I tried putting my picture on the web and putting the path to it in the "I have my own pic" box, but when I clicked change, nothing happened. What am I doing wrong?

You have to CHECK the "I have my own pic" box AND put the URL in.

Well first you have to post $50 in used, unmarked bills to Rich's PO Box number (available in the FAQ)... ;)

OK, then you're screwed.

Shrug.

That's no news to me.

Where are you storing the picture? If you are using a service like PhotoBucket, they often give you sample code that includes the complete image tags. For example, it might say "Use this on message boards [ img ]http://photosite.com/yourimage.gif[ /img ]." In such a case, you need to make sure that you are not including the "[ img ]" and "[ /img ]" tags and just use the URL.

I often have trouble selecting only part of the sample code and wind up copying and pasting the whole thing myself. So I have to delete all the unneccessary stuff later on. If that's the case with you, make sure you delete the entire tag, or you'll still end up with a bum URL.

(Yeah, that's a little basic and obvious advice, but sometimes it's easy to overlook the glaringly obvious. I'm just covering all the bases.)

If you're having problems, try these steps.

Step 1:
You need to host the image somewhere that supports remote linking. Many sites block this so make sure your image host supports it. One such site is Photobucket. http://www.photobucket.com/

Step 2:
Tick "I have my own pic"

Step 3:
Paste the complete url to your image, this will be in the form of "http://www.host.com/folder/image.gif", this may either be a .gif or .jpg image. You can use a .png image, but be aware that .png format is not universally accepted by all browsers and, although it displays the image, internet explorer does not support transparencies in .png images. It must contain the http:// and must not contain any characters before the http:// or after the .gif/.jpg extension.

Step 4:
Most important. Do not click anything else, do not click an image next to "Personalized Picture", this will override your personal picture selection.

Step 5:
Scroll down and click "Change Profile".

Hopefully that should help, lemmie know how it goes.

Follor RawHide's instructions. Do NOT use PNG formats on the web, they are not yet uniformally accepted by all browsers. If you still have a problem, please come back here and provide us / me with step by step recount of what you did to change your avatar.

Ok, so here is what I did, after doing it with my own image, which didn't work, I tried using someone elses avatar as a test, so first I copied the image location, then I pasted it in the I have my own picture text box, and checked the box. Then I clicked "Change Profile" and nothing happened, except the page basically reloaded (updated the page, but there were no changes).

Send me a PM with a link to the avatar you want to use.
