View Full Version : RAM Issues - Help me, Obi-Wan Computernobi. You're my only hope!

Ok, so here's the thing...I recently bought this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098) RAM set (G.Skill 2x1GB PC2-6400 DDR2, for those who don't want to follow the link) and installed it. Windows picks it up fine, and it seemed to be working, but I suddenly started getting "Error #134" constantly in WoW, and Blizzard's tech support suggested it may be a memory issue. I ran the RAM diagnostic tool included with Vista, and it tells me there's a problem, but not what that problem is. I tried swapping RAM slots around a bit to see if it'd help, but no dice.

Now I come to you, oh computer gods of the Playground, seeking your divine wisdom! I don't know much about RAM or anything, or how to find out what the problem may be or how to fix it. Is there anyone out there that can help me? I'm not totally computer illiterate, just not familiar with hardware, so I might not need complete walking through of every step...

Looking around, your best bet may be to try and uninstall/reinstall WoW.

I've also seen it mentioned that it's a problem with your video card, so try updating your drivers.

I would download memtest86 from www.memtest.org and run it and see what it has to say about your ram. Your best bet will probably be do download an ISO cd image, burn it to CD and boot from that CD.

Try downloading the memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) iso (I've so far found the original to be the best) and running that. Just slap it in the drive and reboot, you may need to change some settings in your BIOS to boot from CD though. Leave it running overnight.

If you find any errors, remove one stick of RAM and try again, keep changing the stick of RAM you have removed until you find no errors. Then put only that stick of RAM in and test it.

Ok, I'll try that probably tomorrow (need the computer today for school -_-) then. I've never used memtest before...is there a specific error I should look for, or anything of the sort? Other than just removing sticks until I isolate the bad one (assuming one actually is), anyway, or should I just figure out if/which one is bad and see what specifically is wrong afterwards?

Any errors are bad. Leave it on overnight and check it when you wake up, make sure it does many passes as the first pass may very well be error free but later ones find problems.

Alright, I'll reinstall the new RAM tonight then and let it go while I'm sleeping and at school. *crosses fingers* Hopefully it's not bad...I really hate dealing with return policies. Although I don't know what I need to do to fix the "Error #134" thing if it's not bad...

Ok, so I realized I didn't have blank CDs and it set me back a day, but I finally got the results in. Pertinent information (I think):

Lowest error address: 00000ffffc
Highest error address: 000fffffffb
Maximum contiguous errors: 1
Errors per memory slot: 0: 3
1: 0
2: 1
3: 999999


So I'm thinking the slot 3 one is the culprit and needs replacing, right?
