I've recently been searching for class guides on the forums: and was thinking: wouldn't it be useful if we could gather all the class guides ITP into one handy thread? Well, yeah. I guess. I mean, not brilliantly useful, like the invention of the light bulb, but mildly useful for when you need it, like the cordless phone.

So far, my searching has turned up the following threads:

Solo’s Stupendously Superior Sorcerer Stratagems (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74801&highlight=solo%27s+sorcerer)
The Logic Ninja's Guide to Wizards: Being Batman (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18500)
Chronos's Unalliterative Skillmonkey Guide [3.x] (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88715)
Jack-Of-All-Trades: Fax Celestis' Guide to Spellthieves (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44299)
Thethan’s guide to duskblades (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18443)

Also, these links for improving a certain class, albeit in a more specific area, or which have been created for a humouristic purpose, or are purely not as detailed as the others. If one shows up in more than one list, it belongs in more than one list.

The Optimized Monk Guide (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80888)
Beating Batman: Sir Giacomo’s Guide to Monks (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80704&highlight=guide+monks)
A strong Samurai build (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3660260#post3660260)
Being nobody: Aquillion's guide to Commoners (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80968&highlight=guide+commoner)

And some that are created for a single reason:

The Horizon Tripper (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80415)

What've I missed? I'm sure there must be others out there (also, I haven't ventured out of the playground yet...)

Please note, these are not in any order, I am not trying to put one better than the other. If your amazing guide (and I'm sure it is amazing) isn't here, it's not because it's not amazing (it is, I'm sure), it's purely because I haven't seen it yet (probably due to blindness by unnatural amounts of amazing).

I'll also put in my own thoughts on these, when I have the time.

Edit: As a side note, I did not write any of these class guides, nor did I contribute to them in any meaningful way (in fact, not at all). If, for some reason, the author of one of these would like there's removed, they need only tell me and I will oblige.

If we're only including actual guides, then the last link you added doesn't belong, as it's merely the defense of an atypical specific build, and not an overall comprehensive guide to how to make monks worthwhile in the playing.

Theres a very simple way to make a monk worth playing; Take an unarmed swordsage and roleplay it as a monk.

I agree. As seen from the title; its just aimed at beating the wizard; not on being part of a party.
By the way; are you compiling guides from all over the net or from the playground only?

I'll compile guides from everywhere, however, I'll keep seperate those from the playground, and those from other places. If I get a large amount from another web site it'll get it's own section.

You forgot Samurai. It's in my siggy.

I don't think it should be included for obvious reasons; such as the lack of a build but I think you're joking anyway.
Well I don't think this should turn into one of those threads which becomes one talking about how monks are so I think all other posts should be saved for guide recommendations.

I was in two minds about putting your samurai one in, mostly for reasons mentioned by Uthug.

Then how did Commoner, the NPC class, make it in?

Of course it's not a serious guide - but then, neither are the Commoner and the Monk guide even remotely serious. I mean, there's only one guy who took the latter seriously and he doesn't even play monks himself...

More detailed, although I moved it to the not detailed or not serious section.

My contribution:

The Horizon Tripper: Core Melee Build (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80415)

It's an all-round melee build using only the PHB and DMG which is flexible and powerful at pretty much every level.

A Gleemax compilation, the second post is primarily guides. Good for reference.

You'll wanna move the Giacomo monk guide down to the tongue in cheek section then, too. :smallamused:

Another monk guide which belongs under non-serious.

Unlike the others, this is actually a Monk Guide (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=48573) that can be taken seriously. Yes, I include Sir Giacomo's Guide as not being able to be taken seriously.

I'm not going to denigrate Giacomo's guide in the area it is supposed to be. An interesting build concept, that, in some ways, can be designed in several ways to have a lot of character flexibility.

However, my main point of contention is that it doesn't cover a broad enough scope, or the baseline of the class, well enough to be taken seriously as a comprehensive guide. It belongs in the same genre as the Horizon Tripper, IMO. It's not a guide, it's a build.

60+ pages of comments disagreeing or pointing out rule-technical flaws, false assumptions, and inconsistencies; the inevitable flame war when SG admitted he never plays that kind of character either; and a thread lock, all appear to disagree with that assessment...
