Actually it was Colt, not Chase who asked about the Thinker avatar. Understandable mistake, they're both using the same avatar at the moment. ;) All the more reason to spread the customness...

Anyway, I did that one as a joke really, but I suppose I should wait and see if it satisfies the original request first. If not, you're welcome to use it. :) And if you wanted it for anything other than an avatar on these boards (and why would you trade a Veeratar for that?), you can take it now!

Erm... eheh. Well Gamebird, I can honestly say I tried now. I'm not familiar with roosters, fighting or no, though, so bear with me.

http://www.thecowscorner.com/~losarian/rooster.gif

Also, I'm not sure what you meant by a gaff. Are you talking about the hook at the end of a pole that's used to land large fish? With some clarification I can go back in and add it, if neccesary.

Gamebird

;D

Hey, that's pretty good! It made me smile real big, and that's half the battle.

If you'll look at the avatar I have now, you'll see that it has something on the legs that look like hooks. Those are gaffs. What you do with a fighting rooster is saw off the spur so it's only about half an inch long (the spur is mostly a horn-like growth). Then you tie weapons onto the bird's legs to replace the natural spurs. When the weapons are curved spikes, they're called gaffs. When they have a blade, they're called knives (short or long). When using knives, they usually only use one, leaving the other leg bare.

I would say at least give the avatar something sharp and spikey on the legs, even if it's just a little triangle-thingy.

I think it looks great for someone who has no familiarity with roosters, fighting or not.

Am I at liberty to use that avatar? And how far afield can I use it (just on GitP, or anywhere I want)? Does this mean I'm off Veera's queue (because I'd be interested to see what she comes up with - I was surprised she didn't turn me down, what with the weird, non-human request)?

WoW!!! Thats awsome!! Much better then I expected!! Thats sweet!! Thanks Gorbash Kazdar!!
Yeah, it's pretty darned awesome. One thing, though, bloodred" it's probably best if you save the image to your own computer, and then upload it to your own webspace. Especially since the space Gorbash-sama has it on is a *.edu domain, meaning, it's chool space and not guaranteed to be there and available forever. (plus it's a sort of etiquette thing - using yoru own bandwidth instead of someone elses, and all).

The_Losar

Alright, the image was altered, sorta, to add what I guess looks like gaffs? Still open to alterations, though.

And yeah, when I make stuff for people, avatars or anything, it belongs to who I gave it to. You can do what you want with it, and I don't even require you to mention me as the artist or anything. I know I made it and that's all that matters. =D

Alrighty, sorry about the long break there. It's been rough the past couple weeks, and I've been working too much on getting my own DnD game set up rather than avatars: my players have to come first! Otherwise, they don't ante up the pizza money... ¬_¬
Alec, Glyphstone, here you go. Glyph, I had to take quite a few liberties with the stone golem. I simply couldn't do the armor you wanted and keep it in the OotS style: the Giant does armor simply with colored blocks, so if I *did* give your Golem the armor you wanted... You'd have a lavender golem.

I was wondering if anyone could come up with an avatar of the sax player from the Nightmare Before Christmas. Just run an image search. If that is too complex, a back-up request is Jack Skellington. Please note: This is a specific request for a NON-Veeratar. I do not want to clog up Veera's busy schedule with this.

Uuuuhhhhh. . . Webspace??

Yeah. Webspace. As in, web-accessible file storage space.

Let's put it this way - right-click on my Avatar, and select "properties" from the little menu that should pop up. You will notice that one of hte pieces of information you then get is labelled "Location". Notice the URL, there - http://members.ispwest.com/gmpax/oots/pixie.jpg ...?

That's my web space (well, one of two locations, actually) ... specifically, the space that comes with my ISP contract. However, it won't be my webspace for a long time to come; I'm already planning, in teh next 6-8 months, on a move to DSL (if finances hadn't changed, I'd be on DSL right now, in fact). What if a miracle had occurred, and you'd liked mine better than Gorbash's? If you didn't save it and put it on your own space, then the avatar would DISAPPEAR when I changed over to DSL.

And on another front entirely ... luckily for me, I don't pay for bandwidth - there. But for my other web space, I do pay for that (5GB/month for free, $1 per 1GB/month after that).

So it's just a matter of practicality (your webspace will generally be around as long as you are, and if it does change, you can just change the URL used for your avatar in your Profile here), and a matter of courtesy (as the added amount fo bandwidth incurred by hosting an image, even if it's likely to be minor, might end up costing someone some money).

Do a Google for "free web hosting", and you shoddl find someplace that'll let you put that avatar up in a place YOU control. ^_^

Obviously I understand the concept of the URL of the image, or I wouldent have been able to get it to work in the first place.
Hmm I have an ideal. . .

Edit: I tired pasteing the image into my Live Journal, however it still had the same URL, GAH!!! I dot get it, and dont want to pay just for a Custum(sp) Avatar.

Bloodred: Try http://www.photobucket.com/ . They host images for you for free.

Um, question anyone, how can you keep the size of the image 117 by 117 without stretching the character that you drew? AI automatically crops it, and if I change the image size, the character itself gets bigger or smaller. Help?

I personally start with a canvas that is 117x117, then I don't have to worry about stretching or resizing at all.

I personally start with a canvas that is 117x117, then I don't have to worry about stretching or resizing at all.

That's what I do, when I create a new picture I make it 117 by 177, it makes a box that size, but when I say Save to Web it crops the image to a square that has all the space I use. Then when I try to go to image size, first of all it doesn't let me do 117 by 117 unless I uncheck the constraints box, which stretches it, and otherwise when I make it bigger it makes the thing I drew bigger, not just the canvas. I don't know any way to get past this, that's why some of my avatars have little flame thingies around the edges, so it makes the canvas about the right size and the image stays the same. If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it.

EDIT: Here, I figured it out, but there has to be an easier way. I just opened it up in Gimp and resized the canvas. This was VERY STRONGLY inspired by Veera's avatar for Alec, but I didn't recycle anything from the monkey, it just looks like it. All I did was use the same colors, I think. Pirate and ninja-ish version.

http://img13.echo.cx/img13/4476/monkey339ji.gifhttp://img13.echo.cx/img13/2126/piratemonkey7ub.gif

EDIT 2: Actually, Gimp didn't fix my problem, when I tried to use it as an avatar it got all blurry, >:(

Thanks, and no I don't mind, but the canvas might need to be resized a little first. You can try to use it now if you want, and I'll try to fix it if it works I'll PM it to you. Also it will mean there will be 2 monkeys running around the board, you and Alec, plus I might use one of my monkeys as an avatar too. And thanks again, I think I'm getting better too, but for this one it was easier, I had Veera's example to look at ;)

The_Losar
2005-05-14, 12:29 AM
TO get the images at the size I want I usually just make a circle with a clear border and a white (or any color, really) fill and shrink it until the fill can't be seen. That way you confuse the program into thinking that there's color there! Using two of those in opposite corners pretty much solves your sizing problem.

I don't know if there's an easier way to do it.

Drizzt_Fanboy_74

Irfanview is what I use. I can make the drawings as large as I want them, then shrink them down. It also changes file types. Pretty useful tool, and it is free and fast to download (on a cable modem, about 8-10 seconds).

I also plan to dowload the .gif onto my computer and host it on my site later today, but I need to use a different computer, I'll tell you when I finished doing that so then you can take if off your site if you have bandwith problems, I'll be doing that later today though so don't get rid of it just yet.

No problem, Bloodred. Enjoyed making it :)

In any case, for the sake of making this thread a bit easier to load, I'm pulling down the post of the avatars I made and putting up a link to a page with all them instead.

Balrogossah: you have to make it on a program like Adobe Illustrator, or lots of other things, but it has to be a program that uses transparency (I think Gimp can do it too, Gimp is free). You can also open the image after to edit out the white, but it's harder and more complicated. You can download a free trial of Adobe Illustrator, that's what I made my monkey and other avatars with.

If you use imageshack, a list of links should come up, copy the one that says Direct Link to Image. Go to your Profile page, and check the I Have My Own Avatar box, then paste the URL. BTW, I like your avatar Mick!

And Balrogossah, cool pics, like I said download AI.

Yeah, I know, and AI takes some getting used to, but your drawings look good, especially for something like Paint, and I was sure you could make awesome pics in AI, but, suit yourself, just a suggestion. It just bothers me that the image quality is poor, like Appleworks isn't great either.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/Superblah74/JackSkellingtonGIF.gif

I can't post it with a transparent background, because the head is white, and white is the transparent color I usually use. Else, we'd have a beige colored Jack on some posts, and no one wants that. ;) Critique is encouraged. C'mon, tell me what ya think!

If it is too big, please PM me mods!

Wow, looks awesome, not sure how it'll look when it's resized though. You should probably just use a sightly darker version of white for the head then, but I don't know I don't use Sodipodi (or whatever you use). In AI there are two separate colors, transparent and white. So yeah, just use a different shade of white so you can make it transparent, but other than that, nothing...so...

Great work!

Drizzt_Fanboy_74
2005-05-18, 09:19 PM
I had been planning to darken the head by a tiny bit. Glad you like!

Edit: ANd yes, I do use Sodipodi. I did a couple really crappy things with AI, which is MUCH harder to use. Besides, I didn't have to shell out $900 to get this program indefinitely.

Okay I have a request to make. As a poster and as a mod.

If you want to keep this exact thread around for a while, please, PLEASE, hot link your images. If you don't, I'll lock this one and let Veera make a new one.

This thing has turned into a behemouth monster. It's the tarrasque of load times. Even on a cable modem.

And whoever uses my.photosleeve.com, your picture isn't loading. And I can't figure it out on my own because I don't see anything that's half an image.

Veera
2005-05-19, 01:35 AM
I myself think it'd be best just to make a new thread. It doesn't slow things down on my modem at all as is, but it *is* getting to be a pain finding the stuff I need to find. And I'll make a webpage showing the avatars I've made, rather than hosting them here, no matter what. ^_^

But if y'all would rather keep this thread, I can live with that too.

Hey folks. Veera, The_Losar, and I have been conspiring to take over the world pool our resources to tackle the avatar requests, given how many Veera gets. This lightens the load for her, and speeds up production, so its a good thing all around. Plus, it limits the number of smug swordsmen any one person has to do.

So, basically, if you have a request, we'll add it to a group queue and whoever is available when it hits the top will tackle it. If you want someone in particular to do the avatar, just state that in your post :)

Vorpal Tribble, Balrogossah, Uthmah, Beelzebub, and JWolfe, do you have specific artists in mind, or is it okay for us just to throw you into the group queue?

[And thank goodness I don't have 1337 posts anymore. That was just disconcerting. :P]

Sorry, I thought someone might feel like that. But can I still use the monkey? I had fun making it into a devil, into Neo, into a jedi ninja pirate (!?), a pirate, a thief, etc...it's just fun to experiment. If you don't want me to keep using the monkey, I'm sure I can think of something else.

(heehee about the 1337 posts, that's pretty funny)

Okay, I'm breaking down and asking for a cool avatar of my own. I have such a crush on Gorbash's new Han one, I can't stand it :-). I want an avatar that is reminscient of this one, in that it is goth looking with very pale skin and black hair, and a sarcastic look on her face. It doesn't have to be smiling or smirking, smug will work, too. Just "I'm better than all you normals" will be good.

I want her to look like a cross between Robert Smith of The Cure (www.thecure.com) and Lydia from Beetlejuice (the movie). Big crazy hair, however you want it, long flowing robes OR dress and boots, pale skin. This character was a psionicist, specializing in telepathy, so if you want to give her any psi-looking waves coming out of her head or hand, that's cool but unnecessary. Possibly holding her head, like she's pushing someone to jump off a cliff? Honestly, I'm not picky, these are just suggestions. I just want someone that's gothic looking but NOT NecroGirl. Red or purple or white accessories are all acceptable. Spiderweb design on the robe is also acceptable. NOT mandatory.

Have fun with her. I'd prefer, honestly, Gorby to tackle it, but Veera or The Losar are great, too, so if that's a problem, put her in the queue and I'll take whatever I get.

Do I need to PM this as well?

Thanks thanks thanks.

Hrmmmm....kinda small...I'll fix that.

Edit: Fixed as best I can...oh ****!! I forgot the horns!!! Gimme a little time and it'll be all set.

Again, Edit: I added the horns and I think it's a bit bigger. Width added by the lightsaber caused me to have to pad it, and when resized it is smaller. If you want, I can make it even bigger by cutting out the saber (or at least the blade).

I once had a character(NPC villian actually) named Darth Gnomus
(Thats Gnome-uhs)

He was an evil gnome warlock. His eldritch blast was like the blue lightning of the Sith. I always imagined him as someone like the Emporer, but a Vader-stle, or even Maul-style would be cool.

Could this be possible, either with the red light saber, or the blue lightning would be the coolest thing ever.

If I make an avatar for someone, they can use it in places other than these boards. However, please don't use an avatar I made for someone else without permission from the person I made it for. In my case, I won't use an avatar I made for someone else except for putting it up as an example of my work.
