My vote is the Lufia III music all the way.

I am running a D&D session in a few hours, and I need some good background music and some killer battle music.

I always felt that the SNES stuff was by far the best. However, I guess I might be a bit bias on this. :smallfrown:

edit:
p.s. And if anyone can help me track down the Lufia III music, that would be extremely appreciated!

Tales of Phantasia - Fighting The Spirit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF_T1FplLCk) (link goes to the PS version, the SNES version is better)
Seiken Densetsu 3 - Nuclear Fusion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u107vJFlFg)
Bahamut Lagoon - Army of the Rebellion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTbg2_KdgXM&feature=related), Army of the Savior (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gq-0vpyRe48&feature=related), Fahrenheit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms-fY90TEHE)
Chrono Trigger - too many to count
Final Fantasy 6 - ditto

Tales of Phantasia has already been mentioned - the Dream Will Not Die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3SA9LuqQgA) is also great and was freaking amazing for an SNES game.

Chrono Trigger had a few good pieces, and Super Mario RPG was pretty awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ81OxHTrBE

I still remember my surprise when I've seen the ToP intro for the first time - voices on SNES!

Now I want to play this game again. One of the best RPGs ever.

Sadly, for me, it hasn't aged well. I got it on GBA, ready to relive the memories, and instead I got so frustrated at how clunky the combat system is compared to newer entries like Abyss and Symphonia. (Even Legendia felt better in that regard, though ONLY in that regard.)

I can't think of too many, I was never too into SNES.

Dancing mad and Celes's theme from FFVI.
Anything from Earthbound, that game kicked ass.
Chrono Trigger had some really good music as well.

I didn't like the SMRPG soundtrack that much, except for two words: Booster. Tower. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8Tiik4wKcY&feature=related)

I have never even seen let alone played Chrono Trigger, but having listened to a lot of random CT remixes on OCremix I enthusiastically second the nomination.

Lufia III, as far as I know, was never on the SNES. I thought it was only released on a portable console. Anyway, it shouldn't be too difficult to find SNES music on the web, especially for a popular game like Lufia. There are also SPC files (which are sound data from SNES games), and YouTube should have "music videos" for this game.

Indeed. o_o

I've played and emulated most SNES rpgs, and very much enjoyed the Lufia series (especially Lufia 2), but had never even heard of Lufia 3 until now. If it's for SNES then it's got to be ultra-rare...

Chrono Trigger had the best pieces in my opinion. I've still got the entire CT soundtrack on my WinAmp playlist. Especially the battle with Lavos's second form had an awesome piece - "World Revolution" - along with the Battle with Magus, few other boss battles and many of the Zeal-pieces, along with Ocean Palace and the castle musics were awesome, not to mention the characters' themes, with the possible exception of Marle's, and "To Far Away Times" (the ending music).

FFVI had some good ones too. Also, Seiken 3 had a few awesome ones (Sacrifice, Meridian Child, Female Turbulence, Strange Medicine, Decision Bell, Secret of Mana, Rolling Cradle, Black Soup and well, almost all of them). Oh yeah, Star Fox had a few great ones too. And I'll add Super Mario RPG as well - the only game with an awesome soundtrack that I've failed to acquire for my computer.

Final Fantasy V's music was quite consistently fantastic, on the level of Chrono Trigger in my opinion. FFVI's music included a few really good memorable pieces, but was otherwise boring music-wise. But that's just Square. Some of my favourite music on the SNES comes from Zelda: LttP, a bit from Mario World, and while I haven't finished the game yet, Star Ocean's music has been great so far, as well as being of ridiculously high quality for an SNES game. I've also started playing Tales of Phantasia, but apart from just having vocals, I don't see what's so good about it. I generally guage a soundtrack by how memorable it is.

Crisis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ek3EUYlz-d0) - Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) boss theme. Couldn't find the original SNES version.
The Decisive Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BW78PN6z50) -- FF6 Boss theme.
Battle to the Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_1_dKYiEqk&feature=related) -- FF6 Boss theme against the first Atma Weapon and the three Goddesses.
And of course...
Dancing Mad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNwvlqNMHq0). Best song for fighting a chaotic evil ascended clown.

Damn, I feel like an idiot. I can not believe I forgot that. And I freaking loved that game to boot. I feel bad now. I was even remembered borrowing borrowing my little brother's copy and SP system to use it.

I also figured I was the only fan still around who even remembered this game. I have never met anyone else who has ever played it, or even knows about it, but it was a great part of my past.

I still regret never doing/finishing the 100 level dungeon, though. I think that was where Disgaea got the idea for their 100 level dungeon.

I believe it even kept me from killing myself back then. I owe it a lot.

Every once-in-a-while I start thinking of it out of the blue. Usually started by the battle music, and most likely ending while wondering if the the hero and the former villeiness end up happy, and whether she died or if he kept her living by loving her.

Secret of Mana Title Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=226lyvZmNB8)

Gosh that was a beautiful opening for a 32 bit system. And the ever popular Mario Paint version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGvP22VnOX4&feature=related) :smalltongue:

But aside from that: Earthbound. Everything from the Title Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUgVXeFIIro&feature=related) to the End Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QcnI9EXUlI&feature=related) was excellent; heck even the Choose a File Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDPchbLPzn4&feature=related) was catchy!

A lotta Chrono Trigger mentioned, but nothing specific. My personal favorites were the music for when you're fighting Magus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhnBUd6R31k&feature=related) and one of the boss battle themes. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xICMokpo7uU&feature=related)

Most have been mentioned already but...

Secret of Mana, ChronoTrigger, Lufia, Tales of Phantasia, Megaman X2, Super Metroid, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI, Star Fox...

I'm probably forgetting some, I'll come back to this topic later.

Shouldn't this be in another sub-forum? Unless you are talking about (and your not) what music you like to play from SNES to add mood during a role play session,I don't see the relevance, for THIS particular sub-forum.

Oops. Sorry.

I figured my motives were obvious. I did make a thread within a week for help finding a background music and sound effects program for my laptop.

Why else would I have made this thread here?

p.s. Take a chill-pill.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, thank you all for the help so far!

I am currently categorizing songs on my Itunes into playlists such as "Town music", "battle music", "travel music", "dungeon music", etc. With these two threads you have been an immense help. This might bring a whole new dimension to my games.

I also feel it will affect my DMing for some strong reason.

And as for why I only asked for Snes music, well I guess the memories I hold dear of those songs on that system caused me not to even think about the fact that new games also have background music. Plus, I guess I just the idea of being able to use them in my own fantasy world after all these years.

If you know of any songs from other systems and games which would fit nicely into a high-fantasy setting please let me know.

Earthbound's "New Age Retro Hippie" battle music.
(Sorry no link...)

CT and FF3 (SIX NOT THREE COKE...) were cool too.

Really? That tune you linked to is in SD3 somewhere, and it's basically the same just with better orchestration. I suppose a lot of it comes down to nostalgia value though, and which game you're more familiar with.

Anywho, back on topic for D&D music, I tend to use themes for different characters and plot elements. Here are a few.

Druid Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY2s6dbpZ0U)

Aberration Themes (esp. "Don't Cry Jennifer 2" and "Kerosene") (http://midi.thehylia.com/downloads/snes/clock-tower)

Easy Battle Theme (PCs might take a little damage but should come away look
ing leet) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeNkqEOQ15I)

Casual Adventuring Theme ("Easy Walking") (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fBRta0Vccc)

Upbeat Peasant Theme ("Shire") (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5et383Tr27s)

You'll have an easier time if you try Danger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfMq5nt53o0). That's the name most people use for the song.

Along the same lines, I defy you to find a better final boss theme than Meridian Dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCfedAxfet0).
Also, for creepiness, you simply can't go wrong with The Oracle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUtK0fsYcps).

I never linked to a tune. I've played through SD3 several times on each storypath but the music never struck me the same way certain themes from SD2 did.

Ah, thanks.
Meridian Dance is pretty awesome, I agree, but that fight against the Mana Beast was a bit frustrating and repetitive. Then again, most of the boss fights in SoM were (especially if you do the magic spam cheese thing).

True. I would suggest using Defender or Lucid Barrier when he starts charging. That gives me an idea, by the way. A run of the game where you're not allowed to cast a spell on the same enemy until after the damage shows up, which negates the "pile-freeze" thing.

I can't believe only one person so far has mentioned Super Metroid. For me, that game had some of the most memorable songs I've ever heard.

Case in point: Brinstar; Underground Depths (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qzf74K09QOo), Brinstar; The Jungle Floor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UIz_cUtHzM), Maridia; Swampy Caverns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIwG-BH3DeE), Maridia; Sandy Desert (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y73Rc7OCCeg), Norfair; Hot Lava Area (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2o7yXfuLHY), Norfair; Ridley's Hideout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdO8hH3BlJY)

The boss music is alright too, but the rest of the soundtrack is just so much better for atmosphere.

Yeah, the purpose of gathering the files is for D&D, but the thread itself is actually about SNES game music, which would go in Gaming (Other). Though it does kinda toe the line, so it's a mod's call.
