I'll need to know what program you are using before I can help.

I'm not sure on the files types Paint is willing to save to but if GIMP can open the file you can make it transparent through that.

Here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=arts;action=display;num=1156891679;s tart=90) is the guide for using GIMP for transparency,

I use Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/), erase the white part, and save as GIF.

If you're not worried about IE not showing transparency, just set the background colour to transparent when you export as .png.

Otherwise, set it to white (for the anti-aliasing) and save it as a .gif, making the white transparent. This is easy in irfanview, although this can cause artifacts due to dithering, or in the Gimp.

Finally, I would seriously reccomend not using microsoft paint, due to the lack of tools (especially vector-related), lack of anti-aliasing, and the use of only .bmp (which gives horrendous file sizes) to save.

Maybe I should be more specific:

Whenever I try to remove the white background using irfanview it just turns the background black and leaves white bits all around the edges of the avatar. I'll try and make an example real fast so you can see what I'm talking about.

Here we go

Any tips on what to do about that?

For Windows users, and for 90% of tasks, I think that Paint.NET is easier to use than Gimp.

I use Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/), erase the white part, and save as GIF.

Don't use JPG, it doesn't support transparency. Save it as a GIF.

D'oh....solved the mystery

Aparently where I was hosting them turns everything into a jpeg when you upload it.

Lame facebook garbage....just another reason to drop my account there. Thanks for the suggestions though.
