Look a the first panel - Belkar calls V self buddy. Was he really supposed to do that?

Given comic 596 (last panel, to be precise) I think that it was a typo :smallsigh:

Huh.. I thought Illsionary Belkar was complimenting himself, but that makes sense too.

I think "self buddy" is completely intentional.

Can't say for sure. When I saw it first, I thought it was a typo too.

Now I assume that it could have been done intentionally as a play with "elf" - "self" words.

Still looks more like a typo for me.:smallconfused:

self = my
buddy = friend

I just assume the illusion's grammar is the suck because it's goofball 'controlling' it.

Maybe so, but I'd like to hear Giant so he can shed light on what he intended to write :smalltongue:

First read suggested typo. Context reading suggested self-gratification. So to speak. :smallyuk:

Belkar compliments himself:

V: At least when the when the halfling was a member of this *blah blah blah*
I. Belkar: Hey, that's a good point! Rock on, self buddy.

My first thought was that V seemed so much like him, that he practically WAS Belkar... Maybe I'm reading too much into it

I definitely felt like it was a typo and intended to be "elf buddy." Also, the comma in "who is this, 'Therkla?'" is extraneous and ought to be removed, but that's less of an issue.

Uh guys, the illusion was talking about the real Belkar (his "self"). He complements himself.

The comma is supposed to represent a pause. It's kind of like this:
"Who is this... 'Therkla'?"

Yes. If you check other illusions, they also speak with weird references to people. Such as the Belkar illusion in jail. It looks intentional to me.

It's very intentional, the previous strip had "rock on elf buddy" it's a play on that.

I agree with Noobfish. Elan was trying to make the point, in my opinion, that V was acting just like Belkar.

If you look at previous comics, you'll see that The Giant often puts commas right before quotes in the middle of a sentence.

Not a mistake, very intentional, and funnier than if it were 'corrected'. Illusory Belkar is congratulating himself for being part of an OotS that was goal-focused, as remarked upon by V immediately prior in the panel.

That's how I read it too.

Spoilered for the brilliant cunning of my analysis:

Now that this has been mentioned, one of two things will occur. Either Rich realizes that he made a mistake and corrects it, or else Rich continues working on the next installment as there is no mistake to correct. (Sub-options: with either situation, Rich either will or will not comment on the topic, in this thread or elsewhere.)

Definitely not a typo.

I think the Belkar Illusion is on a loop, and the self-elf confusion is a degradation of the signal.

Belkar is congratulating himself for helping get things done, and doing so in a manner designed to sound the same as his comment at the end of the prior comic. It's the equivalent of saying, "Yay for me!" It's not a typo.

"Self" is properly spaced for 4 letters and otherwise looks intentional.

I did a double take, and then I pretty much decided this, too.

No it should be elf. Look at the last panel of the previous comic. It has Belkar repeating a similar phrase, but without the typo.

There's such a thing as context in both cases, y'know.

Haha well the second comic's context is the first in that case.

First time I reed, I thought that it was something on the line of "Selfish buddy", a critique against Vaarsuvius.
As English (and american slang) are not my first language, I did a little research, and found that "self buddy" (self.buddy) is somehow used in Python (a programing language), but could be just a coincidence (I'm not a programmer).

Yeah, but there's still two jokes in question:

1: V is so much like :belkar:, that :belkar: congratulates V by congratulating himself or
2: :belkar: is simply congratulating himself.

I've changed my mind and have settled for #2.

First time I read the comic, I didn't even notice the 's.' I thought it said elf buddy again.
