I was just rereading some of the OotS strips, and noticed that when Haley can't talk, the words she says can really be translated into English.
Is this old news, or have people not noticed it before?

Old news, yup. An interesting thing to notice nonetheless.

Actually, Haley doesn't quite speak in gibberish. She speaks in cryptograms. :smalltongue: Apparently a different one was used per strip, if I heard correctly. I'm not sure if anyone went and deciphered them all on their own, or if someone just posted the translations from the book, but I believe at some point someone made the translations available online somewhere.

Here is where the translations are found.

A simple search through the Stickied Topics turned this up in a few seconds.

Well, it looks like you joined a while after that was a big deal on the boards. Certainly excusable.

Yeah, this is not so bad. We only get this like every second month, there are far worse recurring threads.

By the way here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0248.html) Belkar hints that the gibberish is cryptograms.

While it was going on there were sometimes a bit of a race to be the first one to post the translation on the boards. The hardcore did it by hand, the lazy googled "cryptogram solver" and copy-pasted.

There's an actual thread somewhere where someone translated it all, too.

As a side-note, the book compilations also include pages with translations.

I suspect rather a lot of us were nerdy enough to work out the cryptograms ourselves, before people started regularly posting translations within hours of a comic's release. I know I did. I also had a bunch of friends who told me "screw it, I can wait for someone else to do it." Usually, of course, that someone else was me.
I seem to recall there being a site or a downloadable app somewhere that actually solves the cryptograms for you (unless you have OCR you'd have to type them anyhow), but really, where's the fun in that? And besides, when you do the cryptograms yourself you also get to have a private chuckle when you notice that Rich made a typo which got transcribed to the cryptogram and because it wasn't as directly-noticeable, stuck around a while. I caught about 2 or 3 of those, and I probably missed some.

They're also translated in No Cure for the Paladin Blues.
