View Full Version : Catchphrase for Elan

I am not sure if this has been brought up before or not, but apparently (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0390.html) a catchphrase can be used in place of a pun. While it would appear that an individual pun can only be used once, from what I understand of the second panel here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0438.html). However a catchphrase should be able to be used more then once, otherwise it would not be a catchphrase.

Anyway, if I am right about this, Elan should get his own catchphrase so he doesn't have to think up of a new pun every time.

So what catchphrases do you guys think Elan should have? "For Banjo!" is the only one I can really think of myself right now.

"Wait, what?" would probably be a good one for Elan. He certainly seems to say it often enough.

Well, a catchphrase does have limited use, as well - it can't just be said over and over. It fits best as a once-per-encounter usage, or else he'll start suffering from catchphrase interruptus as every other character keeps interrupting him just to keep him from saying it again.

That's what I thought of when I read the name of this thread.

He should get a really long and witty catch phrase....

and then forget it.

I have two ideas:
:elan:"Madness? This is BANJO!" or for those of you that are tired of this overused 300 reference:
:elan:Stab, Stab, Stab, Stab the monster's torso.

Well, ignorance is listed as his class power source.

Somebody's been reading up on their "broken rules" books.

What you forget is the case in which the players are fighting someone who is an underling to some other creature. If the creature is neutral to you, it will still try to kill you. If it likes you, it will ask you to join it. If you say no, it will kill you.

Plus, you assume that you speak their language. It's hard to work diplomacy when you can't speak to them. And, if you neglected to take "Speak Language", which feels foolish to me in the first place, when coupled with most bard's low INT, due to mostly uselessness, means you wouldn't be able to do anything anyway. And if you do speak a language of some enemies? Your DM throws an enemy at you that doesn't speak that.

Or, at least, that's how I (and my DM) Circumvent such cheese.

What are you talking about? I usually give my bards a decent int to make sure they can get the skills I want them to get.

Most Bards aren't Elan.

I haven't read WaX, but considering Elan's writing the preface (or was it the introduction?) I'm pretty sure I get it anyways

Or like the line from the bootleg director's cut of Army of Darkness:

Whut 'chu talkin' about, Theodoriph? :smallyuk:

Yeah, a single catchphrase can become amazingly annoying. Elan needs one, but only use it once out of every ten encounters, at most, and use puns and other jokes to fill in the rest.

well, i recall Elan saying the word "blah" 497 times in a row just to make a new world records, so i could fit as his catchphrase

Um... Bards are supposed to have high CHA, INT, and DEX. They are skillmonkeys. Therefore, they need INT.

Yes. Int is a very good thing for a bard to have.

Guess which bard missed that tip in bardic summer camp?

Yes, yes. We all know that about Elan. Both me and Tired N' Drowzy were responding to the statement that most bards use int as a dumb stat. Elan is the only bard I know of that actually does that.

Since MitD has "Wait, what gate?", "Wait, what?" is too similar
