Hey, just a quick mental exercise here.

If you were to make a party of "beast-folk" (i.e. humanoids with animal qualities) to fill out the 4 basic roles, what would you use? (Please, no anthropomorphic animals or awakened animals, just humanoids and monstrous humanoids)...

Off the top off my head:

Ibixian Barbarian
Centaur Cleric
Catfolk Sorcerer
Gnoll Rogue

Catfolk adapter
Catfolk Druid
Catfolk druid
Catfolk rouge.
'Honestly a druid fills the healer, buff, primary spellcaster, AND tank rolls.

Do lycanthropes count?

Hmm..

Minotaur Barbarian
Aarakroca Druid
Wemic Warlock
Tibbit Beguiler

Not sure if Aarakroca/Tibbit count for this, but I like them anyway!

Centaur Sorceress
Minotaur Rogue
Lizardfolk Fighter (Samurai)
Gnoll Cleric

Why? Because I actually *have* all these characters made already. Just not all in the same edition or group currently.

Winni (Actually my wife's character, in 3.0)
Tarn (3.5)
Ssachkaa (1st edition OA)
Garr, Hand of God (2nd edition)

Gnoll Barbarian.
Tortle Cleric (it's slow, but it gets a +3 AC bonus).
Tabaxi Wizard ( http://www.silverdragonpress.com/rpg/tabaxi_3e.html ).
Phanaton Rogue.

To get round the Gnoll's LA, I'd use my variant (+2 Str and Con, -2 Int and Cha, 1d6 Bite attack, +1 Natural Armour, and Spot and Listen always as class skills). Phanatons and Tortles are found on http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/rules/DnD3.5Index-Races.pdf .

Ok I'm surprised no one mentioned a doppelganger rogue, seriously they make the best faces ever!
Everyone in this party I have played before;

Doppelganger Rogue
Lizardfolk Druid
Satyr Fighter

And are you ready for this....

Half-Celestial Minotaur Cleric.

That was the character that was the funnest to play! Have you ever seen a flying minotaur?

Doppelganger aren't really half-animals, though (admittedly, they could impersonate a half-animal race, but I'm guessing that using a real humanoid animal race would be better here due to LA being an issue).

Raptoran and Bugbear everything. The rest of them pretty much suck.

Raptoran Swordsage
Bugbear Barbarian
Raptoran Bard
Raptoran Psion
Bugbear Crusader

Is anyone else using any sort of variant which eliminates (or at least reduces) LA?

I actually like the racial class concept out of Savage Species. I changed it a bit though, allowing characters to multiclass freely before they max out the racial levels, and mixed it in with the 3.0 multiclassing at 1st level rules. That allows characters to start at 1st level with these LA races, but still have their class concepts, and be 'reasonably' balanced with the other characters.

I thought a lot of those looked weak due to losing HDs to be honest (I know Gnolls in that book are basically Half-Orcs without racial levels, which is why I created my (hopefully) more balanced variant.

Yeah, I usually do some more adjustments, so that 1 lvl = 1 HD at least. I just like the *concept* of racial levels relative to the rest of the ruleset.
