I don't know anything about the system for the forums here and if this is even possible (though I assume so based on the OotS smilies), but how difficult would it be to add the 4E attack icons and recharge dice symbols to the list of smilies available here? (For instance, :meleebasic: would yield the sword inside a circle, :close: the Close Attack symbol, :recharge6: a die with the 6 showing, and stuff like that.)

I know at least one place (ENWorld (http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4172347&postcount=1)) already has them and it works out well (I guess - I haven't seen a problem with them, but I don't hang out there much), so I thought I'd at least ask and see if it could work and if others liked the idea.

The forums here don't need to implement that, all you have to do is group together your target smilies, right click and select properties, and then copy down the location into a word processor and just copy-paste the necessary link in [IMG] brackets. Problem solved.

You could make a bunch of your own tokens and host them on imageshack and them when you needed them. This would solve the problem quickly without changing the board software.

Alternatively, if there is no copy right problems, you could just find the url of the image of the tokens on another site and use [IMG] or [IMG]http://www.giantitp.com/forums/images/editor/insertimage.gif to post it where you need it. [Note: make sure you know it is ok to use their image so that you do not run in to any copy right problems.]

Hotlinking is an issue entirely separate from copyright.

Copyright: "I own this image and all depictions thereof. You cannot use this image in any way without my permission.

Hotlinking: "This is a public domain image, so you can use it, but host it yourself. I'm not letting you use any of my server resources.

In any case, this will run into the "If I do that for this game, that'll be precedent and I'll have to do it for pretty much every game" scenario. This is a situation the administrators do their best to avoid and is why they never implement features aimed at specific game systems.

Why not just establish a convention to represent them using a combination of existing ASCII characters (either normal or extended character set)?

You could have Q or φ (alt+237) for :meleebasic:
╬ (alt+206) for :close:
and something simple like Rchg5+ for :recharge5-6:

It would just be a case of popularising them on the board then.

Though I don't really care to see the boards implement the different 4e attack icons, it would be cool to have the little d6 icons?

Mad Irishman has a font with them (and the other icons) available here (http://www.mad-irishman.net/font_gameicons.html).

Edit: Note that the little starburst thing used in power descriptions can be found (or at least one that looks virtually identical) in Wingdings.
