I just want to know: why is the limit for characters in the signature so ridiculously low (500)?

I would assume that it's to keep signatures from being insanely longer than the posts they accompany.

It's actually not. For starters it is more than twice the size of the last forum software we used. And it allows 1000 characters including bbcode.

The character limit in signatures is there to help stop, you guessed it, long and/or large signatures.

Be aware that the current board software has two limits, total number of characters not including bbcode and total number of characters including bbcode (which is much larger) and yet, the limit we used to have on YaBB for the total number of characters including bbcode was much smaller than the limit we currently have not including bbcode.

500 is bigger than most forums I go on.

Normally it's around 250/255.

Quite a few other forums have an insanely lower limit.

Because it's a signature, not the next great American novel.

And, if memory serves, about the time the limit was implemented, there were people posting two-sentence posts with signatures that took up the better part of a page of text.

Because even with the "ridiculously low" limit, I (and many others) turn off sig viewing. Make them any bigger, and... :smalleek:
