You'll prolly get more responses if you put this in the 'Arts and crafts' section. However, I think there might already be a thread on this there...

Many people use Adobe Illustrator, and there's also some that use a program called Inkscape. I've never used Inkscape, but I can reccomend Illustrator if you can get a cheap copy/trial version. :)

I think that the Arts and Crafts section is more appropriate for this.

And in the F.A.Q. it says Adobe Illustrator.

I use Adobe Illustrator, but other people use different things. Inkscape, Sodipodi...

There's a guide here. (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1115586717) Later in the thread it has tutorials for different programs.

Thanks for the move. :)
I'll see if I can get Illustrator. Paintshop Pro might work... I'll check it out.

You should try to do the avatar with vectorial drawing.
PaintShop Pro 8 allows you to use vectorial forms, and In kscape or Sodiprodi (both of them free, open source) do all in vectorial forms.

If you have a vectorial avatar, you can resize it without looking pixelated (blocky).

i have a mac, and was wondering if there's anything free on apple.com that i could use...i know appleworks is a good program, but it doesn't come as default with their new computers.

my question is: do i have to buy something for this, or can i download the software via apple.com or some other legit site?

Inkscape.org has a Mac OS X compatible version of Inkscape.

I've used to use Inkscape but if you don't have the money, or a way to get Illustrator I would suggest the Ink/GIMP method. If you choose to try Inkscape this (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1115586717;s tart=90#98) is very helpful.

You were quick :)

I will add that Gimp also has a OS X version : http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

So you can have the winner couple : Inkscape + Gimp,
all free, as usual :)

Edit : Inkscape says that it works with OS X. It says Mac OS X (Universal) , so I guess it works in all OS X. Look here : http://www.inkscape.org/download.php

What you might be seeing is a prompt for X11, the X Windows System. It's on 10.4's install disk, or available on the web.

Guess we're all in the same boat. :(
