With the double damage from using this action is it doubled before or after the roll and what is the mix of this with a Crit?

Example*: a Small Spear (d6+2) is set vs a charging horse and hits with a Crit

*This happened in tonights game and the end result was a very dead horse (and a wrecked carriage) but we were a bit fuzzy on the terms of the action

Eh, normal doubling rules. X2 X2 = X3.

More specifically, your damage would be:

1d6 (base)+1d6 (set against charge)+1d6 (crit)+6

Ok, Thanks for the clarification

Honestly! Who actually uses those rules?! Apparently you....No, I kid. I'd have to agree with them, tripling it sounds correct.

Ahhhh D&D math. 2x2x=3.

4x4x=?? What? Betting on 7.

However, yes, they are correct.

Are you kidding me? It isn't that complicated; it just looks that way because WotC knows that people are afraid of percentages.

x2 = +100%
x3 = +200%
x4 = +300%

x4x4 = +300%+300% = +600% = x7.

It's really simple.

Edit: To clarify, these aren't multiplications at all, they're just disguised as multiplications because when you only apply one, it works the same way.

4x4=2x2x2x2=5:smallamused: only in mathematical governed worlds is it equal to 16

Ah, but, x4x4 couldn't possible be x5 without x4 equalling x3 :smalltongue:

Otherwise by substituation yours would become:
x4x4 = x2x2x2x2
Substitute x2x2 for x3:
x4x4 = x3x3

But yes, as Tsotha-lanti said, D&D uses hidden percentages instead of real multiplication.

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Any form of maths is not my strong point - i can get muddled up on real simple stuff some times.

Dear god, that's where that comes from? It makes so much more sense! They should have just shown them as percentages to begin with, and saved themselves the jokes about "special DnD math"

Depends. I've had groups who say, "Roll one die and multiply the result by 3", and had other groups who say, "Roll your damage three times". I personally prefer the former option, as it's quicker.

But the latter is much, much more fun, especially with the 3x and 4x crit weapons.
