Hi Everyone

Just wondering, I'm designing a new campaign setting for my gaming group and we're using gods from mythology for each of the races. The Dwarves have the norse gods, the Humans have Greek gods, etc. What I'm wondering is should I use the real names for these gods (ie. Thor, Zeus, etc) or should I rename them?

There is also a small chance I might publish this setting one day.

No reason not to use the real gods' names; I'd just make an effort to distinguish both from Earth mythology (Zeus's rutting) and OotS' take on them.

Nobody has copyright over the mythical Greek/Norse/etc. gods, if that's what you're worried about. Heck, RPGs like Scion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scion_(role-playing_game)) use them all the time.

I'd rename them anyway, since you probably won't want to use real life polytheistic religions as-is. They are a mess, hardly the neatly organized RPG-gods of DnD.

This can be a good argument for using real religions. This week, Athena and Ares hate each other. Last week, they were fighting on the same side. Next week, Athena will be fighting Aphrodite, and Ares will be off doing something else. It allows for lots of plot-hooks, having a messy religion.

Besides, there are a freakin' buttload (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_gods) of greek deities.

No nice, clean deities arranged by domain and alignments, all clearly represented.
