Does it count as self-abuse if I inflict them on myself, first?

Inspirational Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbeQpeX8QtY)

Standing in the rain, with his head hung low
Couldnt get a copy, it was a sold out sto'
Heard the roar of the game, he could picture the scene
Put his eyes to the glass, then like a distant scream

He heard one combat, just blew him away
He saw games in his mind, and the very next day
Bought a beat up dee ten in a secondhand store
Didnt know how to play, but he knew for sure

That one combat, seemed good in his head
Didnt take long, to understand
Just one dee ten, swung way down low
Was a one way ticket, only one way to go

So he started gamin'
Aint never gonna stop
Gotta keep on gamin'
Someday hes gonna make it to the top

And be a WHITE BOX HERO, got orcs on his mind
Hes a WHITE BOX HERO
He took one dee ten, White Box Hero, orcs on his mind
WHITE BOX HERO, hell come alive tonight

In a town without a name, in a heavy downpour
Thought he passed fourth level, by the tavern door
Like a trip through the past, to that day in the rain
And that one dee ten made his whole life change

Now he needs to keep gamin'
He won't get bored
Gotta keep on gamin'
That boy has got to be a Lord!

'Cause he's a white box hero, got orcs on his mind
He's a white box hero, got a plus one sword
Yeah, white box hero, just four levels more
With that one dee ten he'll come alive
Come alive tonight

Now he needs to keep gamin'
He won't get bored
Gotta keep on gamin'
That boy has got to be a Lord!

And be a WHITE BOX HERO, got orcs on his mind
Hes a WHITE BOX HERO, got a plus one sword
Just one dee ten, put stars in his eyes
He's just a white box hero, aah aah aah
White box hero, white box hero, hes got orcs on his mind
Orcs on his mind

If you know why he's fourth level:

you might be old school.

Oh gosh, I think - yes, I think there are actual tears forming... :smallwink:

...Que my story about how in the old days you had to colour in the numbers on your dice with a wax crayon.

Nicely done sir, nicely done.

Double that and you get a super hero.

But of course, one higher up is still lording it over him. :smallwink:

Yeah, but "Double D20" didn't fit where "guitar" was in the song. ;-)

Although I love that foreigner song, I must admit, I don't get the old school reference. An explanation for us noobs?

The first public printing of D&D came in a white box (I have the brown box edition, although the box has long since disintegrated).

also, some of the early D20's simply had 1-10 printed twice on them, with the expectation that you would paint them different colours to destinguish the tens. Oh, and I mean that you would paint them. they didn't bother applying paints to the dice, just cast them and milled the numbers out. you'd have to get a fine detail brush and paint the numbers to make them visable.

dunno about the fouth level thing, though. I only know about the dice because mine are mostly hand me down off my mother, who told me about these werid and stange early days (as we sat and played AD&D).

Actually, you smeared them with soft crayon and then wiped the surface with a cloth; the crayon in the number stayed behind and the stuff on the face was removed.

A fourth level fighter is a "hero" in pre-3e. Eighth is "super-hero".

IIRC the OD&D core book capped at 4th, too. Everything else was in sourcebooks.

I just HAD to put on Foreigner and read super-slow once I saw what you did there. I may not be old school, but my hat's off to you still.

C'mon. If you're gonna tell "I remember when" stories, go back to when the dice weren't quite regular!

Heh, and the problem that they were made out of such poor quality plastic that after a while the d20 was no longer so much an icosahedron as it was. . . err. . . a sphere.

-edit - oh yeah, and mondo kudos to the OP.

Nah, it's because in the White Box version of OD&D Level 4 was also known as "Hero Level".

BD&D capped levels at 3 or 4 in the starter set, which is probably what you are thinking of.

That reminds me: I was going to point out that the spells-per-day for magic users chart in OD&D goes up to 16th level, so there's no hint of a cap at 4th level.
