The Embodiment of Song Contest

"Some days there won't be a song in your heart. Sing anyway." - Emory Austin

This contest is to describe and design a fantastic location--city, dungeon, or even just a forest glade. However, there is a catch: the location must be based upon music--whether you take an existing song and transform it into a location, or build up the Plane of Song is immaterial, just as long as music and song are fundamental to your creation.

The contest begins with the posting of this thread and will continue until Noon, November 1st, 2008 (Pacific US Time). Please remember, as always, to follow the general contest guidelines. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?f=16&a=19)

The Rules:
1. You will be creating a location, some interesting inhabitants, some treasure, and a means of tapping into the music inherent within the location--whether through a feat, through magic, through a Prestige Class, or merely through being in the right place.

2. Your entry must include the following:
A description of the location (geography, relevant creatures, special locations, etc.)
A description of some interesting inhabitants native to the area (with stats, if appropriate).
A description of some valuable treasure on the island (with stats, if appropriate).
A description of some means of tapping into the music of the location (with stats, if appropriate).
Entries should be set in the standard 3.5e system and D&D cosmology, and not any particular setting (e.g. Forgotten Realms or Eberron.) Try to avoid referencing non-core/SRD books where possible, but obviously, this contest may require some reference to non-core material.
Each new entry should be started on a new thread here on the Homebrew board. Put the tag [Embodiment of Song] in front of the title of that thread. Any thread without this tag will not be officially entered.
Post on this thread to let me know that you have completed your [Embodiment of Song] entry. I'll try to keep a post with all the entries listed in one place for easy reference.

Categories of voting and judgment will include the following:
Best Overall
Best Inhabitants
Best Treasure
Best Means of Accessing the Music
Funniest Entry

Also, the Judge's Favorite award will be handed out by myself for the entry I like the most. Everyone is eligible for every award--there is no need to indicate anything.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to post them to this thread. Good luck!

I already have a Bard PrC devoted to music - I'll just have to do a location think/write-up and some polishing, which shoudln't take long tomorrow.

The fact that I made a typo indicates I should sleep now though.

Well well well...interesting.

I feel like I should really enter this, but I'm not sure if I have enough time to make a whole locale as well as my campaign, setting, rune caster project, considering how busy I already am.

If I'm struck by some awesome inspiration I may make something.

This grabbed my attention fast--with my love of music, it's calling to me something fierce. The problem is that I don't think I have the time for this, but...so many ideas...

I've never tried coming up with treasure or classes before...are they required for the location, or can you just make a location? (I'm rather new when it comes to world-building stuff like this, and items/classes/monsters are a bit over my head).

I'm glad this contest is here. No offense to dman, but the current PrC contest is not that interesting for me. Creating a PrC that probably won't affect a game I play/run just isn't that gripping. That and I think this game needs more music-related magic.

Ideas brewing...

Interesting, I've got a couple of concepts, not sure what I'll do for creatures but it's a great idea.

I have a good idea, I think I'm going to turn a song into a Plane. Does the place have to majorly incorporate song, i.e. music is a major factor in the area, or can it just be based off of a preexisting song? Would both be sufficient?

Can two people co-create a setting, as a group? Me and SilentNight may create something if allowed.

A description of some valuable treasure on the island (with stats, if appropriate).

You left a word unchanged. =p

Good to see this, these sorts of holistic contests get my juices going. Remains to be seen if I can get everything together in time (I wasn't quite ready for the deadline for the Island contest when it came around) but this'll certainly be occupying my thoughts.

Are we allowed to submit our entries and later change them? At the moment, I think I'm mostly satisfied with my Dunes of Song (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92965), but I'm sure I'll think of something to add before the month is out.

Oy, that took a damned long time, but I'm pretty much as done as I can be.

What floats?
Apples? Small rocks? Bread? Churches? Churches! (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5138960#post5138960)

Sadly, I haven't had enough time to pull together my entry....which is a pity, since I was really getting into this one. :(

You should keep doing these, milord. They're fun, and since they're unlikely to do another "official" contest any time soon....:smalltongue:

Okay, so there's nothing in the rules for this contest about multiple entries and since the general rules say it's okay, I figured "What the hey." If it's only one entry per contestant, feel free to disregard this one.

Now, I present Llamen's Option B) Lake Innis (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5208717#post5208717)

Here is The Opera Hall (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5208929#post5208929), co-creation of myself and SilentNight. It is far more of a focus of story and setting than an adventure site.

The deadline is noon tomorrow. You'd better hurry.Whoops, didn't read that part. Well consider me out unless the deadline gets extended or something (I spot four entries).

Anyway, the simple premise was enough to give me inspiration that I can use in campaigns if I need to.

That is weak cake. I spent a lot more time on the unlinked one.

Aerin'al Hauri (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94363). Tada!

You can vote however you like, but this was the method I was going for. Votes I receive that have no qualifiers for categories will be for "best overall only".

I found time to read the entries! Woo!

My votes:
Best Overall: The Opera Hall
Best Inhabitants: Aerin'al Hauri
Best Treasure: The Dunes of Song
Best Means of Accessing the Music: The Opera Hall
Funniest Entry: Dunes of Song, I suppose. Had some funny knowledge comments, and the spell 'Transmute Sand to Sand.'
