So, it looks like CERN is going to be running experiments pretty soon. Who else is excited?

oh wow! i'd be surprised if they didn't.
i totally don't care.

I'd probably be more excited if I had any idea what CERN was. Then again I'd probably nkow what CERN was if I wasnt temp banned from Wikipedia

How'd you manage that?

Here's a link to their page:
http://public.web.cern.ch/public/

Edit: well, technically it's the LHC that they're going to start experimenting with soon

OHHHHH The hadron collider, why didn't you say so. Yeah I'd like to see some cool stuff done with that thing. Like collide and apple and an orange. Or cut it in half to make an epic snowball cannon. Seriously though it should be pretty awesome.

As for wikipedia...I edited expletives into a few articles.

I'm apathetic. However, I do think they need better security (http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2226039/hackers-attack-cern)...

You know, before Wikipedia, there was Google.
We still have Google.

They were related to children's programming (dora, Barney, ect.) and I despise them.

That sounds like my idea of a good time!

Plus LHC FTW. I hope we get something useful out of it. Haha, psych! There won't be any new toasters even if they find what they're looking for. Depressing, right?

drek isn't worth enough points, if you're going to destroy something, it has to at least be tough to break. it's like like running over senior citizens, sure it's fun, but there's no challenge

seriously though, when you love something, you take care of it, however broken. be it a planet or someone on it.

This is, I think, the third thread on the LHC. But I did hear that it's already closed down cos the supercoolers weren't working that well. They'd be starting up soon again anyway.

BizzaroStormy

I thought is was closed down because it was hacked into. Wasn't a big deal. The guys were simply showing that the security was too lax. I think they left their message just outside the controls for the LHC.

Nope. A few coolers failed, and they shut it down for repairs. Should take a few days. I coujld show you the article, but it's in german.

Eh, could be worse. (And you all know it.) V's gender!

At least this time there's a chance that something exciting might happen. Maybe. Once security and/or coolers are dealt with.

Exciting in that the experiment can provide some solid evidence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higgs_boson) to work with to support a unifying theory of physics, yes.

Exciting in that it might destroy the world, no. There's a better chance that I'll destroy the world by driving a bus down a subway tunnel.

All the LHC does is replicate interaction of particles in the upper atmosphere under observable conditions, with an on/off switch. Nothing is going to take place in it that doesn't happen billions of times every day when the sun's rays interact with Earth's atmosphere.

Here's a news story (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iF3eB5oJHa4q5phLpr8u8gitxkiAD93AEM3G0) in English.

"It's too early to say precisely what happened, but it seems to be a faulty electrical connection between two magnets that stopped superconducting, melted and led to a mechanical failure and let the helium out," Gillies told The Associated Press.

Gillies said the sector that was damaged will have to be warmed up well above the absolute zero temperature used for operations so that repairs can be made — a time-consuming process.

"A number of magnets raised their temperature by around 100 degrees," Gillies said. "We have now to warm up the whole sector in a controlled manner before we can actually go in and repair it."

Just a reminder that the LHC literally runs on Rule Of Cool. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfCool)

EDIT: though "the absolute zero temperature used for operations" is obviously an approximation.
