it quite easy to read, though I dislike the strange fonts. My advice would be to pick one normal or almost normal font and stick with it.
Otherwise, I find your comics amusing. Not hilarious, but amusing, which is better than most other comics I see. It takes alot of effort and alot of tries to make something really funny to me. Even Oots only makes me laugh occasionally.

Lord of video games - Use either imageshack.us or photobucket to upload images. THEN you add the img tags. If you want it to be an avatar then don't add the tags and put it in the 'I have my own pic' thingy in your profile.

Revised version of the first comic I posted. (http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/7572/comicnewof2.gif)

I'm trying to make it a little easier to tell who's talking first. I'm not sure if it worked or not. I also made the whole comic smaller, so some of the text is a bit hard to read. And as for the strange fonts, I can see where you're coming from, but I kind of like them. They sort of show the character's voice.

Dragon_Rider
2006-09-13, 07:04 PM
I think the issue, Chris, is that the upside down V that you use to create the seperation in the legs is to lopsided and so the little bump in the back to represents her rear end just ends like looking like she has one extremely large thigh and maybe a tumor...

But that's just me being overly critical, I think overall its a good job.

Oh, good. You noticed the straight-jacket.

...

He held a spoon in his mouth?

Do you have any suggestions on how I might improve, other than thickening the lines?

EDIT
Question for those that use Inkscape and The Gimp: I'm trying to fix it up (thicker lines, larger, transparent background) but I can't make the background transparent. If you could impart the knowledge I would be greatful. Here's my attempt:
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m278/Sophistemon/Inmate-1.gif

As you can see, the lines got all pixelated, though the background is transparent. Help me, please.

EDIT
Hmm. I might make the lines even thicker. Most of them are at 2.0 now. I may raise them by a .5...

NEO|Phyte
2006-09-13, 08:34 PM
The blockiness is because GIF doesnt support partial transparency, you need to cheat via adding a second layer, filling it with white, then magicwand selecting the transparent bits of the main layer (with ~15% tolerence) and removing that selection from the white layer.

As for line thickness, 2.0 is what I use, it seems to be a good thickness

Sophistemon
2006-09-13, 08:38 PM
I did make the second layer. Wonder why it failed... maybe I accidentally erased the layer... I'll try again in a bit.

EDIT
Nope, did it wrong again. Any chance you could post a guide? I am making a second layer, coloring it white with the paint-can, moving it back, using the wand to select it, pressing Ctrl+K, then saving as a .gif. What am I doing wrong?

ElfLad

NEO|Phyte
2006-09-13, 08:49 PM
Ok then, you've set up your white layer and such. With the AVATAR's layer active, select the bits you want transparent with the wand tool. You should get something like this:
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/9533/4kh8.jpg

You then switch to the WHITE layer, keeping your selected area. CTRL+K should remove the selected portions of the layer, leaving you with this:
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5240/5cw8.jpg

Then save as a .gif

http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/5300/forcecommander2vm5.gif

Dang. Going to try again. I wanna get this right so that I can move on.

If I may? I use the bottom left most button on the main GIMP gui to make the white layer. If you click there, there is no need to fill it in with white - you can check a box in a gui that comes up for plain white. It will then show 2 layers in the white block, on the main GIMP gui just above where you clicked on the layer tool, and you can drag the image up to bring it to the top. Then just do as explained earlier.

As for line thickness - I go 2.0 for all body parts (usually head, arms and legs) 1.5 for clothing (makes 2.0 look thicker than it is) and .5 to 1.0 for detail work.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Looks like you got it while I was typing :-/

Okay, I'm really new to this whole OoTS style art thing (or, heck, art in general), so I want some feedback on the pieces I've done so far.

Loren:

Laurin:

Darai (the grey elf from Loren's backstory):
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/tobey158/Daraibackground.png

Attaeim (the deceased wyrmling black dragon from Laurin's backstory):
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/tobey158/Attaiembackground.png

Vaetheldion (my personal favorite of the ones I've done so far; he's the deceased silver dragon from Laurin's backstory):
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/tobey158/Vaetheldionbackground.png

In case you're wondering why they all have backgrounds, it's not because I'm an overachiever. It's because I can't get GIMP to work for me, so I can't transparent-ize them. ;D So, like I said, I'd like some feedback. What am I doing right, what am I doing wrong?

Increase the hair/clothing lines to 1.5, mouth/finger go as the rest of the body (2.0).
