It's any game people want to make but yes, mostly it's d&d. To learn I would suggest a real life experiance but other than that there's this (http://www.d20srd.org/) as well as the friendly newbie game that pops up now and then.

well I play dnd in real life, but it seems like there are more characters and different rules to make the character, can someone tell me about this?

Perhaps you're playing with an older edition of D&D? Most of the games here are 3.5 edition. You can be updated by reading the SRD or downloading a few updates on the wizard's site.

There's the SRD. Everything you need to know about playing and rules now.

And there's a nifty feature of the D&D homepage.

Then here's another :)
It's an online character sheet that might help. You have to make an account but it's basically the universal sheet here on these boards.
All the characters from core:
http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/classes.htm
There's the classes
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/races.htm
And there's the races.

I don't see any right now but if you wait maybe a week one might pop up. Or you could join any recruiting one and talk to the dm about you being new.

Or you could ask me to make you a game :P

You want to know ALL the classes and races?

All the base classes base classes in books released by wizards:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lists/class

All the prestige classes in books released by wizards:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lists/prc
(You can read about prestige classes here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/prestigeClasses/prestigeClasses.htm)

Unfortunately there aren't any consolidated lists for the base and playable races.

The important thing to remember is that D&D can be as simple or as complex as your group wants it to be. You can play with only the three core books or (at your DM's discretion) you can choose from some of the dozens and dozens of expansion books.

---

As for how to make a character, I can't tell you that. Although the SRD you have been linked to earlier contains many of the rules, it does not contain rules on character creation. Everything from the SRD is available legally under an open gaming license, character creation rules do not full under this and thus cannot be posted.

If you are going to be playing this game, I strongly urge the purchase of the core rulebooks. As a player you only need one, the Players Handbook. As a DM you also require the Dungeon Master's Guide and the Monster Manual.

Players Handbook:

Dungeon Master's Guide:

Monster Manual:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndcore/177550000

Before you launch into a Play by Post game, you should read this guide:

Wow, thanks for the compliment. Though, I'm not exactly sure it deserves to be stickied. If anyone feels differently though I can rewrite it as a full-on guide, tidy it up a bit, add more information to it, and all that.
