Painter 6 and avatars

i made my own avatar and so on,... i just cant get the background to be transparent,... i only really have painter 6 on my pc was wondering if any of you 'se could give me a hand

get the GIMP...it i useful. for instructions see the Avatar making section at top of this forum.
