Bildungsroman is indeed a German word. I can't think of the real translation (something "novel," since "Roman" is "novel"), but it means a coming-of-age story.

EDIT: Wikipedia, of all places, has an article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bildungsroman) on it. It translates as "novel of formation."
