Short and to the point:

If some flumphs can be paladins, what sort of mounts would they get and how would they ride them? :smalleek:

Bonus points if you use diagrams where appropriate!

I'd take Smiting Charge from PHB2.... Sorry. That was a serious answer. ;)

Paladins... actually RIDE their mounts? That's a weird idea.

But: flumphs existed before most critters could take class levels (iirc they didn't exist after 1e), so technically they can't be paladins.

That said, let's assume they're updated for some gosforsaken reason. Tongue firmly in cheek, I'd recommend a roc as a mount, to be "ridden" via the roc's claws. Since the flumph has a nest of tentacles, not all its limbs would be pinned by the claws. That way, actions are fully usable.

I know Flumphs have been updated to at least 3.x, but it wasn't in a WotC supplement. I think they were in Necromancer Games' Tome of Horrors.

I'd agree with 1of3 - if I were a Lawful Good floating tentacle thing with eyestalks I'd probably rather Charging Smite something than try to figure out what I could ride.

What is a Flumph?

They ride Gelatinous Cubes. No joke (go look on page 85 of the Arms & Equipments Guide if you don't believe me).

What is a Flumph?

Those white jellyfish monsters people keep falling on.

What is a Flumph?

The white tentacle thingies that always end up as cushions for falling OotS characters (first appear in 346 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0055.html).)

If like cures like, Tentacles must cure Tentacles. Or like tentacles. Or whatever.

A flumphs therefor must ride...

A carrion crawler!

Or, if it's an undersea campaign, A Giant Octopus!

I was originally being at least a little serious with the gelly cube idea =P As soon as I found out it was possible, I knew I had to give some bizzare magocracy a "cavalry" made of Gelatinous-Cube-Riders. And who will be riding (probably not flumphs, sadly enough)? Only time will tell.

Other suggestions (all three also statted out in AEG, awesomely enough):

Owlbear
Rust Monster

...or along the lines of the above post...

Tendriculos?!?!?!

What is that unhallowed disembodied smile lurking in the bottom-right corner of your image? Does the roc-riding flumph paladin have an Invisible Stalker cohort? :smallconfused:

Pedantic note: actually, they first appear all the way back in #55 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0055.html). They first serve as landing pads in #74 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0074.html).

Interestingly, the comic originally linked to was, in fact, number 55. Check the URL, or just look at the comic itself.

The flumph has already been updated to 3.0 (http://www.enworld.org/cc/converted/index.php) (and it doesn't look like anything needs to be further updated to be 3.5 compatible). It doesn't have an LA so it really should be character-classible, but it's apparently "always lawful good" (???) so if you boost its mental stats and slap an LA on it you may as well have one as a paladin.

Edited: mental stats are actually good. Nice WIS.

Although I love the roc picture, I would second a gelatinous cube.

Alternately, a celestial ogre. =)

Yeah, I started out just saying that they appear in 346 and then remembered where the first appearance was. I changed the link and added "first," but forgot the number.

...It's been a long day. :smalltongue:

It doesn't have an LA so it really should be character-classible,Note that there's a difference between "doesn't have an LA" and "LA 0". That was from 3.0, which didn't have the concept of LA yet (at least, not originally). Updating it to 3.5, the flumph would probably be given LA -- (meaning it's not suitable as a PC) due to the lack of hands.

If we ignore that, it's got +6 dex and +4 wis with no stat penalties, a fly speed, and a couple of special attacks. The two aberration RHD help to ameliorate that somewhat, but probably not completely, so you'd still probably have an LA of 1 or 2.

They were officially updated to 3.5 in Dungeon #118 in the adventure "Box of Flumph." Their favored class is the Paladin.

So this thread is very relevant, but not very timely.

And considering that a) it wasn't core and thus cannot be printed under the OGL, and b) I can't find my issue of Dungeon #118, I can't print the 3.5 Flumph for reference. :smallsigh:

As a wise man once said:
Bow chikka wow wow.

And as another wise man said:
"That's just not right."
But the second guy said it in latin, so it soundeed fancier.
