I'm in a jewelry class right now, and we get a piece of silver to turn into a ring! I'd like to make a Niven Ring. My best friend and I talked about that being the best wedding ring ever, and although I'm not marrying him (although I would if he asked, I'd do anything for him) I'd still like to make a Niven ring.

So, the ring isn't going to be scale in thinness, etc. But I'd like the surfaces, inner and outer, to match a Niven ring. I couldn't find any good photos online though.

I am willing to make it pretty detailed.
I am going to patina it so that the design really pops out.

How would one suggest that I design the ring? Links to good pics would be awesome.

The thing about Ringworld was all the detail was on the inner surface
There are some pics here (http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/show_creator_details.php?creator_id=70)

So basically, like, earth-from-space-style designs on the inside, and the outside is plain?!

More or less, not the purfect design for a ring I wouldn't have thought.

The outside of the ringworld is completely black and non-reflective, if I recall correctly.

The outside of the ring does mirror most of the shape of the land (mountains show up as valleys and valleys and mountains, and so on). There's also a hex grid involved (it's part of the power and defense system), but I don't recall if that's actually visible or if it's entirely below the surface.

The hex grid was actually encased in the ringworld material. So not visible, and I believe it got destroyed anyway thanks to the puppeteers.
The inside got all the detail, but the outside does what adanedhel9 said.
The oceans didn't go quite as deep as they should have, and appeared on the opposite side as big flat areas.
So not totally bland.

You know, for an actual peice of jewlery, it might be cooler to do a reverse niven ring, with the view from space type stuff on the outside instead.

You could always do it inside-out.

edit: I call HAX on AKA.

Inside current has continentish blobs. Depressions=land, ocean-wave stampings=water.
Outside has the letters SSJE in somewhat-binary (a=1, b=10, c=11). But I might do a more blobbish design on it.

I guess it's the thought that counts?

It seems to me that having the inside irregular could make it uncomfortable to wear over long periods.
