(This is a fairly high procedure thread; please read the entire instructions carefully before posting. Thanks.)

Ever have a simple, straight-forward rules question that you can’t figure out the answer to? Ask it here. No question is too simple. No more worrying about whether your question is “worth” starting a thread. Ask here and receive an answer. You are, of course, welcome to start a thread for your question, and if you think your question is subject to many interpretations or will start a debate, you are encouraged to start a new thread for it.

This thread will serve as a catch-all for simple, discreet questions that can be answered quickly according to the RAW (Rules As Written).

If your question is about real world weapons and armor ask it here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=gaming;action=display;num=1149238581 ;start=0#0).
If your question is about homebrew rulings start a thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=homebrew).
If you are looking for the meaning of an acronym or abbreviation look here (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=gaming;action=display;num=1121064702 ;start=0#0).
You may want to skim the last Q&A thread to see if your question has already been asked and answered here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66326).

The Procedure:

Do:
Label your questions with bold Q#s.
Label your answers with the bold Q# that you are responding to and/or quote the question.
Be sure that your answer is correct before you post it; if you are the least bit uncertain, just let it pass and get the next one.
Try to give your answers in as clear and straightforward terms as possible.
Feel free to quote or link to relevant rules in the SRD, Errata, or FAQ that supports your answer. (You may want to give your answer and then modify it to add support – otherwise someone else may answer while you’re assembling yours.)
Specify if your question is for a system other than D&D (the default for this thread).

Don’t:
Ask Homebrew rules questions here.
Ask trick questions or attempt to “stump the panel,” so to speak.
Answer a question that’s already been answered.
Offer contradictions, clarifications, exceptions, or extensions of prior answers unless, in your opinion, the answer give is plainly and completely wrong.
Post to debate the answers given.
Post to carry on other conversations whether tangentially related or wholly unrelated.

Dispute Resolution Procedure:
If you dispute someone’s answer – meaning that they got it wrong in a critical fashion – post your answer and suggest that the original questioner start a thread to discuss it further if they want it hashed out.
If someone disputes your answer, don’t respond. Just wait to see if the original questioner starts a new thread to discuss it.
If your question leads to a disputed answer, start a new thread if you’d like it discussed further.

Here are some sample questions. “Bad” questions just mean they should be asked in their own thread where you can get many answers and opinions. “Good” questions just mean that these are the types of questions that are amenable to a quick straightforward answer (probably).

Sample “Bad” Questions:
How do I play D&D? (Great question, but not for this thread.)
What is a good 10 level TWF build? (Far too broad and requires much opinion)
What +2 LA race should I take for my sorcerer build? (Again, an opinion question)
Which is better GURPS or D&D?

Sample “Good” Questions:
Q.1. Are there any Large +0 LA races?
Q.2.As a sorcerer/rogue, do I get to add sneak attack damage to my attack spells?
Q.3. What effect would Dispel Magic have on a golem or similar construct?
Q.4. Is there a feat that allows me to get a familiar?
Q.5. Where can I find this “Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil” everyone is talking about?
Q.6. What is GURPS?

{The first several versions of this thread seemed to run pretty efficiently, but if you have any comments about how this thread could be improved please PM me.}

Please start over with the numbering. Thanks.

Q1. How many times a day to Bear Warriors get to use Bear form? In the first paragraph on Bear Form, it says that the only limit is the number of times you can rage per day. In later paragraphs, it says differently. I am confused. Which one is truth?

Q. 002

The Elven Spell Lore feat (PHBII) says you may choose a spell, which you may then prepare this spell as a different type of damage. My question is, what is the limit on the damage type? Is it restricted to the "big four" (acid, electricity, fire, cold) as per the Energy Subsitution feat, or would it include other types, like sonic, force, positive, negative etc. ?

Curmudgeon

A 002

You get any one of the standard 5 energy damage types: acid, cold, electricity, fire, or sonic.

When preparing that spell, you can alter the type of damage it deals to a single type of your choice. ... You can prepare the spell multiple times, selecting the same or a different energy type for it with each preparation.
From the Online D&D Glossary (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/glossary&term=Glossary_dnd_energydamage&alpha=E)
energy damage

Damage caused by one of five types of energy (not counting positive and negative energy): acid, cold, electricity, fire, and sonic.

Q. 003 Does Iron Heart Surge allow you to cure yourself of Ability Damage, Drain, or Penalty? Do they count as conditions with a duration of 1 or more rounds?

Lord Lorac Silvanos
2008-08-15, 12:31 AM
A. 003

Penalties typically fall into the effect-that-has-a-duration-longer-than-1-round category.

Ability damage and drain is listed as conditions but according to the FAQ these are not removed by Iron Heart Surge.

What exactly can or can’t iron heart surge (ToB 68)
remove?

Instantaneous effects can’t be removed by iron heart surge.
However, any effect with a duration of 1 or more rounds,
including permanent-duration spells or effects, can be removed
by iron heart surge, nor does iron heart surge restore damage or
ability drain.
Iron heart surge doesn’t replace lost levels (though it would
remove any negative levels resulting from a single spell or
effect). It would neutralize a single poison coursing through
your system, or a single disease that afflicted you.

Lord Lorac Silvanos

A. 001

The errata cleared it up. You can enter bear form as often as you rage or frenzy.

Page 16: Bear Warrior [[added 8/1/05]]
Whenever a bear warrior enters a rage or frenzy, he can
choose to assume bear form (similar to the polymorph
spell). He must remain in bear form until the end of his
rage or frenzy. When his rage or frenzy ends, the bear
warrior immediately returns to his own form.
The number of times a bear warrior can assume bear
form is the number of times per day he enters a rage or
frenzy. Ignore the conflicting limitations specified in the
third, fourth, and fifth paragraphs of the bear form
description.

Q. 005
One of the features granted by the Mythic Exemplar PrC (CC p.86) increases the critical threat range of a weapon by 1. The ability specifically says it's stacks with Keen or Improved Critical. My question: do you add the extra 1 before or after the other factors? Would a character with a Keen scimitar have a threat range of 14-20, or 13-20?

Q. 006

On damage reduction: If a DR is stated as being overcome by a specific material (DR 5/silver for example) is this damage reduction also overcome by any magic weapon? Would a +1 Dagger overcome the damage reduction of a werewolf, even if it wasn't silver?

Lord Lorac Silvanos
2008-08-15, 04:15 PM
A. 006

No, you have to have a weapon of said material, e.g. silver. (This was different in 3.0, where there was a hierarchy of special materials/magic)

Q. 007
On damage reduction as well: If i have DR and i later acquire a different type of DR (for example a werewolf with levels in warlock). Do they stack? if so How?

Lord Lorac Silvanos
2008-08-15, 04:33 PM
A. 007

DR reduction overlaps, which still means that the types "stack" if not the numbers.

Example:
If a creature has DR 5/Silver and DR 10/Magic the weapon needed to completely negate the DR must be magic and silver.
If the weapon is non-magical silver the first ten points of damage are negated by the DR 10/Magic.
If the weapon is magical non-silver the first five points of damage are negated by the DR 5/Silver.
If the weapon is neither silver nor magical it faces the better of the two types, so the first ten points of damage are negated by the DR 10/Magic.

Chronos

A 00eight: And means and, and or means or. So for instance, to bypass an imp (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/devil.htm#imp)'s DR (5/good or silver), any old silver weapon will do, as will any old good weapon. But to bypass a pit fiend's (15/good and silver) the weapon needs to be both made of silver and good-aligned.

Q. 009

How much would a wand of Death Ward cost?

RTGoodman
2008-08-15, 11:51 PM
A. 009

According to the guidelines, the standard formula for a making a spell into a wand is 375 gp x spell level x caster level. That gives us (using the minimum caster level and assuming a Cleric is crafting it) a total of 10,500 gp to craft a wand of death ward, and a market price of a 21,000 gp.

These are guidelines, of course, so as always check with your DM to confirm the price.

Douglas

A009
Actually, for wands (scrolls and potions, too) the formula really is a hard and fast rule, not just a guideline. At the standard minimum caster level for the main class with the spell, the market price is 750 * 4 * 7 = 21000.

A. 014

I am not near my totems at the moment, so I am not sure about the requirements listed, but the DCs for jumping can be found under the jump skill in the PHB.

A long jump of 5 feet requires a DC 5, while a high jump of 5 feet requires a DC 20. (High jump is probably what you are looking for)
Those DCs assume a 20 feet running start. Without that the DC is doubled.

Does a temporary ability score increase allow extra usage of daily powers based on that score? For instance, a 4th level Paladin with 16 CHA can lay on hands for 12 points per day. Say he has already used the 12 points, but then someone casts Eagle’s Splendor on him. Can he now heal another 8 points for the day? Would a Knight gain extra uses of his Knight’s Challenge? Touch or a probing search reveals the true nature of the surface, though such measures do not cause the illusion to disappear.
A 015

There is no specification for a Reflex save for this spell, but the floor is immediately recognizable as an illusion at first contact with the toe of the leading foot, before any significant weight is placed on the image. The DMG suggests a general guideline of a DC 15 Reflex save to avoid similar environmental encounters.

A 016 Indefinitely, until the spell is discharged.

Casting the spell charges your hand(s); that charge remains until you succeed on an attack, or discharge the spell accidentally by touching something that's a valid target for that particular spell.

Holding the Charge

If you don’t discharge the spell in the round when you cast the spell, you can hold the discharge of the spell (hold the charge) indefinitely.

Q 018

Does a warlock's eldritch blast qualify as 'using a weapon' as far as a buckler is concerned? As an SLA, I'd think not...

Buckler
This small metal shield is worn strapped to your forearm. You can use a bow or crossbow without penalty while carrying it. You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether you are using an off-hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon), but you take a -1 penalty on attack rolls while doing so. This penalty stacks with those that may apply for fighting with your off hand and for fighting with two weapons. In any case, if you use a weapon in your off hand, you don’t get the buckler’s AC bonus for the rest of the round.

Curmudgeon
2008-08-17, 11:29 PM
A 017 Yes.

Temporary ability increases will temporarily increase uses/day. Keep track of total daily uses, and compare them against those permitted by the current level of the determining ability.

Curmudgeon
2008-08-17, 11:32 PM
A 018 No.
Usually, a spell-like ability works just like the spell of that name. Casting a spell does not count as using a weapon, so neither does a SLA.

A. 016 Clarification

A 016 Indefinitely, until the spell is discharged.

Casting the spell charges your hand(s); that charge remains until you succeed on an attack, or discharge the spell accidentally by touching something that's a valid target for that particular spell.

The spell will discharge even if what you charge is not a valid target of the spell. If the target is illegal the spell would discharge harmlessly.

If you touch anything or anyone while holding a charge, even unintentionally, the spell discharges.

Curmudgeon
2008-08-18, 08:42 AM
The spell will discharge even if what you charge is not a valid target of the spell. If the target is illegal the spell would discharge harmlessly.A 016 further clarification

There are necessarily some limits to this. If your fingers rub together, the spell does not discharge. When you move, touching the ground does not discharge the spell. Swimming does not discharge the spell (because fluids in D&D don't count as objects). Your attended objects are already considered touched by you, so drawing a weapon does not discharge the spell.

Some DMs add cinematic effects commentary to their games, along the lines of "You attempt to hit the big orc, but your knuckles bounce harmlessly off his armor." Touching the orc's armor in this fashion does not discharge the spell, because a successful attack roll is required.

The air, the ground, your person, and your attended objects (with exceptions for particular spells) are not valid targets for touch spells, and thus touching them has no effect. Rendering first aid to a fallen comrade, or picking up a dropped weapon, will discharge a touch spell unintentionally.

Lord Lorac Silvanos
2008-08-18, 09:27 AM
A. 016 Further musings

A 016 further clarification

There are necessarily some limits to this.

Absolutely, you may for instance wear gauntlets or gloves and touch through those.

Your attended objects are already considered touched by you, so drawing a weapon does not discharge the spell.

It is attended, yes, but you are not necessarily touching it in a discharging sense if you assume that only the limb you deliver touch attack with is holding the charge. (Which I believe is also the RAI, defaulting to the hand)

Under such an interpretation drawing any item would also discharge the spell.

Curmudgeon
2008-08-18, 10:19 AM
A 016 even further musings

It is attended, yes, but you are not necessarily touching it in a discharging sense if you assume that only the limb you deliver touch attack with is holding the charge. (Which I believe is also the RAI, defaulting to the hand)
The problem with this interpretation is that there isn't a limb designated (or even required) for delivering touch attacks.

Alternatively, you may make a normal unarmed attack (or an attack with a natural weapon) while holding a charge.
Unarmed Attacks

Striking for damage with punches, kicks, and head butts ... By RAW you may attack with a head butt and deliver a touch attack spell. There's also no requirement that you designate a particular part of your body as the "touching" part ahead of time. You are allowed to move without discharging the spell.
You may take your move before casting the spell, after touching the target, or between casting the spell and touching the target. This movement without discharging the spell still applies even if you are walking over objects (difficult terrain) and later use your foot to deliver the touch. If you are holding a Bless Weapon spell, provoke an AoO during this movement, and are struck by an enemy's weapon the spell still does not discharge because the rules permit you to make your move before you touch the target, even with the same part of your body that contacted the enemy's weapon.

As you can see, some parts of the rules stipulating what actions you can perform without discharging the spell contradict the statement about accidental discharge. While you are afforded a bonus attack to deliver a touch spell in the round in which you cast it, you don't get to deliver the spell "for free" during movement, either intentionally or unintentionally.

As always, when parts of the RAW are contradictory, DMs have extra work to do.

Lord Lorac Silvanos
2008-08-18, 10:33 AM
A. 016 Musings and interpretations continued

Interpretations are required to reconcile the apparent contradictions.

I think the reason is simple, hands are assumed to the standard way of delivering touch spells (with the stipulation that other things can be designated as holding the charge.)

This is also seen from spell such as Chill Touch.

Even if one choses to ignore this (which I believe to be RAI) and maintain the contradiction there is still not made any allowance for drawing weapons by the RAW.

A 024: Those benefits only apply to racial hit dice. Furthermore, if a creature with only one RHD takes a character class, the first class level replaces the RHD. So, for instance, an aasimar character with class levels doesn't gain any benefit from racial hit dice.

If a Handy Haversack/other extradimensional storage item is stored in a Glove of Storing, is it still an active extra-d storage, or is it temporarily inactive while stored in this fashion? Chronos
2008-08-18, 10:13 PM
A 25: In 3.x edition, the only penalty for nesting extradimensional spaces is if you put a portable hole into a bag of holding, or vice-versa. 2nd edition and earlier had general rules for putting one extradimensional space in another, which always had unpleasant consequences, but in 3rd, the only remnant of that rule is the specific case of BoH/PH, and a cryptic warning in the text of Rope Trick which isn't supported by any rules.

Be warned, however, that if your DM is an old-timer, he may not realize that that rule was removed (or might not agree that it should have been removed), and might make bad things happen anyway.

Q27 Is the any feats or classes that grant natural armour (not improve existing natural armour. I have read the monster manual) that synergise well with a rogue.

A 27 Partial

Off the top of my head, the only feat I can think of that GIVES natural armor the Demonic Skin [Abyssal Heritor] feat from Fiendish Codex I. Specifically, it gives +1 to natural armor and +1 per [Abyssal Heritor] feat you have, but gives a penalty to Escape Artist checks. It doesn't have any pre-requisites, but taking more than one [Abyssal Heritor] feat forces you to shift to a Chaotic alignment.

EDIT: Also, regarding effectiveness for a Rogue, I guess the Abyssal Heritor feats aren't that bad (as long as you're willing to be Chaotic). Demonic Skin gives natural armor, Demonic Sneak Attack lets you re-roll SA dice, Eyes of the Abyss gives darkvision and some skill bonuses, Cloak of the Obyrith gives DR/lawful, Primordial Scion makes attacks Chaotic-aligned and deal extra damage to Lawful foes, and stuff like that. And the more of the feats you take, the better each gets since a lot of bonuses are determined by number of Abyssal Heritor feats you have.

EDIT: Also, regarding effectiveness for a Rogue, I guess the Abyssal Heritor feats aren't that bad ... Demonic Sneak Attack lets you re-roll SA dice
This is a poor choice relative to alternative feat options. At best (if you have enough qualifying feats) you'll be able to reroll all sub-average sneak attack dice (values 1-3), and on average convert them to mean (3.5) value. That's a maximum expected improvement from 2 (average of 1-3) to 3.5, or +1.5 per sub-average die. Your sub-average numbers will statistically represent half your sneak attack dice. A Rogue gets 1 sneak attack die every 2 levels. So the best return this feat can offer, on average, is +1.5/4 levels, or +0.375 points of extra damage/Rogue level. (With fewer Abyssal heritor feats your return is less than this.)

Contrast this to Craven (Champions of Ruin), which offers +1 point of sneak attack damage per character level, and you can see that Demonic Sneak Attack is an inferior choice.

The animal growth (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/animalGrowth.htm) spell lets you increase an animal's size by one category, but I don't think that's enough for your dubious purposes. I don't know of any other spell that would work. The psionic power expansion (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/expansion.htm) allows a person to increase their size more than one category, but you'd have to find a way for your animal to be able to manifest expansion AND be able to augment it with an extra 6 power points.

Seems like a job for prestidigitation to me. Or, I guess, some polymorph spell, but that seems like a little overkill to me.

I believe starting gold for Warlock's was accidentally omitted from CAr, and it wasn't errata'd, so I there's no real RAW answer. Unless the FAQ has something to say (which I doubt), I think the consensus of a bunch of people on various D&D forums is that they should just get the same starting gold as a Bard. Seems like a reasonable house-rule to me.

No, not unless it is an intelligent mount that gets to act on its own initiative count.

A mount controlled by you acts in unison with you, so you have to use overlapping actions to move along with the mount for instance (but you can perform a move action at the same time like drawing an item or you can fire your bow at a penalty while the mount moves and in that way perform a full-attack even if the mount moves).

Are druids restricted to using Handle Animal checks to control their pets to do simple things like attack, stay, and such?

Do magical item bonuses (not weapons or armor) apply to your wildshape form when you shift? As far as I can tell, unlike weapons and armor, wonderous items always shift to fit their new master. At least regarding animal companions, Druids do get a special advantage for handle animal.

Link (Ex)
A druid can handle her animal companion as a free action, or push it as a move action, even if she doesn’t have any ranks in the Handle Animal skill. The druid gains a +4 circumstance bonus on all wild empathy checks and Handle Animal checks made regarding an animal companion.

A 35: Wildshape has been the subject of many errata and rule changes. Under the current rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/druid.htm#wildShape),
Any gear worn or carried by the druid melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When the druid reverts to her true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on her body that they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items worn in the assumed form fall off and land at the druid's feet.So no, your Belt of Giant Strength won't still work. However, you could take off your belt, turn into a dire bear or whatever, and then put your belt back on in bear form (presumably with help from someone with opposable thumbs).

squishycube

I think you think Minor Change Shape does more radical things than it does. It is based on disguise self (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/disguiseSelf.htm) which does not enable you to look like someone from a different race, it just enables you to change your appearance within your race. This is a bit strange, since you can disguise as another race with the disguise skill (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/disguise.htm) and disguise self gives a bonus to disguise checks. Anyhow, keep this in mind.

A36
No, different race

A37
Yes, changing appearance

A38
Note that living construct is a subtype, so probably the text says you gain the living construct subtype and if it doesn't it is wrong and should say that. Your type would be your first suggestion, Human (Shapechanger, Living Construct).

A39
The same limits apply as before, you can look like a different person, but not a different race. Your 'race' is now a bit vague though and it probably needs some DM ruling how the limits of disguise self apply here.

They are actually not the same, the one is called Sunlight Powerlessness and the other Daylight Powerlessness.
The spectre (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/spectre.htm)'s is explained:

Sunlight Powerlessness (Ex)

Spectres are powerless in natural sunlight (not merely a daylight spell) and flee from it. A spectre caught in sunlight cannot attack and can take only a single move action or standard action in a round.
The wraith (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/wraith.htm)'s misses the crunch, but does add "utterly" (wooo!)

Daylight Powerlessness (Ex)

Wraiths are utterly powerless in natural sunlight (not merely a daylight spell) and flee from it.
I think in practice there is no difference, although by pure RAW the wraith could use double moves or the run action to get out of the sunlight whereas the spectre can't. Alternatively, the wraith could use a charge action to get out of the sunlight (and still get an attack in too!).
Obviously this is silly and I would limit the wraith to a single move or standard action as well, but that is not what the RAW says.

The FAQ provides this indirect answer. You need to have access to your material component or focus, which is also why painting your God's symbol on your boot will not meet the requirement of a holy symbol.

What exactly counts as a “purely mental” action, such
as those allowed to the second mind created by the schism
power (XPH 130)? Does a silent, still spell count? What
about a spell-like ability or a quickened spell?

The schism power specifically includes manifesting a
power as an example of a purely mental action. Elsewhere in
XPH, this is expanded to include “casting spells with no verbal,
somatic, or material components.” Thus, a silent, still spell
wouldn’t count unless the spell also had no material
components (including focuses). ...

Taking 10

When your character is not being threatened or distracted, you may choose to take 10.
When a binder offers a pact, a contest of wills ensues between him and the vestige. This contest might be played out by means of an argument, a staring match, a riddle posed to the binder, or in any number of other ways. If the vestige ultimately wins, it maintains an amount of influence over the binder for the duration of the pact. Binding is not a risk-free undertaking, so taking 10 is not allowed.

Well, I don't see anything that says you CAN'T gain any of the other pact's powers; in fact, as far as I know, you're not even limited to taking them with your non-At-Will powers. Just pick another At-Will that sounds cool and go with it.

A 054

(Assuming 3.x rather than 4E)

Well, I don't know about "devoted" to healing, but there are a lot of ways to heal in 3.x without being "divine." Binding the vestige Buer (ToM) offers healing powers, and if you play in a party of undead (or necropolitan) characters you can get unlimited healing from the Dread Necromancer class (which I think is arcane, but it could be divine). The Crusader class from Tome of Battle is a mundane (i.e., non-magical) method of healing and gains both stances and maneuvers to heal himself or others. (Note: The powers aren't "divine," but the class has a strong connection to the divine." From the same book, the Shadow-Sun Ninja PrC offers an ability to channel positive and negative energy (alternating), so you can heal with it if you find a method to use up the negative energy (like an undead in the party, necropolitan, etc.).

I'm sure there are others, but others can list those. Also, Google is your friend.

1 round as a duration lasts until just before your initiative count in the next round (right before your next turn).

This holds regardless of casting time as long as the the casting time is less than 1 round.

If the casting time is a standard action this leaves no room for full attacks unless you can take more than one standard action a round.

Anything less than a move action casting time would allow you to make one full attack assuming you still have a move action and a standard action available.

I hope that was reasonably clear.

A55 extra note
Wraithstrike and most similar 1 round buffs are actually swift actions to cast. You do not need to Quicken them, as they are already quickened for free as part of the base spell. You can cast it and immediately make a full attack normally. If you Extend it, you would get to make two full attacks before it expired - one in the round you cast it, one in the next round.

If you really want to get cheesy, Wraithstrike is eligible for Persistent Spell, which makes it last 24 hours.

No, you cannot use Power Attack with light weapons (other than unarmed attacks and natural weapons), and both spiked gauntlets and armor spikes are light weapons.
The normal gauntlet is listed as an unarmed attack on the weapons table, so you could Power Attack with it, but not the spiked gauntlet. Counter-intuitive, but that's the RAW.

Q. 61 on the virtue of being a humanoid.

I'm working from memory here, so bear with me:

Goliaths are monsterous humanoids, and therefore cannot benifit from spells such as enlarge person.

Dragonborn can be applied to almost anything, including monsterous humanoids. This changes their types to Humanoid, with the reptilian, or draconic, or some subtype like that. They also retain any subtypes they had previously.

So a Dragonborn Goliath can benifit from Enlarge Person?

If Dragonborn changes your type to Humanoid (I'm away from book so I can't check on this) and can be applied to Goliath then yes, you could benefit from Enlarge Person (or any other spell that requires a humanoid target).

According to RotD:

Humanoid (dragonblood): Dragonborn are humanoids with the dragonblood subtype and any other subtypes they had before undergoing the Rite of Rebirth. For all effects related to race, a dragonborn is considered a dragon and a member of her original race.
I would say that a Goliath Dragonborn would have the Dragon and Monstrous Humanoid types, and the Dragonblood subtype, so not be eligible for Enlarge Person etc.

Can a construct be made out of water? Is it possible for an Animated Object or Golem-esque creature to by made from a liquid, such as a puddle or font of holy water?

The description of the Construct monster entry says,

Anything is possible if your DM allows it, but I doubt a body of water would qualify as an object for the purpose of the Animate Objects spell.

The previous answer before the edit was correct. By a strict RAW you cannot power attack with either, since a gauntlet unfortunately is a light weapon.

A. 060

Q. 060 Can you use extra attacks granted from Two-Weapon Fighting to make Grapple Checks?

No. Grapple checks are derived from you BAB and not the number of attacks you ordinarily would be able to make. Furthermore, you cannot attack with more than one weapon in a grapple.

P.s. Obviously, the paragraphs on unarmed strikes, the gauntlet and grappling could use a major re-write, so house rules in these areas may be a good place to start if one consider to play something other than a strict RAW game.

- If you cast it at the end of your turn, it lasts until the end of your next turn
- Same thing goes for quickened, only in this case you can cast it at the beginning of your turn and then it lasts until the end of that turn
- By extending it you'd get a max of 2 full attacks

Also btw, Wraithstrike is cast as a swift action, so there's no need to quicken it.

No, not by a strict reading, but there some strong indications that it might be RAI such as various contradicting FAQ answers and less than clear language in the Rules Compendium. The PHB (3.5) states that you add your strength modifier to melee damage, later saying that you apply your strength 'bonus' to damage. 'Bonus' is defined by the PHB as a positive modifier. Does this mean my halfling rogue with a STR of 6 has been taking a -2 to damage for no good reason?

The PHB talks about modifier in the general rules for applying your modifier to damage, so your Halfling has been following the rules and for good reason.

Some of the more specific rules say bonus rather than modifier to avoid any confusion about applying half your str penalty for off-hand weapons or 1.5 times your str penalty for using a weapon two-handed.

Theoretically there could be a difference, but I doubt there is anything in 3.5 that fits that distinction.

The Factotum is not an arcane caster and the Factotum does not have an arcane caster level. The factotum cast spells drawn from the sorcerer/wizard spell list as spell-like abilities and has a caster level equal to the number of levels in the Factotum class.

For example, I know there is a gang of bandits within 100 miles of my location, and I know they have a leader. You are correct, this was an omission and it was not cleared up by errata.

In the previous version of the D&D game, having levels in a
prestige class never caused you to pay the experience
penalty for being a multiclass character without uneven
class levels. (The prestige class levels didn’t count when
checking to see if you had a penalty.) The section on
prestige classes in the new DMG no longer mentions that
you don’t suffer an experience penalty for having levels in a

Q 74

In a one-on-one combat, if my opponent gets held, I can try a coup de grace against him/her/it/whatever. However, if I believe that the coup de grace might not be enough to finish him/her/it/whatever off, and I decide to disarm my opponent's weapon (which has been annoying me) instead, how would the disarm check work?

Normally, the disarm attempt would draw an AoO, but my opponent can't act. Then it requires opposed attack rolls, but my opponent can't attack.

Do I automatically succeed on the disarm attempt?

Ditto on taking a worn item, such as a shield or stat-boosting item.

And one final follow-up, I can make as many disarm attempts as I have attacks, correct?

Lord Lorac Silvanos
2008-08-28, 08:13 AM
A. 074

There is no automatic success outlined for attack rolls other than the coup de grace, however your opponent is treated as having a str/dex score of 0 when helpless and you get a +4 bonus on attack rolls when attacking a helpless target.

The opponent cannot react to try and disarm you and cannot take an AoO against you, so you have as many free disarm attempts as you have attacks and at a considerable bonus.

You can grab other items as per the rules described under the Disarm special attack, but these also follow the normal rules.

A reasonable house rule would be to allow a guaranteed disarm result instead of a coup de grace as a full round action.

Assuming the wielder is medium or small, the Drow Scorpion Chain (Races of Eberron) fits the bill, but that's basically still just a spiked chain.

Yes, at least for the primary natural weapon.

Secondary weapons take a -5 penalty as does a primary weapon when used as a secondary such as when the creature is making attacks with manufactured weapons.

Primary weapons add str to damage, secondary only half str to damage. A sole natural weapon used alone grants one and a half times str bonus to damage.

Yes, the monk's (and everyone else's) unarmed strikes are not natural weapons, but the monk's are also treated as such for the purpose of spells and effects that can effect them. (e.g. say some spell that enhances a natural weapon)

If the creature is normally capable of combining natural weapon attacks with manufactured weapons it is possible as a full attack to make all iterative unarmed strike attacks followed by the natural weapons of the creature.
(e.g. a lizardfolk monk making iterative unarmed strikes with kicks followed by secondary natural weapon bite and claw attacks.)

If the creature is not capable of combining weapon attacks with unarmed strikes (e.g. a Blink Dog) monk levels will not alleviate this and teh creature would have to choose between natural weapons or unarmed strikes during a full attack.

Q 80 Continued Again-

Alright, so just to make sure I have this straight, a monster that can use weapons and a natural attack at the same time (Such as a harpy or Medusa) could make use of a monk attack, but monsters that cannot (Such as a Manticore, or an Awakened Deinonychus as specifically mentioned in a sidebar on page 10 of "Savage Species" as being unable to use weapons) can't combine the two.

Eithe way, thank you so much for the info! Best. Beholder. Ever.

The FAQ author figured this out for us. Basically you fall 500' in the first round and reach terminal velocity. After that you fall 1200' each additional round.

That's for nonwinged creatures. Winged creatures use the stalling rules, falling 150' in the first round, and 300' each round thereafter.

A creature has to have a con score in order to have regeneration right? So then how does an Atropal have regeneration? It's an undead; it has no con score. I know it's an abomination but shouldn't it still follow the rules? That means you can't even knock it out because all the damage you deal is converted to subdual which it is immune to. The charge lasts for one minute or until the first time the weapon hits something, at which point the extra damage is inflicted on whatever was hit. Those are the only limits. In brief, your reading is correct: You may continue to recharge the weapon for extra damage until you no longer have enough power points to do so.

A91 and 92
No. Feats and skill points must be spent at the level they are gained.

A93
No. For some abilities there are improved versions of the ability (Flaming Burst, for example), but that is the closest you can get.

A94a
No. A charge is a particular full round action that happens to include an attack. Most strikes are specific standard or full round actions that happen to include an attack. They cannot, in general, be combined. Some strikes happen to include a charge as part of the maneuver, but that is the exception, not the rule.

A94b
Yes. Power Attack is an option available each round that imposes a set of modifiers on melee attacks. How you get those attacks is irrelevant, the modifiers apply to all of them.

A94 general
There is an important distinction between things that happen to include melee attacks, things that modify melee attacks, and things that are melee attacks. Something in the first category cannot be combined with anything in the same category, but is affected by things in the second and can use things in the third. Something in the second category can be combined without limit with any of the three categories, including additional modifiers, providing the conditions for each modifier are met. Something in the third category can be substituted for a normal melee attack unless a more specific rule states otherwise.

Examples of the first category:
Charge, strikes, full attack, Spring Attack

Examples of the second category:
Power Attack, Combat Expertise, Stone Power, Haste

Examples of the third category:
Disarm, sunder, trip

You could, for example, charge with a -5 penalty for each of Power Attack and Combat Expertise and attempt to trip your target at the end of the charge.

For feats, PHB page 59, first column, first paragraph. Feats is step 7 in the formal levelup process. Note that at each appropriate level you gain a feat directly, not a point to be spent on a feat or some similar construction.

You can use a tower shield as total cover. Assuming you total cover vs. the caster, which of the following spells would still be able to affect you: Magic Missile, Charm Person, Slow and Fireball.

Curmudgeon
2008-08-31, 08:14 AM
A 97

Only Fireball, because it has this line:
Area: 20-ft.-radius spread All the other spells have a Target: specification.
Target or Targets

Some spells have a target or targets. You cast these spells on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself. You must be able to see or touch the target, and you must specifically choose that target.
Total Cover

If you don’t have line of effect to your target he is considered to have total cover from you. You can’t make an attack against a target that has total cover.
Line of Effect

A line of effect is a straight, unblocked path that indicates what a spell can affect. A line of effect is canceled by a solid barrier. It’s like line of sight for ranged weapons, except that it’s not blocked by fog, darkness, and other factors that limit normal sight.

You must have a clear line of effect to any target that you cast a spell on or to any space in which you wish to create an effect. You must have a clear line of effect to the point of origin of any spell you cast. (I included multiple quotes because the definitions of "line of effect" and "total cover" are rather circular.)

All of them. Curmudgeon missed a quote.

Shield, Tower

This massive wooden shield is nearly as tall as you are. In most situations, it provides the indicated shield bonus to your AC. However, you can instead use it as total cover, though you must give up your attacks to do so. The shield does not, however, provide cover against targeted spells; a spellcaster can cast a spell on you by targeting the shield you are holding. You cannot bash with a tower shield, nor can you use your shield hand for anything else.

When employing a tower shield in combat, you take a -2 penalty on attack rolls because of the shield’s encumbrance.

You apply the benefits of a feat that increases class abilities to every applicable class unless the feat specifies otherwise.
Benefit: You rage or frenzy two more times per day than you otherwise could All classes that provide rage or frenzy features would be boosted by 2 uses per day.

Assuming by "gasult" you actually mean gestalt (a German word meaning shape or form, pronounced "guh-shtawlt") then you would get two more uses for every class that includes frenzy or rage. Gestalt classes get the best combination of their components, so if either of the component classes had rage or frenzy you would get +2 daily uses. If both component classes had rage, or both had frenzy, you would still get only +2 daily uses. Also, since the benefit is exclusive ("rage or frenzy"), if you combined a class that had rage with a class that had frenzy, you would only get +2 daily uses of one of these, not both. A gestalt class, despite being combined from multiple component classes, is still only a single class, so Extra Rage would apply to that class once.

Again, I'm assuming "Gesult" actually means gestalt (a German word meaning shape or form, pronounced "guh-shtawlt").

Gestalt characters get the best of the combination of classes, not their sum. For example, a Wizard//Mystic Theurge gestalt level would get

+1 level of arcane (Wizard) class from the Wizard component; and
+1 level of arcane class, plus +1 level of divine class from the Mystic Theurge component.

Taking the best of the combination, you would get

+1 level of arcane class, plus +1 level of divine class.

So you can't get +2 Wizard levels from the combination.

Edit: You could have something like a Sorcerer//Cleric and Wizard//Mystic Theurge combination. Then you could specify the arcane caster boost from the Mystic Theurge component as applying to the Sorcerer component, and boost the caster level of your Sorcer, Cleric, and Wizard abilities with this gestalt class level. It's still the best combination of +1 caster level to various classes, though; you still can't get +2 caster levels from the combination.

Incorrect Curmudgeon.

MT gives a different class feature than regular leveling in a casting class. RAW they stack, which is why it is strongly recommended that you ban multiple progression PrC's in gestalt (no MT) and force the progression to be on the same side as the class you are progressing.

So no Wizard 20//Warblade 5/ Incantatrix 10/ Archmage 5 that casts as a level 35 wizard.

How exactly does the Rune Magic (Ex) ability interact with spontaneous spellcasting, such as that granted by a sorcerer? A sorcerer can meet the prerequisites of the class, and the class's flavor text even specifically mentions dwarven sorcerers taking levels in the class. The ability speaks about preparing spells as runestones--do those who do not prepare spells normally have to prepare spells in order to gain the benefit of Rune Magic? Do they benefit in spite of not preparing spells? Are they simply unable to benefit unless they somehow gain the ability to prepare spells (such as from a feat or another class)?

See Table: Small or Large Monk Unarmed Damage (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/monk.htm). For other sizes, use the values on Table 2-2: Increasing Weapon Damage by Size on page 28 of your 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide.

A 107c

Having the Pounce ability lets you make a full attack when you charge. But War Master's Charge deals an extra 50 points on "your charge attack" (singular), not on every attack following the first one. You charge and make your attack. War Master's Charge gives you an extra 50 points of damage. Pounce gives you the option to continue with iterative attacks after this first one, but War Master's Charge does not apply.
