This thread is replacing the old Arts and Crafts thread and is for showcasing any and all of your artwork that isn't styled after Order of the Stick.

Woohoo! Yay art.

Ok, well it's not finished but I didn't have time lastnight to do so. Meh.

Wow.

Amazing.

I so wish I could draw like that...*cries*

There's only one problem with it. Well, not so much a problem as a...thing. There's just something about the head that bothers me. I'm not sure what. However, it might just be because it's incomplete. I don't know.

I'm also not a fan of the letters, but that's very minor, and more of a subjective thing.

Praise? From Sneak? I think this is a first! :D
No sarcasm right?
Anyway, yeah there are a couple things I don't like about it but I've lost the mood to finish it. I probably won't finish it or fix it for at least a few weeks. I don't really specifically know what else to do with it.

It's done in markers and pencil crayon.

I apologize in advance for posting this again. I posted it elsewhere in another topic before I realized it really belongs here. These are some sketches I did of characters from the last D&D game I was involved in. It was a villains-only game, where we were playing characters who would eventually becom the arch-enemies of the heroes we were playing in a separate game in the same campaign world.

The leader, a cleric/necromancer following the God of Tyranny: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/Malvornox.jpg
The muscle, a zealous soldier of the Church of Tyranny's standing army: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/Serjon.jpg
The bodyguard, an elven sniper: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/Avelios.jpg
The advisor, a summoner/alienist tertiarially involved with the Church of Tyranny: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/Charidin.jpg

I like the art. very well done except there's something off about the way the archer's string hand is holding the string. Can't describe it very well, but try to put your hand in that position and then imagine trying to keep a bowstring taut with an arrow knocked like that. Speaking as a former archer, it just looks off to me.

Edit: figured it out. The drawing arm is always on a plane with the string and the bow. He should be pulling the string back. He is pulling it up.

I knew instinctually that the left arm didn't look quite right, but I'm not really sure how to fix it. I've examined it closely to try and figure out how I would change it, but I've just drawn a blank.

Anyway, here's some slightly older pieces I've done:

One of my personal favorites of all time, a bounding orc: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/2ae6605a.jpg

A drawing I did for a friend of a shamanistic warrior woman: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/LyneCorydrea.jpg

A paladin of horus: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/HorusPaladin.jpg

And a drawin of my happy-go-lucky cleric of the God of Freedom, long before he gained enough levels and experienced enough betrayal to become an embittered champion of liberation: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v234/Emptiverse/Lytharik.jpg

I'm sure this should go with out saying, but I'm paranoid - please ask my permission before using any of my pictures.

I've examined it closely to try and figure out how I would change it, but I've just drawn a blank. Not sure I can explain it better, but I'll try. As one draws the arrow back, The line created from the arrow tip to the back of the elbow should be as straight as possible. No matter where you move the bow, that line remains constant. So in your drawing, His hand should be up at his side, just under the breast, while the elbow is pulled back and up. That said, I still think its some incredible art work. I hope to see more of your stuff here.

Nice character design with the weapons being particularly good. I find the figures to be a little stiff but otherwise good.

I've been experimenting with a new coloring style for my webcomic, and decided to put up a few character drawings for comment.

Lionel Glenrose, White Mage (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/AngryBalrog/Lionel-1.gif)

Antonio Denzel Wren, Swashbuckler Extraordinaire (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/AngryBalrog/Antonio.gif)

Carnahan Rastel, Elven Ninja (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/AngryBalrog/Carnahan.gif)

Vania Altamont, Avian Archer (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/AngryBalrog/Vania.gif)

Hemlock, Elven Black Mage (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/AngryBalrog/Hemlock.gif)

Algernon McKinnon, Dwarven Engineer, and his robotic "familiar", MR-CO (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/AngryBalrog/Algernon.gif)

Cykla, Dryad Summoner (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g144/AngryBalrog/Cykla.gif)

I personally like how Carnahan, Hemlock, and Algernon turned out the most, and think that Vania turned out the worst.

And what Oskar said, that Elflad guy is awesome like a zombie John Lennon.

Also, I did the same coloring job for some of the villains in my comic. Unfortunately, I couldn't do a lot, because most of my upcoming villains aren't going to be introduced as villains, but here they are.

A couple suggestions for Alarra:

His right pectoral muscle is a little misplaced. Your torso's midline is ramrod straight and vertical when it should be a little more bowed.

His left collar bone is shifted too far to the left, and his arms lack muscular definition... which would be ok if his chest was as less defined, but his chest is muscular, and thus his arms should be as well. Consistancy is good.

Finally, the shadowing is also not consistant. From the clock, the light source appears to be coming from the bottom left, but from his chest, it appears to be coming from straight on.

Other than these, there are a couple minor things like the pants that bother me, but its mostly good.

The Escapist -- Oh, man, really like your character designs. That's the sort of thing I'm into, also. And yeah, that orc is awesome; everything looks right-on.

Flavor -- Wow, that's SERIOUSLY really nice! The details make me happy... :3

Caillach -- LOVE the colours! The shoulders feel a bit thick -- that face with the colourful hair and texture, though, is yummy. I like vibrant colours that aren't expected. ;3

And now, my stuff! Since I've been drawing a lot longer than I've been playing D&D. ^^; I'm actually linking to a little collection of D&D related sketches on my website from a campaign I'm in right now. I *always* doodle during roleplaying... If you want to look through the whole thing, it starts here:
D&D Doodles (http://www.shazzbaa.foskie.com/shazztemplate.php?image=/sketch/DND_SC.jpg)

It's not a coherent comic, since it's just a few isolated events, but there are a lot of little comics in there. My favourite one, if you don't want to go digging through all of the sketches and whatnot, is this two-pager, Based on a True Story:

Page 1 (http://shazzbaa.foskie.com/shazztemplate.php?image=/sketch/DND_SC_map1.jpg)
Page 2 (http://www.shazzbaa.foskie.com/shazztemplate.php?image=/sketch/DND_SC_map2.jpg)

Feedback of any intensity always appreciated, since I don't know if these are amusing to people who aren't actually in the game -- a comic's always funnier when you're in it. ^^;

This is the first set of tutorials I used to get myself started.

http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/tutorial.html

This is the second set of tutorials I used when I became more interested in how to draw proper bodies.

http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/index.htm

Finally, two years ago, I picked up Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Anatomy" in the library because I really didn't want to look at too many pictures of naked men.

Everything else I have developed on my own as a result of practice and enthusiasm. Of course, I still suck, but I've come a pretty long way.

Finally, two years ago, I picked up Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Anatomy" in the library because I really didn't want to look at too many pictures of naked men.

"The Figure" by Walt Reed is awesome if you're squeamish about the nude dudes. I don't think there's any fully naked man in that book, but with plenty of actual human figures to look at... though there are a fair number of naked women (but them, you just can't escape if you wanted to).

Casual's right... it's just about wanting to do it, and then getting down and actually DOING it.. If you keep practicing and working on improving yourself, you WILL get better, and noticably so. Some people are born with a gift for drawing, and some people aren't, but the people who aren't can still work and match -- in many cases, surpass -- those who were born with the talent; I've seen several examples of people who have. It IS a lot of work to get better, but if it's work you enjoy, then it's worth it.

/cry You people make me depressed from the fact that I'm such a horrible artist... I think my problem is (other then my lack of skill and talent) I'm a bit of perfectionist when it comes to art. I always feel like I need nice clean lines and like the perfect symetrical stuff. I can't draw things naturaly, with realistic looking hair and faces and stuff.

Plus I LOVE how most of you do your armour, I'm a huge fan of awsome chunky ornate armour.

I like it. The only thing I want to point out is this: The line on the head seems to be about the right thickness. The other lines (mainly outlines, not inner detail lines) seem thin.

I do like the amount of detail you were able to fit into it.

you know, I keep seeing the programs, inkscape and Gimp together. When I downloaded Inkscape, I tried to also download gimp but I couldent. What is gimp? Is it a program that lets you saves things on different extenstions so that they can be uploaded on photobucket? Because I have yet to figure out how to do that.

Heh, I haven't used Inkscape in awhile now (because I stopped trying to draw avatars).

The reason you would want Gimp or some other tool is to do graphic format changes and/or final editing of the picture. Resizing. Transparency. Stuff like that.

Other good free tools are Paint.NET (Windows) or IrfanView (Windows and Linux).

Gimp is very powerful, but I don't know how to use that power. I haven't really explored IrfanView yet. I like Paint.NET. It works very well for the kinds of manipulation that I need to do.

Whenever I try and save something from inkscape and try to upload it on photobucket, it says I need a different extension, like gif and stuff, but im horrible with computors, thus I cannot get my avatars on this site.

Can someone please tell me how to change the extentsion (watever that is), so that I can upload avatars on photobucket then on this site? Ive asked on a few other threads but havent gotten any responses, so if someone could please, PLEASE HELP ME, it would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you are using Windows XP, then get Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/). Export your Inkscape picture as a PNG. Load it into Paint.NET and re-size it to where you want it. If you can figure out Inkscape you can figure out Paint.NET (heck, you could probably figure out Gimp for that matter...). Save your final picture as a GIF. Then you can upload it to photobucket. Note: you will have to install .NET 2.0 for Paint.NET.

Another option for changing size and formats is IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/). I haven't figured that one out yet. It works with both Linux and Windows.

Your final option is Gimp. Note: For Gimp you may have to download GTK+ for Windows. I think that there is an installer package that will install GTK+ and Gimp at the same time.

Remember: Using Inkscape, export as PNG. Load into photo-editing software (one of the above programs) and make sure it is the right size. Save it as a GIF which will give you the best portability and filesize.

Edit: I'm not sure what all file formats that photobucket takes, but I know that it accepts PNG, JPG, and GIF. There are probably a couple others that it takes as well. I think your problem is that it doesn't take SVG which I believe is the native format for Inkscape. Same with PDN for Paint.NET or whatever Gimp's native format is.

OK, I think thats all I needed. I just wasnt sure how to get it to save with a different extentsion. I knew it had something to do with exporting but I wasnt sure what.

Well thanks, ill just download Paint.net and go from there. :)

OK, I downloaded Paint.net and all that stuff, then someone said to export as a PNG, but how do you do that? I meen, that isnt one of the extenstions available, plus I really have no idea what exporting is(well I might have some idea). But still, I remain confused. :'(

So I don't double post: Arg, I have to come up with a cool design for mithril breastplate for my Fighter/Barbarian/Tempest duel wildy axe killy dude, Deurgar by the way, and ya, my friend is fianly goign to draw him for me (she hates dwarves with a passion and thinks Deugars are even worse) and she wants me to decide what the basic look or my armour is, but I suck at thinking up stuff like that >< please help.

Casualgamer
2006-10-14, 09:08 PM
Make it a three-piece breastplate. 1 large piece covering the neck and pectorals, a smaller piece for the diaphram, and a large plate for the abdomen.

Include shoulder plates, mail skirt, shin plates, and bracers, but keep things close to the body, as this is a mithril breastplate. Things should look agile.

Try curving swirling designs, but don't go overboard. There's a reason real armor doesn't have filigree on it: it gives a place for the blade to catch.

No helmet. Helmets for anything short of fullplate is lame.

Just my suggestions.

Phear my underdeveloped drawing skills! (Of course, I stand in total awe of daleicious's piece...this is why I'm a writer)

I was fantastically bored during my studying and essay work yesterday, so I started doodling in my notebook. It started with two portraits of music gods, but then I decided to copy two of my favourite pictures from the "You pt. 2" thread.

When did Bob become a yaoi star?

And now, some portraits of two of our most illustrious posters:

Who wants to give me abuse for this? (http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n259/Lord_of_Cookies/Ego.jpg)

I probably deserve it for one reason or another. Note to self: do this in pencil from now on so that when you screw up her nose, you can fix it without using white-out. I think this is the best one, for more reasons than one.

The hat proves that I have no sense of proportion (http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n259/Lord_of_Cookies/ElJ.jpg)

if you wouldn't mind...how do you color in photoshop? do you clean up your lineart?

Two ways:

One: Draw your image, preferrably in strong black. Scan in. Trace it with the pentool on Photoshop. Fill in with the pen tool or magic wand.

Pros: Get a very contemporay cartoon effect.
Cons: Takes practice and very timconsuming.

Two: Draw your image. Pencil looks cool. Scan in. Work with the curves and contrast fo your drawing to make it clearer. Set the layer to Multiply. Create a new layer... place it behining your drawing, fill it in a dull colour, i like dark grey. Create a new layer in between your background and drawing. Using this to colour in. Use a soft brush and simply use light strokes and around 60% opacity.

Pros: Awsome effect, not too time consuming.
Cons: Can look abit messy, take a while to get to know exactly what ya doing.

Hope that helped. For more info on painting in Photoshop, get a magazine called ImagineFX, tis real useful.

@Sketch: Whoa. Just whoa. That's really, really cool.http://s4.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

What version of PS are you using? An Elements or a professional?

In regards to the second coloring option: When you're putting a layers under the drawing you manually erased the white from the drawing for transparency beforehand? How are you getting the layers under the drawing? I assume you open a blank document because the image it's self is locked. Where is Multiply? I still don't have a firm grasp on PS.

Wait, now that I think of it Duplicate is probably the same thing (we may not have the same versions).

The extent of my PS coloring was putting somewhat opaque color right over the cleaned up drawing.
Here is one. http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6331/girlcolorwebze9.jpg

I'm basically trying to get good at the darn program for when I go to Art AP in my senior year for highschool (2 more years woop!) AWSOME!!!!!!! That is very nice, idea, ideas. Um. Work on getting more levels of Shade, it looks a bit too chunky... and the outline, i dunno, i dont like it, but some people do. Overall, NICE!!!. And at Ego Slayer nice drawing. I am using Photoshop 7.0. Multiply is a seeting you can put the layer on, like overlay etc. by putting the drawing like this, you can draw on layers underneath it, and they will show through.

Nice, I Definatly love it. My friend has a Tablet, and him and his girlfriend draw **** all the time, they seem really good at drawing random doodles that look awsome, I'm way to much of a perfectionist in art to do that. Aurumvorax,

Awesome Celia, I love it.

The main issue I see with the hands is that they're too small. They're drawn well, but appear out of proportion with the rest of the body.

The hair and face are beautifully done, but the head seems a bit large, proportionally. To counter that, I think that I would lengthen the legs a bit, possibly make the feet a bit longer, but they're really fine. I'd also widen out the stomach a bit...I mean, I realize she's skinny, but it almost looks like that goes in to a point where actually having ribs wouldn't allow.

Very nice though.

Ittybittykitty,

Dirk is great.

Wilhelmina however....looks kinda like a guy's head on a girl's body. Okay...it actually looks -a lot- like a guys head stuck on a girl's body. I'd make the head a bit smaller, restyle the eyebrows a bit, and add eyelashes maybe? That might help.

And to keep in the spirit of showing artwork...here's something I did a little while ago that I actually never showed over here.

hyikim? yes, I've seen this one, it's cool beyond measure. A masterwork, really.

Alarra your advice is really appreciated. I'll try to re-draw her soon. The problem with the proportions might come from the fact that I'm used to drawing fan-art for ElfQuest by Wendi Pini, and those elves have a bit different proportions, they are much shorter than humans and have relatively bigger head .
I liked your drawing too. Is it a Tremere girl doing some research?

No, I'm serious.

3ds Max and Maya are both 3d modeling and animating. Combustion is video compositing, greenscreening, particle effects, and all that awesome stuff. Combustion is one of the most commonly used compositing/special fx programs in the movie industry. Flint, Flame, Smoke, and Inferno are basically the same thing as combustion except they reach out into other areas with increased particle systems libraries(combustions specialty), and more realistic effects. Each of those 4 covers a slightly different field. They are obviously only used by the top notch movie producers.

I was told about them by an autodesk sales rep, when I was in Dallas. I'm sure you can find examples of where each was used. If I remember correctly the ghosts in LOTR were created(or rather edited) using inferno.

Anyway, Autodesk is an enourmous company. They've also got Autocad, Revit, Viz(weakened version of 3dsmax), inventor(weakened version of autocad), motionbuilder, scetchbook pro, and more. Basically they bought Alias, about 1.5 yrs ago, and that really expanded their industry even more, especially with the releases last summer.

Cool picture, Mr. Limb Rippa.
I dig the fiery magical hands (the hands are excellently drawn, btw). The cape is well shaded, but the other clothing isn't as strong. The robe-thing he's wearing probably needs a line between his boots to show that it hangs down behind him. Clothing is a pain, but for me the best thing is to practice from references to try to get the hang of it.

This is fan art for T. Hunt's magnificent Goblins comic. The characters are (obviously) his and not mine.

Nice work, Alarra!

Now, always remember to keep unlined paper with you, even in class. It will work havoc with your real work, but your drawing skills will profit.

The arm down? I see nothing too wrong with the arm - the elbow is maybe slightly high, but not so much as it would bother anyone. The only criticism I can really offer is that the nose is a bit high.

Wow lots of cool artwork- I can't comment on all the recent stuff, but bearofbadnews I like your last two a lot, lots of action & movement in your fighting scene & the bear pic combined with the much appreciated pun of your name is cool.

I have been working a lot & so have not posted much n the last two months but the month before that I wasn't posting because I was working on a series of caricatures for the members of my youth group.

here is a couple, I'll post more later.

They may look a little Efworldy but I started them before Erfworld began - my OoTS art has been a bigger influence:

Urodivoi, I'm glad you appreciate the pun, not everyone appreciates puns... sigh. I'd say those caricatures hit the target pretty well. They have a good resemblance, exaggerate pronounced characteristics to good effect, and share a consistent style.
Dr. Bath, I agree with others that the drawing is very successful but for that mouth, which is a bit off. The cape is very good in my opinion. Her right arm is a little strange too, slightly too short.

Here is fan-art for another book, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere.

That should probably go in the OOTS-style Arts and Crafts thread: this one is for any other sort of art. That is, of course, unless you are doing a stickman style of art that is not OOTS-style.

Anyway, good work, but here are some pointers.

I would advise against using powerpoint. The lack of anti-aliasing completely ruins otherwise good pictures, and in any case the tools are very limiting. Anti-aliasing is the addition of extra, less strongly coloured pixels along a diagonal or curved line, which surve to make the line seem a lot smoother to the eye. While Powerpoint does use vectors (which are arguably best for this sort of art), I would advise downloading Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) instead, as that is a much more powerful program which is both similar and different to Powerpoint.

There are ways of getting anti-aliasing in a program that otherwise does not support it, such as paint, or indeed powerpoint. Resizing in Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) is a popular method.

That aside, make your lines thicker! Thin lines are a common mistake, increasing line thickness will make your art look many times better. 2 pixels generally looks good on avatar sized art, probably more on that image.

If you are aiming for OOTS style, the head needs to be circular and closer to the body so it overlaps: you should not be able to see the top corners. Likewise, he could do with hands: just a couple of curved lines.

The sword could do with being moved closer: he's not using it to attack, and therefore it would just be harder to carry where it is. Try tilting it back over his shoulder. This will also help reduce image size.

Apart from that, well done!
