View Full Version : Volunteers needed - YaBB upgrade

I'm thinking of upgrading the message boards to YaBB 2. It's a major change and requires converting the existing data structure to a new one (they have a tool for it). I'm also going to want to see if it will play nice under mod_perl. So, I want to set it up in a test environment. I'm going to need some volunteers to help me test it. If you're interested, please respond here with:

Operating System:
Browser Type and Version:
Connection Speed:

I'll select some volunteers from those listed and contact them via PM. I probably won't be contacting folks to say "no thanks". And, of course, all this is dependent on my setting up the test environment, which I hope to do over the weekend, but, who knows :P

Thanks

Edit: Zherog posed a question I should have answered. I'd like the testing to happen over the course of a week. No need for coordinated scheduleing.

If testing can be done in the evening or over a weekend, I'll be happy to help out. I can test under two environments:

PC 1:

OS: XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2
Browser Type and Version: Mozilla 1.7.3

PC 2:

OS: XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 1
Browser Type and Version: IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.040919-1003

I could also hijack my wife's PC for a little while; I don't know exact version numbers but she has XP home and IE.

edit: yeah, I forgot connection speed. It's cable.

I'm in.

I have access to several computers with Windows XP Professional SP1 and SP2 running IE6 SP2 and Firefox. If you would like I can get a complete rundown of all respective version combinations. Connection speed: 512/128 ADSL

Edit: Oh, well, over the course of a week, I can also get sporadic access to computers with Win95/98 and 2000 running IE5/5.5/6.

Browser Type and Version: Firefox 1.0.6
Connection Speed: Cable modem

I also have IE 5.2.2, Netscape 7.1, Opera 6.0, and Safari 2.0.1 for Mac OS X. If you're interested in testing for older Mac OS, I can run OS 9.2 in Classic mode, and I have IE, Netscape, and Opera in those versions, also.

Just out of curiosity, is that actually TESTED at 100 bits? Or is that what you ISP says? I am willing to bet you get less than 75 percent of that.

Samiam303

Assuming she uses the same DSL provider as me, the reason it comes up as 100 Mbps. is that it uses your PC's ethernet port, which gets 100 Mbps. Therefore, it shows the highest speed your pc could handle, not the actual speed your getting.
NOTE: I'm sharing my DSL connection wirelessly at 11 Mbps, and not noticing any differences from the PC it's actually connected to. Therefore, the actual speed is less than 11 Mbps.

Mod bumps the thread with his hip, in hopes that it will get back on topic.

I knew what the poster meant when they typed it, no need for further discussion.

Allrighty RawBear, I was directing that to the guy who had asked, not to you. Just out of curiousity, do you have any idea when the upgrade's actually gonna happen? :P ::)

Maybe if I keep saying stupid things you'll keep correcting them and I don't ever have to take a dummies guide to computers class. ::) ;D
How the heck am I supposed to know what the actual speed is then? :-[

I just read that the upgrade was around Jan 1st...

Samiam303

It wasn't stupid, just wrong. :P And you aren't supposed to know... they want you to think they're giving you 100 Mbps.

I would assume that samiam303 would like an answer, i would also like to know but no hurry, i've been here since a little while before Rawbear said the upgrade would happen, i think, and i haven't noticed any changes to the boards.

I also seem to remember Rich posting a message on the 'News' on the home page saying that there were going to be some changes to the website and wondered if the two topics were linked.

I don't really care if my question get's answered or not, I've just got nothing better to do than hand around here and harass the mods. ;D

Rawbear, it's been long enough that I think it's safe to ask again: ;) Is this upgrade ever going to happen in the near future, or are we just sticking with the New Server for now?

Upgrading the board software is on the to do list, but got pushed downward in priority. Thanks for all of the offers of assistance, when the priority reaches critical, i'll be contacting some of you for assistance.
