If you've made your own personal OOTS avatar, post it here (if you don't have it currently "equipped", or just post saying that your current one is your personal one. :)

I just made mine a few minutes ago.

I made mine a Penguin. He kinda stretches out on some monitors on this forum. Kinda weird.

This is mine.

I also made avatars for TheChris and Calyn.

Nice job, guys!

Mine's supposed to have a battleaxe strapped to his back, but I'm not sure I did it right. :-/

Plus, his arms just dangling out there looks a lil dumb. :P

As I've said in other threads, my eldest daughter made this one for me. I don't call her "my in-house artist" jokingly - she's the most artistically talented of anyone in my house. That's why I didn't make the avatar myself. :-)

I really like yours, chaotic wun...

I think I need to get a better program - like photoshop or illustrator, I made mine in paint and no matter what I do, I can't get it to look right. The lines are always jagged and sort of blurred. Of course, I should probably re-do my own, as TheChris's and Calyn's are much better than mine. Gotten better with practice, I guess. =)

Yes, I highly recommend Photoshop. Your can do most anything with it (graphically, that is). :D

MS Paint can't do anti-aliasing, which is how the lines on my ones look so smooth. Although, if you look closely, the normal avatars have white jaggies surrounding them from the AAing. You just can't see them on these light backgrounds.

I am planning on putting up a fanart page soon; anyone who posts their avatar here can have it included if they want.

I think your avatar looks good, Chaotic Wun. I assumed it was made by the Giant - you can't get better praise than that ;)

My only criticism is that I think the axehead would be carried at the top, i.e. the axe would be carried the other way up.

A much cheaper alternative to Photoshop is Paint Shop Pro (by Jasc Software, $74 download price) which incorporates the vector features of illustrator with the raster features of photoshop (only Photoshop is that much more powerful, but what is lacking in PSP won't really bother you with these types of images).

There's a 3rd even cheaper solution, GIMP for Windows, however, this is a windows port of a linux application. As such, the computer geek factor of trying to use it is pretty high. But it does a great job at giving you many many of the tools available to Photoshop users. And the GIMP is open source, so it's free to use in non-commercial environment.

I've been using PSP for years and the GIMP for months, and while Rich scoffs at everything non-adobe, I stand firmly and say "For your money, they're excellent solutions".

I tried in MSPaint. It did not turn out reall good. So I just made a parody of Kill Bill out of what had began as my attempt at a Personal avatar.'

I am gonna go have to mess around with my friend's Photoshop sometime.

Chatoic, yours looks awesome.

Thanks for the compliments, people. ;D

My only criticism is that I think the axehead would be carried at the top, i.e. the axe would be carried the other way up.
Yeah, I wondered about that, but I ended up putting it on blade-down, because I figured he would reach back and pull it out by the handle; not by the blade, although, considering the weight that would be in the blade, the damn thing would clatter to the ground every time he took a step. ;)

EDIT: Note to those who care; fixed it.

In the spirit of selling non Photoshop options to people, I made this with the GIMP. I'd prefer to have taken more time with the proportions, but I still think she's pretty cute.

Also, I present the TM fairy (tm):

I used to think that too... Until I saw what a huge range of filters were avaliable with Photoshop 7, while with PSP 7, there are really no filters at all.

I use Photoshop 7.

Anyway, that's a nice job with the fairy, as well as RawBearNYC's character. The only suggestion I have for Raw is the smile; it looks too precise and wide to be an OOTS smile.

Well, technically, you don't know how wide the smile is, you're assuming that it's symmetrical, maybe she's had a stroke and that's why her hair covers half of her face :P

But realistically, there are several things that should be fixed in that, but I was going for speed more than accuracy, since I'm not actually making an avatar, just an educational experiment.

That's because PSP7 sucks. Use PSP8!

Plus, a lot of PS filters can be used with PSP. I'm not entirely sure how, and there is techno-jiggery-pokery required.

Chaotic_Wun
2004-07-25, 02:03 PM
I don't like the techno-jiggery-pokery stuff much.

I must say I haven't tried PSP 8 much... I've been too hooked on PS 7, but if you ask me, they're about the same.

Here are the other two avatars that I have designed for this board.

Calyn's and TheChris's
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Alarra/calyn.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/Alarra/TheChris.jpg

Both were done in paint, which is the only program I have right now. Although I plan to get photoshop soon and then will probably redo at least my own avatar.

Giant:
"MS Paint can't do anti-aliasing"

True, but you can smooth the lines manually. I've been doing that to OOTS figs for my tabletop sessions. I can't post them to show it (no modified avatar rule), but it looks better than jaggy MSPaint lines and isn't that difficult - just tedious.

If I had webspace I'd probably make a personal avatar for the boards.

I have no drawing talents at all (though some minor skills) and my only program is MS Paint, since I never figured out how PSPx works (and nobody will instruct me, I don't care). Hence I do a lot of pixel stuff with it, and frankly, even though I'm saying, I think I can pretty good "anti-aliasing" with that crap-of-a-program.

Wish I could get a stick figure of ol' Gorby to look right (my graphic manipulation skills are not up to snuff). The image I use is pulled from art done by one WebTroll, who's the artist for the comic Gaming Guardians [the art is (C) WebTroll, but Gorbash is (C) me].

Thank's, Petey! In case I've switched my avatar around, here's his work below:
http://plaza.ufl.edu/redwolf/gorbash.gif

Here's my avatar. It is based off of The Giant's, but I only used his for a size comparison. Of course, I also have glasses and a goatee (but no hair on top!), so it seemed like such a good model to use. Unfortunately, I was stuck only with Paint, so the image quality is quite yucky.

Any chance I could get someone with a real graphics program to rework it for me?

Thanks!

Take care and have a great day....

Erm... Okay, having had about six hours of free time, I cobbled this together ^_^;
http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/maskcrew.jpg
It's all the characters in my DnD group!
From left to right...
http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/sara.gif
Sara, the halfling rogue. I have no clue why she's wearing hot pink, except maybe so that I could use another color on her besides black and peach. She has a habit of, well, not thinking her actions through to their conclusion.

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/tara.gif
Tara, the wizard. She tends to be the quiet one in the group, and rarely speaks unless spoken to. Nevertheless, she becomes a veritable bombadeer in battle, using not much more than fireballs, lightning bolts, and other high-damage spells. Her familiar is Sandro, a tabby cat, and her robes are mood robes, changing color depending on her emotions.

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/elan.gif
Elan, the NPC cleric. Not having a cleric in the group, Elan helped fill in the niche for a long time in the game. She eventually moved on to other things, but the party still holds a fond place for her. She's a cleric of Fharlanghn, in the Luck domain, and tends to be a bit scatterbrained. True to her deity, she often has amazing runs of suspiciously good luck.

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/artimus.gif
Artimus, the Bard. He's the party leader, acting as the face of the group and the lead decision maker, despite his vain attitude and flamboyant dress. He takes pride in his image, and in how others perceive him.

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/Fletcher.gif
Fletcher, the Fighter. As the party tank, Fletch has gotten to love his Armor of Convenience. This magic armor takes only a single round to fit itself to his body after he shouts the magic command word, "Assemble." His axe, Jorak's Lopper, is a Keen +1 great axe that he's kept with him for most of his adventuring career. He can be moody, but when in combat, he just goes downright psychopath on any poor victim in his way.

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/yuki.gif
Yuki, half-dragon sorceress. She uses a Permanent illusion spell to hide her true form. Despite her classes in sorceress, the super strength afforded her by her dragon side makes her a powerful warrior as well. The rest of her party doesn't know about her dragon heritage yet, so she does her best to hide her incredible strength and other supernatural powers. She is concerned about her image, and can be incredibly persuasive, but doesn't have much common sense and often puts her foot in her mouth.

I've just tried to make my favourite character. He is from a custom system (D20-based) without classes. He is a priest of the Menetian (pseudo-egypt) god of death, who is also the protector of the souls of the dead (he is _NOT_ evil!!!). The holy animal of Ska is the scorpion, thus the staff. Besides his priesthood, Nefertem Optra is set to protect the balance of forces, and to be able to do his god's work he studies the arcane arts (which are very seldom and feared in that world). Well long words, short meaning, here he is.

It's a shame I can't resize him to 117x117 pixels without loosing all the painfully drawn details :-(

I just finished doing something like what you did. Lol, it took me 20 minutes to do the bg.

Here we go (no, I'm not in a D&D group... these are just a few characters that I made.):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v462/fraethe/trio.png

From left to right:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v462/fraethe/Belran.png
Belran, the old, fun-loving wizard. He inlaid his staff with silver and made the amulet that he keeps around his neck. Very powerful, and with no familiar.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v462/fraethe/Adam.png
Adam- he had a little accident one day as he walked by a science lab in his home town. While the scientists inside were testing a new invention, they accidently sent him into an alternate universe. His weapon of choice is the crossbow, but he still has yet to find one. Belran accepted him into his home and gave him some training with the sword and magic.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v462/fraethe/Torin.png
Torin is a noble knight sent by the king of Deladën to destroy the evil sorceror Zyflar. Torin knows no magic, and makes up for it in strength of arm and steel.

Yeah, I'll prolly be switching every once in a while between Belran and Adam for my avatar.

Wow. Impressive.

I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, and I feel no need to learn much beyond PhotoShop, and the only real reason I have a custom avatar is that I was bored at work... in short, the picture sucks. :P

But in any case, if you look to your left, you will see my fire giant, Lord Korr. He's a character from my current campaign and is generally a total jerk. In his hand is a sword contemptuously referred to as the Cur's Blade--the bane of the Holy Knights of Sir Ander (a.k.a. the good guys).

http://perswww.kuleuven.ac.be/~u0044231/games/GR/AmberAvatar_117x117.gif
Amber
Elven Female Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster
Chaotic Neutral

Amber is the epitome of the arcane trickster. She loves money and valuables. While she sees the other party members as friends, she doesn't hesitate to pocket some of the money she finds while scouting as "hazard pay". And as long as nobody suffers from this, she'd rather lead a slightly more luxurious life.
Amber met the party just as they began searching for clues on the disappearance of Arendil's fiancée. The party was ambushed by a few bandits, and they were forced to work together. Because any place is good to make some money, and because she gets some "free" protection, Amber decided to stick with the group.

http://perswww.kuleuven.ac.be/~u0044231/games/GR/ArendilAvatar_117x117.gif
Arendil
Elven Male Sorceror
Neutral Good

A small "impurity" in Arendil's ancestral tree (his grandmother was a half-elf) leads to him growing facial hair. Though he was ashamed of it at first, he now proudly wears a beard to demonstrate his rather unique heritage.
Arendil's fiancée has been kidnapped while on a trading mission, and he is now searching for a trace of her with his old and new friends.

http://perswww.kuleuven.ac.be/~u0044231/games/GR/BordorAvatar_117x117.gif
Bordor
Dwarven Male Fighter/Dwarven Defender
Lawful Neutral

Bordor and Enaloindir are old friends, and met while working as slaves in a mine. Bordor managed to escape slavery, and now travels the world until he has erased the shame of slavery.
Bordor's favored weapon is a double hammer, which he wields with skill.
This sturdy dwarf joined the party after encountering his old friend Enaloindir while working as a caravan guard. Because his contract was fulfilled, Bordor offered his services to Arendil and his quest.

http://perswww.kuleuven.ac.be/~u0044231/games/GR/BrendAvatar_117x117.gif
Brend
Human Male Cleric of Kord
Chaotic Good

Brend was rescued from a bandit group by the party, on the day before he would have been sacrificed to the god of death. To repay his debt, he offered his services as warrior and healer.
Brend became a valued member of the group, skillfully wielding his greatsword, and decided to stay along to help Arendil.

http://perswww.kuleuven.ac.be/~u0044231/games/GR/EnaloindirAvatar_117x117.gif
Enaloindir
Human Male Barbarian/Ranger/Cleric of Habbakuk/Fighter/Rogue
Chaotic Good
(We play with fractional BAB and saves, and this is why this awful multi-class combination works. Okay, I might be a bit of a powergamer, but it's not like I'm dipping into Prestige Classes or anything...3.0 and 3.5 were supposed to be about multiclassing ;D)

Enaloindir was born as a slave, and worked in a mine his whole life. After the death of his father and mother, he deciced to risk an escape. He managed to get away on a foggy night, but was tracked down by some mine guards. Enaloindir managed to kill the three guard using the pick he had used for working the stone all those years. After the fight, Enaloindir was healed by Cirrion, a satyr druid, who taught him the basics of combat, and the ways of nature.
After recovering from his wounds and completing his training, Enaloindir set out into the world to search out slavers and end their evil ways.
Enaloindir met the party because he was tracking the kidnappers that attacked them. Because their paths seemed to lead in the same direction, Enaloindir became a member of the group.
Enaloindir wields a warhammer in battle, and uses his darkwood heavy shield, a gift from Cirrion, to protect him.

http://perswww.kuleuven.ac.be/~u0044231/games/GR/NyryanAvatar_117x117.gif
Nyryan
Half-Elf Female Ranger/Rogue
Neutral Good

Nyryan, Arendil and Lisa live together in the same village, and go back a long way. Because she was shocked by the fate of Arendil's fiancée, she offered to join him on his quest.
In combat, Nyryan mainly uses her archery skills, and has felled many foes using her trusted longbow. When needed, she is not afraid to step up and draw her sword.

http://perswww.kuleuven.ac.be/~u0044231/games/GR/LisaAvatar_117x117.gif
Lisa
Gnome Female Druid
True Neutral

Lisa is a close friend of Arendil, and that's why she is travelling with him in search of his fiancée. The goal of their quest is quite serious, but this doesn't prevent her from enjoying the nature and scenery they travel through.
Riding her wolf Pluisje, she is an opponent to be feared in battle. Combining animal ferocity with magic, Lisa has surprised many a foe who thought her to be a "minor nuisance".

Hehee... I finally got my good computer back from the shop. It's been in repair since Hurricane Ivan o_o Anyways, after seeing your characters Enaloindir, I was inspired to make more from some of my DnD games. This particular group comes from the characters in my brother's game, which has a wild west theme.
By the way, I love the one you have for Amber. Replace that bow with a short sword, and she looks *exactly* like Shar, one of the villains in a game I run ^_^
http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/gretchen.gif
Gretchen Marshall is my character in the game, a plain ol' cowgirl who focuses on distance sniping with her rifle. She has a troubled past, one which eventually drove her from the frontier towns to a wandering lifestyle, but I can't cover it here since it's still a secret from the other players. and they occasionally browse this board... Her eyes are usually either shaded by her hat or covered by her bangs, and she usually wears heavy boots, gloves, and a bandana to keep herself shielded from the rest of the world. She carries three guns with her: the revolver Priscilla, the rifle Becky, and the shotgun Sue, all named after important women in her life.
True Neutral Gunslinger 4

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/doclawrence.gif
Doc Lawrence is a jack of all trades: he acts as a healer, tactician, negotiator, craftsman, and is a bank of interesting knowledge. He is trained in medicine and alchemy, and although he isn't a cleric, he acts as the roup's healer and can usually handle most medical issues that crop up. He has knowledge in lots of obscure branches and is invaluable to the party for handling strange situations. His usefulness in combat is questionable, unless he has plenty of time in advance to rig up some explosives, then his Skill: Demolitions can come in very handy...
Neutral Good Expert 2 / Rogue 2

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/mae.gif
Mae Kerrigan is a sorceress who has ventured to the West in the hopes of discovering an unclaimed mana well. Like many prospectors, the chances of finding such a mana spring are unlikely, but the payoff if she does is massive: most of the new technology and powerful magic being discovered in this age requires mana to run. She splits her time equally between her magical and physical abilities, so in addition to casting spells, she's a mean shot with her pistol.
Lawful Good Sorceress 3 / Gunslinger 1

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/redwolf.gif
Red Wolf is a gnoll shaman who uses spirits for his magic powers. In this setting, gnoll tribes have no use for more than one shaman at a time, so Red Wolf is currently on a quest to find a tribe that needs him. He hasn't had any luck so far, and will most likely have to wait until another shaman dies so he can take his place. In the meantime, he travels the frontier hoping to improve his abilities and learn how gnoll society will coexist with the new races of humanoids invading their land.

Alrighty, finished a few more character drawings... These are from *another* game. Hehee ^_^;

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/Selene.gif
Selene is a half-nymph who is the party's fighter, despite having a great Charisma score and average Constitution. Half-nymphs aren't well suited for the fighter class, but Selene seems to make it work. She uses a greatsword, and also doesn't like metal armor much at all.
8th level Half-Nymph fighter, TN

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/Duonneg.gif
Duonneg Runneheim is my character in this game, a dwarven cleric of Moradin. Still, he's a bit of an outcast as a dwarf: he developed a severe case of claustrophobia following a tunnel collapse that left him trapped for days, totally unable to move... Since then, he despises the underground, and instead has taken up a profession as a sailor.
7th level Dwarven cleric, LG

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/Merin.gif
Merin Shwagmir is a crazy gnome sorceress. Although she realizes her actions have consequences, she rarely has the common sense to think things through all the way to their conclusion. She is easily excitable, hyper, curious, spontaneous, and prone to inventing crazy plans. Her voice is high pitched and she likes to punctuate her conversations by yelling one or two words every few sentences. The hat she wears is a hat of holding, don't ask me how it works, and on her staff she ties various shiny objects. Yes, her hair is in multiple different colors: she claims to have been born that way. Her familiar is a turtle, which she has named Turtle.
9th level Gnome sorceress, CG

http://www.students.uwf.edu/mfs10/Zoot.gif
Zoot is a crazy gnome necromancer: she and Merin get along very well, since they're almost identical in personality. Despite her practice in Necromancy, Zoot isn't evil. She's just a nice girl who happens to dress in black and has an unhealthy fascination with the dead.
7th level Gnome necromancer, CN

And while I'm here, I also finished an avatar for Templar, and redid Sara (Her player complained that I had *totally* screwed her up.)

(using the christmas version she graciously added).

http://students.uwf.edu/mfs10/Anyx.gif

Anyx Pethusher
halfling necromancer/monk (altough those are hobbies, he describes himself as a taxidermist)
He is accompanied by his female albino rat familiar, "Gangrene".

Anyx, saddened by the death of his first pet dealt with it in the only way he knew how : making him happy and forever a part of his life ... as a sock puppet (and incidently found his true calling).

Wether skinning werewolves for outdoor wear on the pretense of not knowing they were partially human
Or brandishing his "Wand of poking dead people" to make sure encountered corpses are, effectively dead (basically an empty wand of magic missile, which some high arcanists would call a stick) Anyx brings humour to a much misunderstood arcane practice.

Ever since his first adventuring action: inflicting a critical hit by kicking a skeleton in the knee, killing him. He knew he was destined for ...oddity

Thanks to Veera to have given life to this...err most peculiar character.

Now on to the puppet show to illustrate the concept of mortality to the village children.

Some of the main characters and NPCs from the original are still around though. How do you get the boards to use custom avatars?

pumpkinetics
2004-12-22, 06:03 PM
Simple. Just go to your profile page (up top), then where the selection of avatars is located, there is a small textbox. Place the name of your pic there and if all goes well, it should show up.

penguinscanfly81
2004-12-22, 10:18 PM
Basically, what Pumpkin said. Rich does not host images on this site, so you will need to have the image hosted somewhere on the internet. You can use sites such as photodump.com to host it if you need. Then you will need to get the URL that links directly to the picture. This can be done by right clicking on picture and selecting properties. The URL in the window that pops up is what you want to copy. From there open your profile and select 'I have my own Image'. Paste the URL into the text box, and you should be okay hopefully.

Remember that the image must be saved as a GIF or JPEG, and should be 117X117 pixels. If it is not that size it will be resized and it can mess up the picture sometimes.

Hopefully I described it right. Feel free to correct me, all those who are geekier than I.

Well, technically it's not "Smiters incorporated" since we can't actally agree on a party name.

Anyway, the members, in order of importance:

CALAIR:
members.optusnet.com.au/da_rat/pics/Calair.jpg
She's the leader of the group, and the expert tactitian. She's usually known for her nancing skills.Unlike normal druids, she's a circle-of-life type druid. Her parents constantly get in the way. A legolas fan.

Dire wolverine animal companion, TN

CHELETH:

Half-elf Sorceror11/Dragon disciple2, CG

NEIL:

The party paladin. An okay guy, and likes his god, he just... Doesn't get the "good and justice" thing right
He also practices alchemy, and for some reason, thinks that paladins can practice biological warfare
Gnome paladin13, "LG"

PIP:

The party's main healer, and also a big damage caster ever since his player got the book of exalted deeds (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndacc/880260000) He's rather picky, however about who he heals, even when all you did was accidentally stab him in the back.
Elven Cleric of pelor11/Contemplative2, NG

MARIA:
members.optusnet.com.au/da_rat/pics/Maria.jpg
My character, also known as the blademistress. She fights with two swords, is rather agile and impatient.Does stupid things alwayssometimes She bugs everyone with the fact that she once killed a vampire.
Human Fighter10/Tempest3, TN

MEYV(My-evv):
members.optusnet.com.au/da_rat/pics/Myev.jpg
The least trusted member of the party, yet the most pure of heart. Meyv has very few material posessions, but makes up for it with lightning-fast blows of deadly accuracy. She's also rather intelligent. Wierd, huh?
Half-orc Monk13, LG

SERAPHIMA:

See previous posts on the matter (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=comics;action=display;num=1090550324 ;start=105#105). You can't get them hosted on the site, you just have to link to the picture and location under profile. (Above) If all goes well, it should show up clearly.

Well. I've gone and tried my own hand at it. The lines aren't as thick as I'd like, but all I have is MS Paint to draw with, and IrfanView to resize and convert to JPG format. Still, IMO it came out reasonably well - fear the dual-wielding Cyclops Ranger:

........ and here's another one. All hail the mighty (?) Zombie Bard (Elan is pretty much proof, you apparently DON'T need to have an Intelligence score to be a bard! lol!). As a matter of fact, it is The Giant's own "eat, eat, eat the delicious sandwich" T-shirt that inspired it; in case it's not readable at the resolution you use, the Zombie is singing "Eat, eat, eat the tasty brains". ;D

Yeah, I've noticed that, myself; I'll have to get anotehr "eat" in there. Maybe tighten up the text so it doesn't look quite so cramped to either side, too. :)

How do you make them so much better than me?! ???

I'm just better than you?

Seriously? I really don't know. I think it's because I didn't try to MAKE them really good - they're stick figures, after all; how detailed and accurate can they GET?

A circle, part of a box, some curves for arms andhands, some lines for legs and feet. A face, usually consisting of some circles for eyes, and a simplistic mouth.

I just tried to follow the rule: "KISS" ("keep it simple, stupid!"), combined with "good enough for government work". If I tried to draw perfect figures, agonizing over every last detail ... they'd suck. If they ever got finished.

I also don't try to draw the whole figure at once. I draw the head, often sans face - them move it off to the side. I draw a box, nip th top off, then move it into position under the head (OOTS "stickies" don't have necks, how handy). Build a pair of arms, put 'em in position. If there're shoes instead of nekkid feet, draw one, then resize and mirror a copy. Move the body to it's final place, arrance the shoes below it draw in the legs (and feet, if there're no shoes). Assemble the face from seperately-drawn bits and pieces, moved onto the head seperately (the eyes go together, but the mouth is a seperate move). Save the whole thing. Start coloring. ^_^

And, probably the biggest trick is - I use MSPaint, but at 585x585. Thislets me draw in some fine details if I want, and not worry about perfection - a lot of detail is LOST when the image is shrunk down to 117x117. That shrinking also tends to cover up a LOT of sins, as well as smoothing out MSPaint's blocky-pixellated look. ^_^

Lastly, the same program that shrinks 'em, also converts to JPG.

Still - I'm no master ... it can take me an HOUR to make one of those. 8P And I've yet to try HATS, cloaks, or more-detailed clothing than a toga.

I most wholeheartedly agree!!

Took me 8 hours to figure out Adobe illustrator and all the intracacies etc.

As you can see in my Sean Connery/countdooku/Jedi mix together, you lose alot of detail on the shrinkage. Even so, i stuck to much in my picture so the small one is a little too busy, but man i love how it turned out in the larger version. So cool. Ive never been impressed with my own artwork before, but now i look at that and go "wow, i made that?...awesome!!"

Lastly, the same program that shrinks 'em, also converts to JPG.

No wonder, you use another program. The thing is, your lines are smooooth, and you did that in MS Paint. MS Paint doesn't do smooth.

With me, the problem is, I zoom in and make tiny edits too much. With an Adobe Photoshop line tool. Also, I made my avatar to "fit in" with any color background, which I thought was cool. It's not a white box with a person in it, it's a transparent box with a person in it. Orion's does that too, but... uh... LOOK BEHIND YOU! *Zoom!*

Pax

No wonder, you use another program. The thing is, your lines are smooooth, and you did that in MS Paint. MS Paint doesn't do smooth.

And the product of my efforts in MSPaint isn't smooth; it only APEARS smooth, because I reduce it to 1/25 it's original area (20% width and 20% height), using IrfanView. Conversion to JPG format also helps blur the pixellation a bit.

Here, look at the original-size Zombie BArd image (converted to JPG because apparently the OOTS board won't LET me link to the original bitmap, argh!):

http://members.ispwest.com/gmpax/oots/zombard_large.JPG

Now, the reduced-size version again:

http://members.ispwest.com/gmpax/oots/zombard.jpg

The big one clearly shows the typical MSPaint "ragged edge" pixelation; but, those are entirely hidden when theimage is reduced from 585x585 to 117x117. Basically, that's because the smaller image has only 4% as much area as the larger image, so there simply isn't enough resolution for the human eye to see the pixelation anymore.

;D So, just remember: draw it BIG, then make it get SMALL ... and a lot of low-end-program sins get covered up quite nicely. ;D

Shar's Marauders, the antiparty in my game. From left to right, there's Shar (Fighter), Melchor (Druid), Grug (Barbarian), Haengist (Ranger), Della (Rogue) and Della again (In one of her most common disguises, Elaine.)

http://students.uwf.edu/mfs10/cheechan.gif
Here is Chee-chan, an NPC Loremaster. This is a campaign specific Loremaster, not the version found in the DM's Guide. She has no magical abilities, nor any combat skills, nor social graces... But the party *still* had to bring her along with them on a few adventurers, since she was one of only a very few people that had the immense amount of ranks in Knowledge they needed to get through certain crypts and dungeons. And in addition to having to protect the rather haphazard scholar, they *also* had to protect the wagon full of books she insisted on bringing with her: she claims you never know when a book on the ritualistic dances of mountain goblin tribes could come in handy. In the entire time the party knew her, she only got into combat once: when their rooms were raided by a group of bandits, she managed to knock one of them out with a candlestick. ^_^

While we're at it, since I'm changing my personal avatar so much, here's all three of them that I've used so far. ^_^
http://students.uwf.edu/mfs10/stickvee1.gifhttp://students.uwf.edu/mfs10/veeraxmas.gifhttp://students.uwf.edu/mfs10/veeranewyears2.gif

And lastly, the Christmas card I printed out for my DnD group. The first image was on the front, while the second was on the back. I'll be linking to these, rather than posting them here: they're both large, and the second one is *vaguely* religious. Don't take offense please, it's poking fun at secular Christmas traditions rather than religion. ^_^ Even my Catholic friends thought it was funny.

Agreed that Water would be cooler as a standing wave. The drop does look nice, though.
The orange goo... I'd agree with you there. On a sunflower, too.
Suggest you add layers of dark red, red, orange and yellow, perhaps with a blue sheen somewhere near the bottom, and remove the yellow zig-zags.

Absolutely, totally off-topic, but...Veera, just noticed your sig comes from Ani DiFranco. My sister just introduced me to her--damn cool. Poetry set to music, along the lines of some of my favorite bands, like the Mountain Goats, the Weakerthans, and Soul Coughing.

And, just to bring it back on-topic, the stick-avatars you've made look great. If the Giant needs a back-up artist, you have my recommendation. (After this week of strips every day, we'll all be suffering massive withdrawal once we go back to two-per-week; maybe you could fill in on the off days and let us hopeless stick-addicts get our fix!)

(And, back off topic again, "stick-addict" is kind of a funny compound word. Stick Addicts might be a good name for a band.)

Hehee... I *love* Ani DiFranco, but the other bands you've mentioned don't really remind me of her style very much... When I think of Ani DiFranco, I usually lump her in with artists like Suzanne Vega, or Jill Sobule, or Aimee Mann. The Weakerthans are just kinda... Weird. Hehee. ^_^;

On-Topic: As fun as it is making these little stick figures, there is no way I could be even half as funny as Giant, even on a semi-regular basis. He brings the funny, and I just can't do that. :-) The occasional joke may pop into my head, usually inspired by something that happened in one of our sessions, but those are usually flukes.

I made my avatar in an archaic version of Corel Photo-Paint (which was packaged with Corel Draw 6).

Its based on my character Gorm FireHand from the NWN campaign I play in. He's a dwarf ranger (or, as he prefers: Caver). Dual wields a Hand Axe and Light Hammer.

Anyhow, I avoided pixelation by using the AntiAliasing feature on the Shape Drawing tool from said program. I think you could achieve the same effect using PaintShop Pro which is a share-ware paint program you can download on the net. Its a large program file though so might not be an option for anyone on dial-up Check C-Net or just Google Paintshop Pro.

So yeah ... There you go ...

The Weakerthans--WEIRD? Well...okay, I can see that. But then, the same comment could likely be made about all the bands I like (which should tell you something about the sorts of comments that could be made about me). And if your players are anything like my players, in-game comments should be enough to keep you in the funny for years to come...

Anyhoo--anti-aliasing seems to be a key component of creating non-pixelated avatars. For those of us too poor or too computer-illiterate to have access to anything more advanced than Microsoft Paint (*sob* it's true! it's all true!), what is the best advice? Is there anything that can be done within Paint to make avatars look sniftier, or is there a readily accessible (re: free, for us cheapskates) and easy to use program available for us non-l337 |-|4<|<3r5 (I'm so non-l337 I can barely read what I just wrote there) to get in on the OotS-style goodness?

Actually, my avatars are drawn in MS Paint. And saved as bitmaps, too. But they don't come outlokking pixellated, now, do they?

Here's how I draw them:

I draw them oversized - at 585x585, actually, which is exactly five times the height and width of the final product; once I'm done drawing an avatar in MS Paint, I save as a bitmap - and don't use MS Paint on that avatar ever again.
Once the oversized bitmap is saved, I open it with the free image-manipulation tool, "IrfanView" (google it, you can get it freely from the official website).
First thing I do is make the image smaller (goto {image}, then {resize/resample}; leave the default settings alone, go for the percentage option, and enter 20% - make sure "preserve aspect ration" is set to "yes"!
Save the result - whichis now precisely 117x117 - as a JPG.
Close Irfanview..
Open the smaller image - with a new sessionof Irfanview (it might not have been strictly neccessary to closeout irfanview, but IMO "better safe than sorry", and all ;D ).
Go to {image}, then {effects pallette}, then apply "sharpen" with a value of 20.
Save the file and close out irfanview - we're done MAKING it, now we need to show it off.
Fire up your favorite FTP client, and upload the avatar to your webspace of choice.
Come here and post it for all to see!

Simple, n'est-ce pas?

And that is utterly reprehensible and morally repugnant, because it's f***ing piracy, also known as theft. If it's worth having,it's worth paying for - and if you're unwilling or (laugh) "unable" to pay for the "good" programs, you either make do with the legally-free stuff like I do, or you suck it up and go without.

No problem, pleasure to have been of assistance.

One other owrd of advice: I don't bother trying to draw the figure as a single "piece" - instead, I'll draw it in PIECES, moving the pieces into position once eachis done. For example, a circle for the head. Move that aside, and draw a rectangle for the body ... snip off the very top, and move the rest into position under the head. Then the face, and move it onto the head. Then each arm and leg seperately, and so on. ;D

Worship Giant: I'm just a hack. ^_^
And I use Adobe Illustrator, GeeVee, which is the same program the Giant uses. It's a nifty little program, and I use it pretty often for designing business logos and various other small business items. The benefit to Adobe Illustrator is that since it uses vector graphics rather than raster graphics, you can shrink or expand an image in it to any size without any loss in quality. That's why it is used for logos, since you can create a logo for a business card and it'll look great, then blow it up to use on a company billboard, and it'll still look the same with no pixelization.
Making these little stick figures is a great way to keep in practice with it, and it's fun too!

Well, first off, I set my lines to 2 pt stroke. Then you should make your template... One male, and one female. The male one is easier, so you should start with that.

First off, select the circle tool (Hit the 'L' key) and set the colors. On the tools menu near the bottom are two colored boxes: the one on the right is the color of the outside line, while the one on the left shows the color of the inside. Make sure the outside line is black, and change the inside fill to a flesh color.

Go back to the circle tool and draw two more much smaller circles for eyes. Make sure the inside is black. Add a smile/frown/some sort of mouth too. :-)

For the body, use the rectangle tool ('M') and draw it, then send the body to the back of the drawing. To do this, click on the rectangle with the selection tool ('V') then hit 'Ctrl+Shift+[' or go to 'Objects > Arrange > Send to Back''

And now, use the Pen tool to draw the feet. This is the most difficult tool to use, but by far the most important. You'll have to practice for a while to get used to the Pen tool, but you'll use it to draw everything on your figure that *isn't* a circle or square.
I won't go into a lot about the Pen tool here, since it's mostly just trial and error. A couple tips below though.
Send the feet to the back of the figurine when you finish.
Set the 'Fill' color to none on the feet by clicking on the left colored rectangle, then clicking on the white box with a slash through it that's underneath that box.
You can use the Direct Selection Tool ('A') to select points and modify them after they've been drawn.

The rest you'll have to figure out on your own. ^_^

Hi guys & gals,

I'm a long time OOtS fan, and I caught sight of this thread, and couldn't help myself. I'd done a few random drawings, but nothing really that cool, but today I was inspired, reading all the threads, and I made myself in OOTS fashion. Hopefully, the image shows up on the left. All of you have done some really great work, I hope mine stacks up well with everyone else's. Well, as this is my first time posting, I really just wanted to say Hi to everyone, and that the creativity here is great.

Edit: Oh, I did my avatar in Paint Shop Pro 7. Since PSP 7 lets you do layers and vectors it makes life fairly easy.

I spent far too much time with Photoshop making my avatar, but I'm quite happy how it turned out. It's my current PC, Aerik the fire sorcerer. If I get really crazy, I may try to update it every so often as the campaign continues. (It's already out of date since he now has a staff that he'll be using more frequently than that rapier, and hopefully he'll soon find a way to dye that garish blue cloak to something more appropriate to his own paradigm, like red or black.)

I have a challenge/request for anyone who wants to try:

A lady with shoulder length orange hair (toned down from 5th element orange just a little) with her hand over her face and eyes closed in frustration. Running around at her feet are several little kids two girls: one with blonde hair, the other really skinny with brown hair; and one boy with brown hair and a gun going "bang! bang!" and wearing desert camo. Feel free to make the image as large as you want to fit most of this stuff in. I'll scale it down and all that jazz on my own.

Ok I understand that you have to go to something like Photoshop or something and I've gone there but there's nothing on the site that I can see that would let me draw. So once I go there what do I do next?

Tharivol
2005-02-13, 05:10 PM
Photoshop is the name of a program. You need to draw the avatar yourself (either on your computer, on paper than scan it in, or take a picture with a digital camera), then upload it to the internet. If you don't have access to those things (I don't) you can usually get a free trial of an art program that expires after so many days, which should give you more than enough time. As for uploading it, you need somewhere to store the files. I use a geocities account to store files, and there are other free sites where you can do it as well. Does that help?

I tried to use The Gimp to make an avatar.

Not very successful though - I have a small square transparent background. Unless I choose to make it a Shadow Dancer using HiPS, then I need a little more detail.

How do I add a circle and some lines please? I have no artistic skill whatsoever and have never used The Gimp for anything other than converting NWN screenshots from TGA to JPG.

If the answer doesn't occur to me spontaneously fairly soon, I may be tempted to RTFM >:(

Hello there, I have a suggestion for those who are having problems with making the stick avatars, try using a template such as this one:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/Fotomond/OOTStemplate.jpg
just make some changes, add the eyes and clothing (the eyes must be really close to each other and one must be a little bigger than the other) and try changing the position of the arms and the legs, oh and dont forget to add the color. I made this hobbit with the template, and I believe its looking kinda good:

I tried to use The Gimp to make an avatar [...] How do I add a circle and some lines please?

The in-house artist replies:

"You use the Ellipse Selection tool and hold down Shift to make a perfect circle. You then go to Edit and click Stroke Selection.

To make lines, you go to 'Create and edit paths' (the icon with the pen and the dots) and you click Polygonal. On your image, you create the path you want by clicking on points, then click Stroke Path. All these points will join into one path.

If you want to make a new, separate path, either hold down Shift as you click, or click on another icon before returning to put new points on the image (as long as you've already done Stroke Path for your first path).

To prevent white bits round the image, make it in three layers. Make the first layer opaque by clicking the Background radio button when you create the new file and make the two new layers clear (they will be clear when you add them) by going to Dialog -> Layers and clicking the New Layer icon (single sheet of paper) twice.

Put outlines on the top layer, using the Paint tool not the Pencil tool, because Paint is less pixelly. Do the colour on the middle layer. Once you've finished, throw out the opaque bottom layer, which was there to hide the checks of the GIMP easel (which, if you only use clear layers, can be distracting while you're working.)

To do this, go to Dialogs -> Layers, and drag the bottom layer into the bin.

Then go to Image -> Flatten Image, which will combine the two layers that remain."

Thank you for the compliment - my chest is bursting with joy :D

The chest and boots are actually filled with patterns, (paper boots, granite or amethyst chest) but what I did was that I fiddled with the checkboxes in the toolbox window until I got a setting where it stopped flooding the entire picture and settled with just filling out the bounded areas (made by shift-clicking while drawing lines)

Since I was unable to make curved lines (at least circles) at the moment I had to settle for using a really big pencil and make a single dot for the head ;D

And "alias"? I'm afraid you lost me - only Alias I know is from "Curse of the Azure Bonds" and that's only because adapting old adventures to 3ed is a cheap way of not doing as much work to keep a campaign going? What does Alias do - and isn't it "anti-Aliasing" that is the way to go (I have heard that word at least)

My guess would be size, format or its location does not let you link from it.

The latter is clearly not true as you have already posted a link to it.

What size is it and what format? Mine (which I have not tried to use yet) are 117 * 117 and are in GIF format, iirc ;)

Edit: They need to be GIF or JPG and will be resized to 117 x 117.

You also need to check the little box alongside the URL or your image. It worked for me.

Hmm.. it posted with just a quote.

And it will get slightly distorted when adapting to 117*117, but it might be too small to note since you are pretty close to that.

Well - I am a dumbo, so it can't be that.. must be that the drawing programs are so hard to use - 75% of the time goes to figure what I did wrong and trying to do something right and the rest is actual artistic problems.

Like the one where I finally managed to realise that if I have 117*117 pixels it is pretty stupid to draw the picture in just 80*80 and leave humongous empty areas around it.. ;D

Can you be a little more specific? I've never heard of the Roaming Gnome.

Fair enough, he has white hair and a big pointy red hat (think about the pointy wizard's hat, but bright red) he has pretty big eyes, and he has a maniacal grin (kinda like Belkar's)(http://www.giantitp.com/Images/BelkarButton.gif) He wears blue armor (its actually blue dragon hide) His two short swords glow red (for vampiric regeneration, its a 2nd ed. thing) and the other is yellow (sun blade). Also, it would be great if he could have boots kinda like Roy, and The Giant's avatar. Is that good enough?
