FAQ

Q. Where did you get the idea to do this?

A. This started as a game (Guess which character had the most appearances, then second most, etc.), but once all characters with three or more appearances were guessed, someone had the idea of keeping a running total, just for curiosity's sake. Then someone thought it might belong here instead of silly games, so n11 moved the list here instead of there. When n11's thread got 'ported over to the new forum, the formatting changes made it difficult to read. Plus, n11 hasn't shown up for quite a few comics, so the list was falling hopelessly out of date. So I have reformatted the list for the new forums and updated it. n11 hasn't shown up in the new incarnation of the forums, so now I'm doing it. You can see the second iteration of the thread here: Number of Character Appearances (Improved!) The first iteraton of the thread was purged when the boards were purged in February 2009.

Q. What counts as an appearance?

A. Any likeness of the character being visible (so Elan's appearance on Nale's blueprint counts, and Belkar's self-portrait in blood counts) and any dialog from a character, even if "off-panel" or invisible (so the strip where the party is in the invisibility sphere counts for each of the main characters)

Q. What's with the stuff in red and blue?

A. Red means an appearance in bonus strips from the books or the strips published in Dragon Magazine. Each page of the book or magazine is treated as a separate strip. Blue means an appearance on multiple pages of a multi-page comic.

Thanks to Fawkes (aka Mechafox), Paladin Carver, Porthos, Flame of Anor, SPoD, Gift Jeraff, and all the other members who helped to compile all those bonus appearances!

Q. If two characters have the same number of appearances, in what order do you list them?

A. Characters are listed first by the number of standard appearances (as indicated with black numbers), and then alphabetically.

Q. What's up with all the raised letters?

A. These endnotes represent an existence-ending event to a character, such as when a character has been killed (i.e., Nale kills the Chief). Note that in D&D, not all death is permanent. In that case, the event is listed in lowercase (i.e., Xykon's phylactery restoring his body). Some characters have died, but we don't know why (for example, we know that Eugene Greenhilt died many times before dying permanently of old age). Other characters have died, but we don't the name of the killer (such as when Fruit Pie the sorcerer is killed by an anonymous goblin). Such events are denoted with "U". If two endnotes are connected by a hyphen ("-"), it means they jointly killed the subject.

The endnotes currently in use are:
ADied of old age.
BKilled by Belkar.
CKilled by Redcloak.
DKilled by Durkon.
EKilled by Elan/destruction of Redmountain Gate.
FKilled by Tarquin, Elan and Nale's father.

PKilled by the Empress of Blood.
QKilled by Crystal.

TKilled by Thog.
UKilled by Unnamed Characters or Unknown Causes.
VKilled by Vaarsuvius.
WKilled by Sabine.
XKilled by Xykon.
YKilled by Daimyo Kubota.
ZKilled by Tsukiko
#Killed by Mr. Scruffy
^Killed by Thanh
Deaths caused by named characters seen only in bonus material:
!Killed by Shelby the Dragonslayer
@Killed by Mega-Golem
$Killed impermanently by 4e!Belkar
%Killed by White Emperor

Q. Why haven't you listed the goblins/hobgoblins/zombies/ghouls/ghasts/Azure City guards?

A. A character only gets listed if it is recognizable as an individual or if it's a recurring distinct group (such as the flumphs or the demon roaches). The indistinct masses do not get listed.

Q. How did you choose the name for :mitd:?

A. Monster in the Darkness is his most frequently used name. The cast page in War and XPs and the commentary in Don't Split the Party calls him "Monster in the Darkness". The cast page in Don't Split the Party call's him "Monster in the Dark". The cast page in No Cure for the Paladin Blues lists him as "Creature in the Darkness", and O-Chul call him "Monster-San". Until we get more firm information, we will call him "Monster in the Darkness".

Q. What about the [insert unnamed character that only appears once]?

A. If a character appears only once and is not named, then it doesn't get listed. Otherwise, the list would be completely unmanageable.

Q. Who is Ted?

A. The appearances of a goblin caster in #90, #93, #105, and #107 could be the same caster, given the limited context, and he could be given the same “Ted” first mentioned in #90, but the Giant has specified no such connection was ever intended. We're listing him anyway because we think it's clever. :smalltongue:

Q. Hey didn't you list Sabine's fiendish form as an alternate form? And wasn't this FAQ question previously about that?

A. Yes. Sabine used to be listed with her red-leathered adventurer form (the one she originally appeared in) as her "natural" form and her fiendish form as a magical alteration. But now she has appeared in her fiendish form more often than her leather-clad form, so I've switched it around. Her fiendish form is now her natural form and the red-leather clad adventurer is one of her alternate magical forms (along with the cop, geisha and schoolgirl disguises she's assumed).

Q. Why is Banjo listed as a character? Banjo is an inanimate object!

A. Blasphemy!! Seriously, you're probably right. But we like Banjo.

Q. Why is Shlubbo Noname-zaki from strip 435 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0435.html) listed? That's not his real name.

A. Well, it could be his real name. Either way, it's funny.

Q. What does not count as an "Alternate Magical Forms"?

A. We don't treat views of characters through scrying spells or devices, or characters covered in auras due to spellcasting or having a spell cast upon them as alternate magical forms.

Q. What does not count as an "Other Interesting Alteration"?

A. We don't treat corpses, changes in age, or costuming as interesting alterations.

Q. Is someone is killed by a summoned or created creature, who gets credit for the kill?

A. The summoned or created creature, not the summoner or creator.

Is it just me, or does the "Characters who appear only in bonus material" spoiler not open?

Anyway, mmmm, gotta love that fresh thread smell. You have done a great job with this, keep it up. :smallcool:

Allow me to be the first to welcome Daigo to the top 20! From unnamed NPC to top-tier character, now that's a rags-to-riches story.

Does Daigo really have eleven more appearances than Kazumi?

Chronos
2008-09-06, 12:08 PM
He got ten appearances without Kazumi on Orc Island, plus two more without her (the duplicated panel) fighting off scrags. The only time Kazumi has appeared without Daigo was when she "reassures" Elan that Haley has Belkar with her.

Since we count being banished from the material realm as being "Killed", shouldn't Roy have an indicator that he was dismissed by the Oracle?

I think Roy has to be re-linked to the Material world first, not just wandering around insubstantial on the Ethereal Plane.

Let me thank Wrecan for all this work. For some reason I care which character is "winning"

I can see Hilgya and Banjo aren't worth it to be in the top area but if Kazumi and Therkla get one more appearance (pretty likely), wouldn't that be a good moment to switch to top 25?

You have 'happily married goaler' and 'gay goaler'... I can only assume this means you are Canadian, because I can only find this term in reference to hockey  I would think that Jailer would be the correct term, wouldn't it?

You have 'happily married goaler' and 'gay goaler'
No, it's gaoler, not goaler. A gaoler is a medieval jailer. The word is correct.

Oh, and, just to be obnoxiously correcting something else that doesn't need it, wouldn't Roy be in the astral plane, not the ethereal?
No. Ghosts manifest from the ethereal plane (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#etherealness). Roy doesn't know how to manifest and even if he did, I wouldn't consider that a reconnection. Actually, given that I wouldn't consider a ghost's manifestation to be a reconnection, I realize that Eugene should still have a capital "A" from his death of old age and Xykon shouldn't get a credit for killing him by sundering Roy's greatsword.

OCD for the win! XD

Yes, but when I mentioned the Ethereal plane it was in response to RMS Oceanic discussing the Oracle's banishment.

Evil Sword (Has lines, more than you can say for Banjo XD )
Wernsworth, Celestial Dog (Is summoned by Durkon)
The vampiric half-dragon half-troll lycanthropic fiendish snail (While he doesn't have a name, he is a main character of a comic and that is what he calls himself)
The Dragon from the Cover or the Box (This one is obviously the same from the game, which is named there)
George the Goblin (Gets killed, I need to check by who)
Two other Goblins with the same stats as George (Gets killed, ditto)
Mr. Demon (Mr. Demon is awesome enough that he doesn't need lines to count)
Clyde the Conjurer (will be killed, does that count?_
Cereal Conclave: Tiger Cereal Conclave: Rabbit Cereal Conclave: Tucan (you should be able to guess who these are, but they aren't called by name)
High Priest of the Bloodsoaked Overlord (Is killed, I think by Belkar...)
The High Priest's piggy bank (hmmm, perhaps not worth counting...)
Man from the Church of Universal Ignorance (no name, but is the main character of a strip)
The nice Wizard/Red Dragon (I believe this may be an alternate form of Gary Gygax... )

I'll need to double check stuff, though.

Character pages? The only Azurites on the character page Shojo, Hinjo, Miko, Windstriker, Mr. Scruffy (each with bio), Thanh, Goggled Paladin, O-Chul, Lien, and the Wizard Paladin. Do you mean the chapter title pages? The only one with Azure City soldiers is Chapter 7, and there's zero indication that any of the four of them are Kazumi or Daigo. Besides, they appear to be fighting outside the city.

For those who see it, obviously this is before they gain any unique identifier, but I feel certain that, since given the story, the nature of the splash pages, the expressions that the two are giving (or at least the one I think is Daigo) AND the fact that Chapter 7 is where we meet them (even if they were not named yet).

Stone can be reversed, but in D&D, so can death. Hell, we even have a convention to denote when the death didn't stick. Therefore, my vote is to give V the 'kill' for the demon, and give Zz'dtri the temporary 'kill' for Celia.

But I'm used to not getting my way, so whatever.

The standard is whether is severs the character's connection to the Material Plane. Flesh to stone does not. I'm not giving Xykon a kill for permanently paralyzing O-Chul with his lich touch. It's not much different.

With blue "+1's" for Elan, Daigo, Kazumi, Therkla, and (because of the tiny rowboat in the last panel) Kubota. Also, if we are determining petrified characters to not be dead yet, then the giant pit fiend gets an appearance in panel #9.

Also, since we don't have an endnote for Kubota (and "K" is already in use for Therkla herself), may I suggest "Q"? As in "Killed by Qarr/Kubota"? I realize that Qarr doesn't actually have any kills so far, but it's all I could think of.

Alternately, since Therkla won't be racking up any more kills, we could convert "K" to "Killed by Kubota/Therkla", though that gives us the weird situation of it looking like Therkla killed herself.

EDIT: Took too long to write down, got ninja'd by the man himself. Nice use of the "Y", I didn't think of that. My point on the pit fiend still stands; if he's not dead, then he got an appearance.

Just to note we only have five letters left for endnotes. I'm thinking that there are some endnotes we can shift to numbers. For example, the characters killed in the battle of intermission are unlikely to be brought back to life, so we can change that to a "1". The samurai killed by Therkla are not being brought back and Therkla is unlikely to kill others now, so we can change the "K" to "2". We might also want to think about getting rid of the "J" for the removal by lawyers. That would free up three letters.

Thoughts?

RMS Oceanic

Have you considered using two letters? Like Daimyo Kubota?

Sir_Norbert
2008-09-18, 02:02 PM
That would create a problem if someone was killed by Kubota and then ressurected -- the endnote would be ambiguous with "killed by Durkon and then ressurected and then killed by Therkla and then resurrected".

I agree with changing the less important endnotes to numbers, but only as and when needed -- e.g. if Kazumi kills a named character then you might want to "release" K. The letters are much easier to remember who they belong to, so we should keep them as long as possible.

I suspect Spartacus mean "updating it", althoguh I don't know if that's any clearer - we don't update the count randomly, we updte it after every strip. I actually think that's easier than updating it every 25 strips or so, because it's easier to have the count checked by the others who are following this thread as we go.

And what criteria are we using to split the ranking of characters that have appeared the same number of times? Both Hinjo and Miko have had 68 appearances in the main strip - why is Hinjo ranked 10th and Miko 11th? Is it the most recent strips "win"? I must say that I'd personally prefer them both to be rather =10th, and for the next character to be ranked 12th. That's just me, though...

The blue and red numbers are added together; the higher total wins the tie, because it means that they appeared in more actual pages of the entire OOTS storyline.

SpoD is wrong. It's alphabetical. The same way I rank it on those who are not in the top 25.

I can't give ties the same number because I use the autolist function and that doesn't allow for ties.

Lira just mentioned in another thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5089833&postcount=22) that there's a lot of detail in the first panel of 450 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0450.html) that's distinguishable in the book but not in the online comic, including several characters who appear there who might not have been otherwise apparent. Have we accounted for them?

Belkar, Roy, the Eye of Fear and Flame, Tsukiko, Redcloak, and the MitD are all visible in the book. Tsukiko's the only one I can reasonably see being missed from the count, but I think we probably got her.

I think they might be proposing that as an Interesting Alteration that we may want to keep track of separately.

I'm inclined to agree with Chronos about Skullsy and Huecuva counting as representations of Xykon as well - the hard part is when do you stop counting them as such? It's a very grey area so there's probably no "right" decisions, just practical ones...

...and the same dragon doll we've seen several times before, if we're keeping track of that. The dragon Roy was playing with in 113 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0113.html) was pink, while this one appears to be grey. The only other dragon toy I know of is the one Monster-san has, and it's green (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0474.html).

As far as "representations", the bloody self-portrait of Belkar didn't have anyone fooled that it really was Belkar, but it's still a representation. I would argue that since the robes were given to the decoys to make them look like Xykon, that they should be counted as representations as long as they're wearing the robes (so the Death Knight doesn't count as a representation from 436 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0436.html) on).

Stats on Xykon and the Triplet Decoys

422: Eye of Fear and Flame. At this point the decoys hadn't been introduced yet and we're supposed to think Redcloak is talking to Xykon. The pendent, though, matches the Eye of Fear and Flame. The top panel has the entire army, though I can only make out one skeleton. Presumably it's the EFF as well.

426: Eye of Fear and Flame (+1), Huecuva (+1), Death Knight (+1). Two of the decoys are clearly not Xykon. The Huecuva is talking to Red Cloak the same way Xykon does so we were probably meant to believe it was the real Xykon at this point.

428: Eye of Fear and Flame, Huecuva, Death Knight, Xykon. The ruse is revealed. We now know that the real Xykon was invisible. We still don't know what the other three are.

429: Xykon (+1). Normal.

430: Xykon (+1). Normal.

431: Xykon, Death Knight, Huecuva, Eye of Fear and Flame. Here we found out what the three decoys are. After this it should be obvious until the decoys are destroyed.

The total number of actual, physical appearances of each character from when the first decoy was introduced (422) to when the last one was destroyed (EFF skull, by Haley in 469) is:

Xykon: 17 (+6)
Huecuva: 5 (+2)
Death Knight: 7 (+1)
Eye of Fear and Flame: 9 (+3)

Edit: Oh, the number of times at least one of them is wearing the cloak, and can represent Xykon is 6 (+2).
Edit: This adds 4 (+3) to Xykon's total if we count the fact that Xykon has an actual appearance in some of those strips.

Counting the decoys as Xykon is bull.

First off, there's no need to use harsh language. This is a friendly thread.

Second, we count any time there is a representation of a character. We counted the statue of Xykon. We counted the picture of Belkar and Miko. We count illusions of characters as appearances. So if someone is designed to look like another character it must be an appearance for both, until their appearance is so altered that they no longer count as a representation of the character they were designed to emulate.

All of which is described in the FAQ, I think... as well as the fact that we count it as an appearances if a comic features any dialogue for the character, even if the character themselves doesn't appear (remember the comic where they're all invisible?)

Personally, I'd prefer certain things to be done otherwise as well - but these are the guidelines this thread operates under, and I'm more than appreciative of the value I get out of how it IS being done - my thanks again to Wrecan and the others Mechafox, Oceanic and the others I have no doubt missed who continue to contribute to it. If the aforementioned guidelines are sufficiently unpalatable to you as to make the cost / benefit equation of following this thread not worthwhile, you're more than welcome to start another thread using your own system and crunch the numbers there. Once you get through that initial mountain load of work, maintaining it isn't so bad.

I did this for the first 10 strips ages ago to see how much work it would take, and posted it in a previous incarnation of this thread:
Haley 45
Roy 36
Elan 36
Belkar 35
Durkon 35
Vaarsuvius 28

The biggest headache I had was dealing with the multitude of other characters that appear which we drop out of our main list with the simple rule of "must be Named or appear in more than one strip". And trying to decide whether it was worth categorising it a bit more. The balance of my initial exercise, for example, was:
dead ogress 5
goblins 4
dead goblin 3
ninjas 3
ogre 3
Blackwing 2
dead ogres 2
ogres 2
goblin 1

I was trying to give more detail rather than less, but it's still not ideal - for example, if a panel includes both live ogres and dead ogres, that'd be one of each, making it hard to answer the question "how many panels does at least one ogre - alive or dead - appear in"?

I got no comments about it at the time, so never bothered to do anything more with it...

Caedrel

Oh, and the other thing I noticed, the numbers could change a lot with each comic. Adding the next 5 comics (strips 1-15) gives this total:
Roy 76
Haley 69
Elan 54
Belkar 50
Durkon 50
Vaarsuvius 37
Eugene 10

And here's another complication - in strip 14, there's a dream sequence where Roy appears twice in one panel... that counts as one panel, but raises the question of whether we should be counting multiple appearances per panel as well...

The other thing that occurred to me was that some of the panels are quite small - some of them are quite big. Are all panels considered equal? Would we make a note about the size of each panel? And so on...

Hmm... I would figure not including the no-named characters at all if it were done panel by panel. There's simply too many generic mooks for that to be too useful.
It also multiplies the problem we've got with the naming of this multitude of unnamed characters - the recent example of "Bandana Paladin" v "Do-Ragged Paladin" is a case in point! But it would tell us how many times has Rich included goblins in the comic? You could answer questions like "what's the proportion of panels that goblins v hobgoblins appear in?" And if we can grab it now when doing this level of detail, it's a LOT easier than trying to add it back in later and going through all the comics yet again...

...To add strips 11,12,13 to the list:

(counts)
Thanks, but it'd be good if you could break that down on a strip by strip basis - I can then just add it to my spreadsheet and the pivot table will take care of the sums. It would also make it a lot easier to check for accuracy, because I'd think that the scope for error when trying to count panel by panel appearances would be ENORMOUS!

If you'd be interested in continuing with this, I guess we should start our own thread, rather than clogging up this one...

Hm... I personally think it's more useful only to include named characters, but I definitely see your argument, considering how much "following" certain characters have received. Additionally, statistics of goblin v. hobgoblin use can be fascinating.

Ah, spreadsheet counting is a good idea.

Is there any chance we could use some internet software to have a shared spreadsheet? I think google docs allows that, but I'd rather use something different.

If you'd be interested in continuing with this, I guess we should start our own thread, rather than clogging up this one...
That would be a good idea. I can only promise update of several comics/week though, but I can definitely assist. Which comic number should I begin at to provide the most assistance? Did you "end" at #10 or 15?

Chronos

Thinking ahead, here, but if we count panels, how would last comic (606) count? Belkar appears in most of the regular panels, but he's also the background for the entire strip.

DarkCloud
2008-11-16, 12:28 AM
...I would assume only +1, because isn't every panel just a subset of a larger panel? (The borders of which Belkar is in.)

It's a good question, but as was mentioned previously, we should probably discuss this in a different thread and not clutter this one. :o
