I would like to have a different familiar than the DMG has. A monkey in particular. What would the special ability be for exotic animals? Different ones off the top of my head... Monkey, Parrot, Beaver, Turtle, Chicken... etc.

I was about to start a similar thread because I want a platypus familiar. About the animals you said, I'd stick with sstoopidtallkid but change the +10speed of the chicken to a +3 to search.

Parrots are not diplomatic. They are mimics. They should give you Perform (impressions). Of course that ability is almost useless. But entertaining.

I'd say +3 Profession (Sailor) checks.

To the OP, the DMG has some options for more exotic familiars, and there's always the Improved Familiar line of feats from various sources that give you new options.

Of course, most of these familiars would call for an 'Improved Familiar' feat.

Rock: DR 1/-
Bonding Plant: +3 to Perform(Comedy)*
Duck: +3 to Heal checks**
Fish: +3 to checks to hold your breath.
Newt: +2 to saves against involuntary shapechanging. Grants reroll of save 1/month against permanent shapechanging.

*This one's really obscure. Cookie if you figure it out.
**Sorry.

Yes, i think they did. Those are on par with the other bonuses in the PHB. I do think that the chicken should be +5 speed or +3 search.
Penguin: +3 to swim checks.

I think that chicken speed thing is too powerful, but search will do nicely.

These are good for the most part. Rock is good, Fish is weak, I'm not gonna go into duck or plant, Newt is useless. So rock is good.

Monkey:+3 Climb
Parrot:+3 Diplomacy
Beaver:+3 to all craft skills
Turtle:+1 NA
Chicken:+10 move speed

All good, 'cept chicken which should be search.

Did you just come up with that?

Edit: Penguin should be like +5 to checks made to resist cold, or like cold resistance 3 or something.

Off the top of my head. And yes, chicken would be good for search, but I like having a chicken make it easier for you to run away.

There's stats for a parrot in Stormwrack, and I think turtle is in Sandstorm, but not 100% on that one.

Nah. For, Chicken, you should be conscious below 0 hp, but the DM gets to roll on the table for Confusion to determine what you do.

Monkey- +3 Climb or +3 Tumble (DR351 p69 or DR341 p89, respectively).

Parrot- +3 Appraise, speaks one language (Storm p52).

Beaver- No official source, but I support the +3 to Craft.

Turtle- +1 AC when prone or behind cover (DR323 p98).

Chicken- No official source, but I support the +3 to Search.

Platypus- No official source, but I suggest +3 on saves vs. poison.

Make a Will save.Aww, he's kind of cute. Or she. I'm not sure how one tells. Reminds me of the spiders Mom keeps around the house.
