Just came back from seeing Tropic Thunder. All I can say is that it is probably the best comedy I have seen in years. It is to Vietnam and WWII movies what Monthy Python is to Medieval Movies. For example whenever we see swordfights we cannot help but say, "IT is only a flesh wound," or when we see horses thinking of coconuts.

However, at the same time, it does not demean soldiers in anyway what so ever. In fact it even praises them by degrading actors who try to do serious war movies by showing that no matter how serious they try to be, they will never compare to what actually war is.

But going to movies that are parodied, I counted
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
Rambo
We Were Soldiers
Apocalypse NOw
Full Metal Jacket
I recommend seeing it.

I thought it was excellent...i liked all the viral stuff they did leading up to it...and the fact that they further sent up apocalypse now, with their own hearts of darkness with their own doc, rain of madness (free itunes download)...definitely worth the 8.50

I liked it, too. And honestly, I thought Robert Downey Jr. did some of the best acting I've ever seen in that movie. I didn't remember until almost the end that he is, in fact, neither a black guy NOR Australian!

Hmm...it didn't look too great from the previews and commercials I've seen, but everyone I know who's seen it has only had positive feedback. I think I'll probably try to see it sometime, if I can.

Jack Black is just so so wrong... :smalleek: I enjoyed it. Great acting from Downey and entertaining although I wouldn't praise it overly.

I saw it and very much enjoyed myself. Though I expected Downey to deliver my favorite line, I think it came after the scene on the bridge:

Stiller: I was wrong! Blow the ******* bridge! I was wrong!

Or something along those lines. But Downey was just amazing in general. It was much better written than I expected, too. I'd give it a 8.5/10.

I think my favorite was definitely from Robert Downey Jr. - "I'm a lead farmer, mother *******!" Every time I play Call of Duty I'm tempted to shout it out.

That, and Nick Nolte's ""I don't know what it's called. I just know the sound it makes when it takes a man's life." I think that's probably the epitome of an epic war-movie line, though it happened to be in a "parody" war movie.

Total awesomeness. This certainly ranks as one of my favorite comedy movies of all time.

If Iron Man didn't prove to you much, Robert Downey Jr. is certainly back and better than ever.

I loved this movie. I don't say this very often, but Tom Cruise was amazing.

Indeed. I didn't even know that was Tom Cruise until the end.

Saw it opening weekend.
Loved it.

I thought Kevin'd be dying fairly quick since he wasn't in the ads at all.
Pleasantly surprised to be wrong.

That movie was freaking hilarious. One of my favorite movies. The "lead farmer" line made me think of Samuel L. Jackson.

I still love the ten-year old drug lord with a rocket launcher.

Hilarious movie if you like movies that are just stupid-funny in some places. The lead farmer line was insane, as was the "prop head" scene. and pretty much every scene with Tom Cruise dancing to rap.

I haven't seen it, but I'm certainly going to, after seeing the viral and the trailer.

The viral. Warning. NSFW. Contains Ironman doing bad things to the Panda.

I had no effing clue that was Tom Cruise. That role was hilarious as-is- knowing it was the Crazy Cruiser in a fatsuit and a bald cap makes it gold. That scene where he and his lawyer-flunky are dancing to Apple Bottom Jeans and trying to get the agent to agree to let Stiller's character die? That's grade-A class insanity right there.

Hmm...my favorite part of the movie might have been in the fake movie previews before the film. The Ben Stiller one was funny, and the Jack Black one was basically them saying "Eddie Murphy. STOP BEING AN IDIOT," but the Robert Downey Jr./Tobey McGuire thing was hilarious. The whole thing just nailed that "controversial oscar bait" movie dead on, and when it got to that line "Forgive me father, I've been a very bad boy." I nearly died.

The part I really enjoyed (other than RDJ's entire performance) was the phone call between Ben Stiller and Matthew McC after the panda death.
"I've killed the thing I love the most..." "Oh god...you killed a hooker."

"No, a panda!"
"Amanda? That probably wasn't even her real name..."

I thought the movie was really good, I thought the "Simple Jack" scenes were a little over the top, but a mentally challenged friend of mine was actually sitting right next to me laughing his ass off at them, so I guess I won't be offended if he's not.

I thought the movie got a little long, but other than that it was great. I think the McConaghey-Cruise interactions were probably the best, altho RDJ also made me laugh all the freaking time.

I was expecting it to be crap, but it was amazing.

"I'M A LEAD FARMER, MOTHER****ER!"

Like a lot of people, I went in expecting it to be crap and thought it was hilarious. Though I will say, I found the Simple Jack stuff to be fairly over-the-top and more than a little distasteful.

That said, RDJ was hilarious, and this was one of the few movies I've seen where I actually thought Ben Stiller was funny. Same goes for Jack Black. And I had no idea that was Tom Cruise until the end.

And yeah, the "lead farmer" line was definitely the best in the movie. Though I must say, all the exchanges between Robert Downey Jr. and Brandon T. Jackson (Alpa Chino) were pure gold ("What do you mean, 'you people'?" "What do you mean, 'you people'?!").

Also, the fake trailers were hilarious. Especially the "booty sweat" one, because at first my friends and I thought it was real.

Cruise was hilarious.

"I WILL RAIN FIRE DOWN ON YOUR ASSES! WE'RE TALKING SCORCHED EARTH!"
...
"Who were those guys, anyways?"

My favorite scene, personally, is
Ben Stiller kneeling and spraying the M16 rounds into the jungle while gesturing with his other hand and screaming, and the scene right before that when the Vietnamese say "These men have no fear of death!"

T'was a great movie indeed. Loved the previews as well, particularly Satan's Alley (Porno Groove backed up by Latin Chanting adds to the effect), along with the "I've been a bad boy" line was just classic...

Cruise's role as Les Grossman was also great. Loved how he cusses out the Flaming Dragons and his dancing to Rap (especially the credits). Interaction between Kirk and Alpa was also fantastic.

Also I noted that the kid playing Peck's son also played Stiller's nephew in the Viral skit they did (He summed up how Iron Man's good until The Dark Knight to Rob Downey Jr. in a Mask)

I liked it, though having not seen very many war movies, I probably missed all but the most blatant jokes in that regard.

In that vein, I disliked the way they used (what seemed to me) ridiculously excessive blood and gore effects. It just got stupid, not funny. But maybe that's me.

Didn't particularly like the Simple Jake (John?) or whatever. Seemed stupid/silly.

Les Grosman (A friend told me he was Tom Cruise. I really don't know actors or movies.) swearing out the Dragon cartel was just priceless!

'Lead farmer' was good. So horribly cheesy it was good.

It seriously annoyed me (even for pure comedy) that they were always shooting in the air, and none of the drug-ers (what's the proper term?) ever seemed to be hurt at all. Seriously. Maybe they're making fun of one of those war movies I've never seen, but... Gah. W/e.

And to sum it up...

I! WILL **** YOU UP!

The drug makers weren't hurt because the actors guns didn't fire live ammo.

That's what makes it even funnier.

Mr._Blinky
2008-09-08, 08:29 PM
Yeah, they didn't, you know, give the actors real ammo. They were stage blanks, but the heroine farmers didn't know that.

Oh. I suppose that's true.

I guess that, being a gamer, I'm kind of sympathetic when I see people who don't get any results. (i.e., none of the farmers getting even incapacitated.)
