Living Symphony

Not all music is heard. Some pieces of music are lost to the world, for various reasons. Perhaps their composer died before they were written, or their composition was lost before they had a chance to be played. Some works of music come to people in dreams, only to vanish as soon as the dream ends. However, some music that goes unheard can take on a life of its own. When a truly great piece of music is lost to the world, it can take on life and sentience, becoming a Living Symphony.

Living Symphony Subtype
A Living Symphony possesses the following traits unless otherwise noted in the creature’s entry.

All Living Symphonies have the incorporeal subtype.
Blindsight 60 ft.
Immunity to sonic
+4 racial bonus on saves against mind-affecting abilities.
Living Song: All Living Symphonies have an aura of music, the effects of the aura changing depending on the type of symphony and the symphony’s mood. The living song ability is always a mind-affecting ability.
Each individual Living Symphony has a mood, chosen from one of the following: Joy, Fear, Passion, Serenity, Sorrow, or Wrath. A Living Symphony’s mood determines the effects of its living song, and possibly some of its other abilities.

Etudes are fragments of forgotten music given life. They may be born from just a few measures of truly great music that have been lost or never written. Etudes appear as small balls of glowing, golden light. On close examination, they are actually made up of hundreds of miniscule, luminous notes, swarming together in a sphere. Etudes spread their music by inspiring musicians and artists. Once a bard or musician has been inspired by an Etude, everything the play is imbued with the soul of the Etude’s lost music.

Living Song (Su)
A Etude’s song can constantly be heard around it. An Etude’s living song grants benefits to all allies within 60 ft. of it. The Etude itself also gains the benefits of its Living Song. The benefits depend on the Etude’s mood:

Joy: +1 morale bonus on all saving throws.
Passion: +1 morale bonus on melee attack rolls
Serenity: +2 morale bonus on Concentration checks and Intelligence-based skill checks.
Sorrow: +2 morale bonus on Intimidate checks, +1 to the DC of any spell with the fear descriptor.
Wrath: +1 morale bonus on melee damage rolls

Muse (Su)
An Etude can inspire brilliance in artists and composers. An Etude may grant a willing character a permanent +2 morale bonus on either Craft checks or Perform checks as a full-round action. The bonus lasts forever, although the Etude may choose to take it away as a swift action.

Etudes and Bards
A Bard can gain an Etude as a familiar. A Bard who has taken the Obtain Familiar (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Obtain_Familiar,) or who can gain a familiar in another way may choose an Etude as his familiar.

Sonatas are whimsical Living Symphonies, rogues and tricksters. Their music is spread as people whisper rumors of them, each whisper a note of the Sonata’s song. Sonatas have humanoid forms, and seem to be made of soft, silver light. Close examination reveals they are actually made up of thousands of gleaming silver notes.

Living Music (Su)
A Sonata’s whimsical living music distracts or impairs their foes, overburdening them with emotion to give the Sonata the upper hand, whether in a fight or a simple trick. Whenever a creature comes within 60 ft., they must make a DC 20 Will save or be affected by the Sonata’s living music for as long as they remain within 60 ft. of it and can hear the music. Once a creature successfully saves against this ability, it is immune to it for 24 hours. The effects depend on the Sonata’s mood:

Joy: Charmed as the charm person spell.
Passion: -2 penalty on all saving throws.
Serenity: -5 penalty on Sense Motive checks made to oppose feint attempts.
Sorrow: -2 penalty on attack rolls and damage rolls
Wrath: -2 penalty to AC.

Sneak Attack (Ex)
When a Sonata attacks a foe denied its Dexterity bonus to AC or a flanked foe, it deals an additional 3d6 points of damage.

Songblade (Su)
As a swift action, a Sonata can focus its music into the form of a blade, allowing it to fight with corporeal opponents. All damage dealt by the songblade is sonic damage, although damage reduction still applies to it. If a Sonata drops, throws, or is disarmed of his songblade, it dissipates to nothingness. The blade is treated as a +1 ghost touch rapier. In addition, the songblade has one additional property, depending on the Sonata’s mood.

Joy: Keen
Passion: Thundering
Serenity: Defending
Sorrow: Merciful
Wrath: Vicious

Evasion (Ex)
If a Sonata makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, it instead takes no damage.

Uncanny Dodge
A Sonata retains its Dexterity bonus to AC even when flatfooted or struck by an invisible attacker.
