View Full Version : Songs you associate with characters

The Adder

I guess you could also call this a theme song topic. Anyways, what songs do you, for whatever reason, associate with what characters in OotS?

For me -

V Post Azure City Battle: Hysteria by Muse
Reason: Lyrics, especially the bolded ones

it's bugging me, grating me
and twisting me around
yeah I'm endlessly caving in
and turning inside out

'cause I want it now
I want it now
give me your heart and your soul
and I'm breaking out
I'm breaking out
last chance to lose control

yeah it's holding me, morphing me
and forcing me to strive
to be endlessly cold within
and dreaming I'm alive

'cause I want it now
I want it now
give me your heart and your soul
I'm not breaking down
I'm breaking out
last chance to lose control

and I want you now
I want you now
I feel my heart implode
and I'm breaking out
escaping now
feeling my faith erode

Basically the desperation and need in the song combined with the bolded lyrics really make me think of V during this arc. As a matter of fact, when I am thinking of OotS and listening to this song, during the first guitar solo I can just picture V experimenting and failing with locater spells and breaking down further and further.

Haley and Elan: Starlight by Muse (again)
Reason: Just look at these lyrics, I mean come on. Hell, Haley's last name is even Starshine!

Far away
This ship has taken me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

Starlight
I will be chasing a starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms

My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive

I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms

Far away
This ship has taken me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold

Seriously, how could I NOT think of this song in regards to those two?

Therkla: El Mañana by the Gorillaz
Reason: A VERY relevant chorus, a few relevant lines plus a remorseful tune.

Summer don't know me no more
eager man thats all

Summer don't know me
He just left me love in my sea
cuz I too know lord,
from you that
Just died yeah

I saw that day,
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Don't stop the bud when it comes
It's the dawn, you'll see

Money won't get there
Ten years past and now
You'll flee

If you do that
I'll be so
To find you

I saw that day,
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

I saw that day,
Lost my mind
Lord, I'm fine
maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Belkar: Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger
Reason: Lyrics aren't particularly relevant to the character, but they're a little perverse, a little insulting, and more than a little chaotic, remind you of anyone else?

I had visions, I was in them,
I was looking into the mirror
To see a little bit clearer
The rottenness and evil in me

Fingertips have memories,
Mine can't forget the curves of your body
And when I feel a bit naughty
I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes
(But no one ever does)

I'm not sick, but I'm not well
and I'm so hot 'cause I'm in hell

Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding
The cretins cloning and feeding
And I don't even own a TV

Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me
You told them all I was crazy
They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee, Goddamn you

I'm not sick, but I'm not well
And I'm so hot cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick, but I'm not well
And it's a sin, to live so well

I wanna publish 'zines
And rage against machines
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine
The trivial sublime
I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind
You kill my mind
Mind...

Paranoia, paranoia
Everybody's comin' to get me
Just say you never met me
I'm runnin' underground with the moles
Diggin' big holes
Hear the voices in my head
I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring
But if you're bored then you're boring
The agony and the irony, they're killing me, whoa!

I'm not sick, but I'm not well
And I'm so hot cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick, but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live this well

(One, two, three, four!)

See what I mean?

Elan and Haley: Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_moia-oVI). (Or Right Here Waiting for You by Richard Marx (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQF9kpwupe) or Eyes on Me by Faye Wong (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1iwe6JQAGI).
Therkla: California by Savage Garden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0yf_7vSnOY).
Eugene/Roy/Horace: The Living Years by Mike and The Mechanics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqQM-HoFeEk) (If it wasn;t released years before OotS started, I'd have thought this song was written about the comic.)
V : Brain Damage by Pink Floyd. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1bgxfxchkQ)

I'll add others as I think of them.

EDIT:
Roy and Eric or Celia: Ordinary World by Duran Duran. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qxm_cY5jqmo)

Redcloak: The Living Daylights by Aha (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUGsSBaLrVw&feature=related) or View to a Kill by Duran Duran (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsiBhQ60rJE) work if you look at his motives.

O-Chul: Blue Jay Way by The Beatles suits him well. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ32e5vuWCc)

Miko and Roy (or Miko and Shojo if you take the romance out of the song): What If? by Kate Winslet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb1dy_PudEQ). (It probably works better for Shojo.)

The Saphire Guard and Shojo just before Azure City fell: Promises by Savage Garden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs-7tfx31gc). (This works if you read SoD. The "Patients and elated wisdom don't share a common phrase" line reminds me of a couple of RC's allies as well.)

Roy and Miko individually: You Can Still Be Free by Savage Garden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AQuiYPUBiE) (By the way, I do like this band a lot :smalltongue: .)

Belkar: Spite and Malace by Placebo (I didn't post a link because the song contains a lot of swearing).

Eugene/Roy/Horace: The Living Years by Mike and The Mechanics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqQM-HoFeEk) (If it wasn;t released years before OotS started, I'd have thought this song was written about the comic.)

Seriously? I can think of a couple of lyrics that would be highly relevant ("I know that I'm a prisoner to all my father held so dear," etc.) but the general theme of the song -- regretting not telling the people you love how much they meant to you while they were still alive -- so does not seem to be in the picture either for Roy's relationship with his dad or Eugene's with his own. I mean Eugene came to Roy telling him his time on this mortal coil was nearly up and Roy pretty much gave him the brush-off, Eugene says Fryon was more of a dad to him than Horace, Roy bargains with Eugene to stay away from his wife in the afterlife (knowing it will also keep him away from his son)...

Not that it's wrong, or anything, I just find it... surprising.

Only one that comes to mind for me is, stripped of any romantic (ick) undertones of "Do You Like It" by Our Lady Peace for Redcloak and Xykon:

I don't wanna be a puppet for you
Don't wanna bite the hand that's feeding
I don't wanna be a sucker for you, oh yes you
I hate myself for begging
I hate myself for staying
I hate myself for listening to you
Such a bitter, angry song.

And possibly Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" for Therkla to Elan:
I'll close my eyes, then I won't see
The love you don't feel when you're holding me
Morning will come and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't

I didn't necesarrily take The Living Years to be ablout telling people you care about them (I was thinking about other things with the Greenhilt familiy). Did you think the others fitted well? You're songs fit well.

Everytime I hear it I have the urge to go hug one of my parents.

Did you think the others fitted well?
I'm not familiar with all of them, but:

"Ordinary World" for Roy/Eric or Roy/Celia: Not bad at all, actually, that's one of my favorite songs, and the mellowness fits Roy nicely. (I remember making a mix tape with it on it, a long time ago, and my dad perking up when the song came on and asking who the band was. He was incredulous. "Duran Duran?! Really?" I still laugh at that.)

"Never Gonna Give You Up" for Elan/Haley: It's a little cheesy, but then so is Elan. (Please don't take this the wrong way. I like the song -- it's in my collection, and I remember the video from way back before it was an internet meme.)

"Right Here Waiting For You" for Elan/Haley: Seems to fit with their situation now (when they are apart and longing for one another) but probably wouldn't have occurred to me outside of it, because Elan is so... perky. I'd go with something like Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now."

I didn't take it the wrong way at all. (I'm not likely to pitch a fit because someone thinks a song I like is cheesy :smalltongue:). I first heard Ordinary World on VH1 (I think) where it was all DD songs, and I thought OW sounded completely different to their other things. Have you heard The Wedding Album? It has some really great songs (eg: Love Voodoo and Come Undone) and several dreadful songs (I hate Sin of the City and UMP). Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now is a great choice.

I just feel a mite hypocritical calling anyone's choice in music cheesy, given that I can still sing the DuckTales theme song from heart.
♫Life is like a hurricane...

Also, I have seen the broadway musical "Spamalot."

My defense on that one was it was actually on an assignment and I didn't have to pay for it, but there's no excuse for the former except that I still think it's fun to sing (and the Disney Afternoon official tape version had a few extra verses. Which I also know)

I first heard Ordinary World on VH1 (I think) where it was all DD songs, and I thought OW sounded completely different to their other things.
It does! That was part of the fun. I think the only other song of theirs he'd heard was "Rio," or something, and it's hard to reconcile. I don't know if he liked any songs in the 80's/early 90's that were released by anybody but... oh, say, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, or Don Henley. Liking Duran Duran would be as much of a shock as humming along to the New Kids On The Block.

Have you heard The Wedding Album? It has some really great songs (eg: Love Voodoo and Come Undone) and several dreadful songs (I hate Sin of the City and UMP). Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now is a great choice.
Nope, have to try it sometime. And thanks. :)

I've been thinking that "We Are" by Ana Johnson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jQEnt8aJ84) is really, really, creepily reminiscent of Vaarsuvius lately. I mean, just look at this, you can practically see something in every line... The rather desperate mood of the song helps as well.

See the devil on the doorstep now (my oh my)
Telling everybody oh just how to live their lives
Sliding down the information highway
Buying in just like a bunch of fools
Time is ticking and we can't go back (my oh my)

What about the world today
What about the place that we call home
We’ve never been so many
And we've never been so alone

[Chorus]
You keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands and come out clean
Fail to recognise the enemies within
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are, we are, we are

...

It’s all about power then
By taking control
Breaking the will
Breathing the soul
They suck us dry till there’s nothing left
My oh my, my oh my

...

Nah- that's really The New Cylon Theme Song. :smalltongue: Personally, I'd favour Reptile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8aIDWm7H6s).

:xykon: (with respect to :redcloak: :) Ruiner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0KmhFSfesU) by the Nine Inch Nails (lyrics (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nineinchnails/ruiner.html)).

You need to have Start of Darkness to get some of it, but the last minute or so, in particular, I think would go perfectly with a side of this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0448.html).

:belkar: : Firestarter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28ow4TLMTqM) by the Prodigy. (Self-explanatory really.)

:haley: : Hurt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO9dbmJ_2zU), as covered by Johnny Cash.

:elan: : Unbelievable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPGit-xFs1U), by EMF, or maybe Counting flowers on the wall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGXnjFgijhI), by Heatherly Eric.

I think the second song evokes an aspect of Elan that isn't often touched on that he actually has in common with Haley- he tends to get left behind. The first, well... that's everyone else's perspective.

:durkon: : Sysyphus, part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lbVe7ukIIs), by Pink Floyd.

:roy: : He Ain't Heavy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa3TEIdZkWA), by The Hollies.

I like your picks of Reptile, Ruiner and Firestarter; I'm not sure I like Hurt for Haley, but I'm not sure what I really like for her.
For Elan, I tend to think Beck (especially Loser) would work; I mean I like him as a character (who doesn't, really?) but if the shoe fits... And lots of Beck songs include lyrics similar to the Chaotic conscience.
For Vaarsuvius, it's all about REM - ITEOTWAWKI (And I Feel Fine)
The Hollies work for Roy generally, but I tend to hear Floyd's Comfortably Numb now that he's dead. King Missile, of course, plays the Belt of Gender Changing theme song.
Miko pretty much always put me in mind of L7... I can't put the name of the song in here and it's definitely NSFW, but suffice it to say it starts with something nasty and ends with "List."

I still want to do a tribute video for...
:belkar:,:haley:, Therkla: "Rogues Do It From Behind" by Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain (Belkar's mentioned simply because he would play like a WoW Rogue)

About the only song I could think of for him that doesn't mention Thor (since all the better ones I have would require Durkon to be more aggressive than he is)...
:durkon:: "Dublin Lullaby" by Captain Tractor
(We're gonna drink and fight and drink and fight and drink and fight some more...)

The classic Elan song...
:elan:: "What's My Age Again?" by Blink-182

At this stage of his/her character development, it seems to fit...
:vaarsuvius:: "I'm Going Slightly Mad" by Queen

While we're on the subject of :roy: and his dad, I couldn't help but think of the chorus to "The Bridge" by Queensryche:

You say, "Son, let's rebuild the past
I want another chance, I want to make it last"
You're begging me for a brand new start
Trying to mend a bridge that's been blown apart
But you know...
You never built it, Dad

This one's for the title alone:
:xykon:: "Bored and Extremely Dangerous" by Bad Religion
And while we're with that band...
:redcloak:: "Recipe For Hate" or "I Want To Conquer The World" by Bad Religion (though the general vein of "Down Rodeo" by Rage Against The Machine seems to work)
But wait... now that I think about it, "Incomplete", also by Bad Religion (is it any wonder I like this band?) would be better still, especially if you've read Start of Darkness:

Mother, Father
Look at your little monster
I'm a hero, I'm a zero
I'm the butt of the worst joke in history

... and that's just the first verse.

I wasn't sure whether to inlude this initially, but parts of Love Voodoo by Duran Duran from The Wedding Album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucOI1TQasCk) go well with Nale and Sabine. If viewed ironically, Heartbeat City by The Cars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mvwam3GLBY) fits Azure City. If you're pro-Goblin, You're the Voice by John Farnham (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99P7TTvpO1g) kind of suits Red Cloak.

Let me think for a moment. (My tastes in music are narrow, so I'm just choosing from my music collection.)

Hinjo - Minas Tirith, ROTK soundtrack. It's grand and powerful, as well as slightly sad and quiet in places.
Elan - Dancing Through Life, Wicked soundtrack.
Miko - I agree with mockingbyrd7 on "Beautiful Name", finally a softer look at Miko's good intentions.
Therkla - I agree with RosesOnConcrete on "Not that Girl", especially considering my pick for Elan.
Belkar - Another One Bites The Dust, by Queen?.
Roy - Hero, by Nickelback.
And V - 2112/Temples of Syrinx, by Rush. V's love of knowledge shines out in this one. :smalltongue:

Therkla - Queensryche "I Don't Believe in Love"
Nale - The Misfits "Die, Die My Darling"

:miko: The Hand That Feeds, definitely. My family has Rock Band and I'm the singer, so I sing this song a lot, and the lyrics could have been written for her.

You're keeping in step, in the line
With your chin held high, and you feel just fine
'Cause you do what you're told,
But inside your heart it is black and it's hollow and it's cold.

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you wanna change it?

What if this whole crusade's a charade,
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood which we dine,
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine?

(repeat chorus)

So naive,
I keep holding on to what I want to believe.
I could see,
But I keep holding on and on and on and on.

Will you bite the hand that feeds you?
Will you stay down on your knees?
(repeat last two lines ad infinitum--it's the only part I don't like.)

Therkla- "My Heart will Go On" from Titanic

Belkar- "Slaughter Your World" from Looking for Group

Xykon- "The Imperial March" from Empire Strikes Back

Elan and Haley- "A Whole New World" from Aladdin

Miko- "Fall of a Jedi" from Revenge of the Sith (That chourus that played when Anakin and Obi-Wan were fighting on Mustafar)

Nice selections. Particularly "Slaughter" and "March".

Anyway, mine...

For :belkar:: "Blood", My Chemical Romance. "Getting Away With Murder", Papa Roach (see? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBJaKrkklZQ)--not mine, BTW). "A Dangerous Mind", Within Temptation. Several songs from Queen come to mind: "Don't Stop Me Now", "Another One Bites the Dust". "Minority", Green Day.

:redcloak:: "What Have You Done", Within Temptation. "Animal I Have Become", Three Days Grace.

Not a character, but the battle for Azure City: "Our Solemn Hour", Within Temptation.

:xykon:: "A Dangerous Mind", Within Temptation. "When You're Evil", Voltaire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZvZxxE9OX0). "I Can't Decide", Scissor Sisters. "The Game", Motorhead (remember his ending speech in SoD?). "Bad to the Bone". "You Know My Name", Chris Cornell.

:haley:/:elan:: "Hold Me Tonight", Red Grammer. "All I Need", Within Temptation. "You Raise Me Up", Josh Groban's cover for Elan, Celtic Women's for Haley. "Alone", Heart (for when Haley's feelings were unrequited).

:vaarsuvius:: "One Step Closer", Linkin Park.

Julio Scoundrel: "The Ballad of Serenity" ("you can't take the sky from me").

Shojo: "I Fought the Law", Green Day.

:roy: to Celia: "You Make me feel So Young", Frank Sinatra.

:roy:'s fall: "O Danny Boy", Celtic Women (duh).

"The Hand That Feeds" fits both :miko: (as Amy pointed out earlier) and also :redcloak:, IMO.

Personally, I associate all of the Azure City soldiers with songs by Sabaton from The Art of War album. Except for 'Ghost (http://www.elyricsworld.com/ghost_division_lyrics_sabaton.html) Division (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NydGSPgUcO8)'. That's Belkar  .

For :vaarsuvius:'s recent changes I think of "No more Mr. Nice Guy" by Alice Cooper.

I only thought about this while discussing Miko's fall the other day, but You Don't Care About Us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfrf8ccOKdo) suited Miko as far as her views on Shojo went before she killed him.

EDIT: I was just listening to Suffer the Children by Tears for Fears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTcIB0p5_Ms&feature=related), and I couldn't help thinking that a lot of it applied to Eugene and his children.

:elan: :haley: - 'I Love You Always Forever'. I'm listening to it now, and it screams out 'Elan and Haley'.

:nale: :sabine: - I'm going to have to go with 'My Bloody Valentine' by Good Charlotte. Because it kinda symbolizes just how horrifically in love they are. Edit: TAINTED LOVE. Need I say more?

I never thought about Tainted Love, V. (The Maralyn Manson version would fit better then the Glorias Jones or Soft Cell versions, though.) I know Azure City is a place rather then a character, but Heartbeat City by The Cars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mvwam3GLBY) makes me think of it (all you need to really do is repace the words "heartbeat" and "Jackie" with "Azure" and "Hinjo").

I have but one recommendation for :redcloak: :

Riders of Doom (The Riddle of Steel) from Conan the Barbarian movie. I mean, couldn't you see Redcloak having some PTSD episode while he raids Azure City and then going AWOL on any Azurite he can find? You have to admit it would be awesome.

:xykon: really needs two theme songs. As Start of Darkness show us, there are two sides to Xykon. The comic sociopath, and the scary as all hell sociopath. The first one would clearly be Re: Your Brains by Jon Coulton. Still looking for something for the second. Probably Ave Satani from The Omen. You know, that creepy song that follows Damien everywhere he goes?

St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion) by John Parr ( http://www.lyricsdepot.com/john-parr/st-elmos-fire.html ) fits brilliantly with Belkar starting at the one where he starts talking to Shojo.

O Chul: Pain(a surprisingly good song)

I think you may need to clarify what song you actually mean with a title that common.
2Pac, Alice Cooper, Biohazard, Blackfield, Catherine Wheel, Dio, Doro, Dream, Dry Kill Logic, Elton John, Everlast, Four Star Mary, Jimmy Eat World, Kittie, Millencolin, Neuroticfish, Ohio Players, Oingo Boingo, Onslaught, Planet X, Prince Paul, Reamonn, Slipknot, Soulfly, Stereomud, Stream of Passion, Sworn Enemy, The Berzerker, The Pillows, The Used, Three Days Grace, Tiger Army,Type O Negative, Velvet Acid Christ and Venom
All these bands have a song called "Pain" and I would hate for people to assume you're referring to the one made by "Oingo Boingo", unless of course you are. :smalltongue:
