The old thread got to be too long for people with slow modems, so here's a new one.

But first one request. Could this thread be kept OotS related? OotS style avatars, and fan art based on OotS, but not character sketches and random art from other things.

The last thread lasted for less than a month.

Okay. For samples, I don't have a website or anything, but I do requests for people. I made my own avatar, and the avatars for many others on these boards, though most of those were through PMs.

If you request something from me, these are the requirements/rules.

Anyone can get an avatar. Anyone, unless there is a specific reason for me to not give them one.
If your request is very complicated, I may complete someone else's before yours. However, I will hopefully get yours done very quickly.

Please include the following things in your request. Things with Xs next to them are not required, but would be helpful.

Just PM me with your avatar's description (please include gender, race, hair style/color, equipment, and pose/magic. If you don't include it, neither will I) and I'll try to get it done within a day and can pretty much guarantee within a week.

Examples are in the website in my sig.

You're free to edit or use them where and when you please, though I'm fine with making small changes after it's done.

I'm wondering whether I was responsible for either Salsar's dual-wielding worddaggers or Sneak's elite haxor blade with my Lol Archer wielding LOL arrows.

No, I don't think so, but you should ask SalSar. I remember seeing in some thread a request from him that said that the swords would have the words stabbity death on them, and Peregrine just chose to do it in that style. Mine is kind of a ripoff, but I liked the idea of the Simu-Ninja having blades that had names, like Spam, Simu-Post, 1337, etc., and I couldn't think of any way to show that the swords were named in the avatar besides that way. I also thought of putting the words on top of actual blades, too...

Then King of Durf suggested that I do an "31i73 h4xor" blade, so I did. And I liked it.

And Pop Goes the Banjulhu, those are cool!

I do characters in order that they were requested, guys, although I might make an exception if it's something simple (as Veera's was.) Veera and I traded. And that's the reason I have Veeratars when she's retired, so will you people PLEASE stop asking.

Man, that game is so fun...I'm addicted! And it's also cool when you die, although it is very bloody. But it's not really gorey, it's just a stick figure.

If Rich asks us not to draw fan art using his characters, I'll take it down, but so far he's only insisted that people not alter his work, and I drew that myself from scratch.

As a guest comic art for the Giant, I don't see why he would object- if you started doing a series using his characgters though, that would be an actual copyright violation... as would copy-pasting instead of originally creating.

It might be a derivative work- but Rick's characters are, like Chewbacca, not in the public domain- whatever Peregrine did that was in his own style (with changes)- like the plot, and the slightly different representation of Durkon and Rich, could be consdiered 'Peregrines' work' as could his base models- however the characters are copyrighted to Rich- use of the characters would only be allowed contingent on Rich's Okay- as fan art though, I see no reason why Rich would object.

The elf looks distinctly female, because of the curvature. What you'd want to do to fix this would be to draw a straight line from the edge of the widest part of the chest to the outermost hips, and give the elf wide hips for a male and narrow hips for a female.

Well, I certainly like it. The little details, I put down to style. (I mean, if Elan is male, and in your manga-esque style he is, then Vaarsuvius definitely has male features.) They're all identifiable, and the only one I can say doesn't look right to me is Belkar, not V. It's probably because Rich's halflings are quite stocky (a side effect of basically being full-sized people cut in half ;)).

Okay, guys, I'll commission one each for those of you who are bored:

Annex: I think Erin requires an intensity that you show.

I know you won't need all these details, but I'll give them anyway.

Erin, female human. Long black hair, straight. Blue eyes. Extremely beautiful and highly fit. Carries two glock 17s, has a broadsword on her back. You have your choice of outfits to draw for her: 1) chainmail head to toe or 2)blue jeans, combat boots, and a black tanktop. Also, strapped to her leg is a plain polished brown wooden stick, about as long as her thigh. That's the most important thing, to have Stick on her person, if you leave out any detail at all, don't leave him out. If you have to, she can be carrying him (yes him, yes, his name is Stick) instead of the guns in her hands. The weapons can be left off if you need to. She's basically a paladin type, very emotionally charged character, and she's usually got that "come mess with me, I dare ya" look.

Sneak, you get your pick, these one seems more your type:

Farina Loudhammer, dwarven female. Red curly hair that's usually in braids. She wears full mithral platemail. A plain helm, no horns!!!! Her primary weapons are two battle axes, each with a blade on one end, a back spike and a top spike. She's very curvy, but you probably can't tell because of the platemail. Known as the "Cuisinart". Kind of Mama-bear personality, very nice and sweet, takes care of her own, but you don't want to make her mad or mess with her family.

Bofala Glutterstarfinkel, female gnome illusionist. She has white hair, kind of "Albert Einstein" looking. She's fairly tan. She wears a seven layered skirt, each a bright color. She has a squirrel familiar. Friendly, always wearing a big smile and ready to help! Very smart, kind of absentminded. Probably creating some fireworks or other cantrip to amuse herself.

Not bad, though you have the same problem that I did. If you just use the base as the background, you will get a fuzzy background. So, put the image on top of a block of pure white.

I've made a couple of animated GIFs using the GIMP (one's in my gallery). The trick is to make each frame a layer, then name them as follows:

<some name for the frame> (delay) (frame disposal)

Delay is given as a number of milliseconds. Frame disposal is either replace (the next frame overwrites the last one entirely) or combine (each frame is painted onto the last one, so transparent areas show the old image).

Thus you might have five layers...
BaseImage (1000ms) (replace)
NextFrame (1000ms) (replace)
Frame3 (1000ms) (replace)
Frame4 (1000ms) (replace)
LastFrame (2000ms) (replace)

Note that you don't have to include these instructions; when you go to Save As... a GIF, once you specify that you want an animation rather than merged layers, it will ask you for a default delay and disposal method where unspecified, so if all your frames use the same values, you can just set them there.

Also make use of the Optimize (for GIF) and Playback options under Filters -> Animation, to shrink and preview your animation, before saving.

Oh, and what colours do people use for the skin? I always seem to pick ones which are too grey, or too pink.

And about the skin color, I usually use a lighter version of Bisque, or just Bisque if they're tan. If they're pale or have pinkish skin, I just use the sliders on Bisque, so that's pretty much my starting skin color for everything, except for drow skin and stuff like that. But to me, that skin color on the monopoly fellow looks fine.

No, I don't think I could do that, because I use Adobe Illustrator, and it wouldn't work in that. I could only do it if I had the .ai file of the avatar, and you didn't make it in AI. But if you made a few other pictures with the control and/or the hand and made them move position every time, then I could do it. Sorry.

And if anyone was wondering, no it does not represent who I am in real life. In fact it's quite different from who I am in real life. There are some similarities but mostly it just looks cool so that's why I'm using it.

I don't think I could make an accurate representation of myself if I tried. And yes, I have tried. I've also done one for other people, one which was okay/pretty successful, the other which didn't look like that person at all.

JPEG the answer to everything? Umm... no. JPEG is designed for photos. (The P stands for 'photographic'.) JPEG is a lossy image compression format designed for images with lots of colour gradients. It performs badly and produces lots of distortion on images with sharp outlines and solid colours.

Stick figures, in other words. :P

So, if you're compressing photos, use JPEG. If you're compressing something like Wukei's black-and-white drawings (which I assume are scanned), you could probably go either way. If you're compressing stick figures, icons, or basically anything derived from vector drawing programs, use PNG or GIF.

(PNG is also useful for other things, like archival-quality photo compression, but let's not go into that. :))

Well I'm a lurker here on the boards, but read the comic since the earlier comics. (Posting isn't my thing ::) ) Any who, I always wanted to know how much time, patience, and skill it takes to make all these little stick figures so today I decided to make my own stick figure.

It took me like 4 hours just to do this picture and by doing this I have to give Rich credit on making such an excellent comic. I mean these little things are hard to do! Sorry for it being a little big. I tried shrinking it on Illustrator, but if I tried any smaller it lost alot of quality for some reason.

Well basically I would like to know some critique from you all so I can have an idea on how to make my pictures better. Hope you like it!

In my example, replace the { with [

But in yours, cuz you use imageshack, it's a bit more complicated. When you go to view your picture, do you see how you see more than the picture? There's a link below it that says "get links." Click on that. On the new page that opened, scroll down and look for the "direct link" to the image that looks like this: http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4905/avatar8hp.jpg

Do you see how in mine it doesn't have "?image=avatar" ? That's how I know it's a good link. And now, using my code above but replacing the URL with the new one I get this:

Actually I used a program called PrintShop, it basically came with the computer. I was sending some fan art to Wukei's comic, Life for Death (theres my shameless plug), and found that it also had this nifty little drawing program, so woo for my first (albeit pathetic) attempt at an avatar.

Well...My friend made a deal with me if I made an awesome stick figure of her she'd give me an awesome birthday gift, but it took me like all night to make it and she's not on anymore. ::)

Yeah that does seem to be a problem...My thought was when I do make a smaller one I should maybe use thicker lines? Another thouht was that I didn't put as much effort on my smaller one. Reason being that I just wanted to rush so I can see if it could fit as an avatar instead of being...big lol. ::)

Well I guess I'll try a smaller one later today or maybe two...just to see if I can improve the quality of them!
