Isn't it AMAZING the things you notice when you read a strip for the second time?

For example, in #144 i never noticed the flying belkar till i reread it for the second(or was it third) time!

My favorite "Subtle" detail is the steadily dimming outdoor light after the battle.

It wasn't obvious from one strip to the next, but over the course of several days, it became clear the sun was setting on Azure City...

Well, that was freakin' grim, now wasn't it!

The last time I did it there were 5:smallsmile:

fresh ones just waiting for me:smalltongue:

I never noticed Thog changing into the Hulk in #387 untill I reconfigured my monitor. And noticed his quote about his pants turning purple.

It has now even become my favorite comic to date, with the huge amount of jokes in it.

Yep, it took a second reading to catch the subtlety in 571 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0571.html). When the lizardmen port in, they say "-port.". and when they leave, they say "tele-". Apparently, in the OotS-verse, teleport activates halfway through the incantation.

The first time I read through the comic, I was too blind to see that Haley liked Elan until around strip 400. The second time, I noticed/understood a lot more of the things she did or said, and their thinly veiled meanings.

If you read the comic where the Order gets their prophecies from the Oracle (#331 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0331.html)), look at the cutaway panels to Xykon and his horde very carefully, you'll see they're actually arranged to be a single, complete picture (partially masked by the intervening Roy/Oracle panels). I only noticed that today. An excellent touch!

I find it pretty cool when I'm looking through the book compilations and I can see things I've never noticed before because the detail is better. For example, the first panel of #450 has a lot of little things, and I didn't look very closely at them online, but in the book I can more clearly see Tsukiko casting a spell on the left side, and Belkar on his pile of hobgoblins, etc.

I really don't get your point. If one does three single panels with just a few guys in each, how is that more work that creating a larger picture and then editing out sections and rearranging it to fit behind other panels? I mean - you could leave out all the dragon wings and elements and just have Xykon in the first one...etc

At best, the amount of drawing is the same for the three panels as the characters are the same size as they would be anyway. Given that Rich has templates for all the main characters, having to cut and edit would make more work, not less, surely? :smallconfused:

P.S. If I'm going to be all pedantic and sad, I should also say that it's 'separate' not 'seperate'... /Pedantry :smalltongue:

I just re-read OtOoPCs and realized two things for the first time:

In this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0216.html) strip, Roy explains that he only got a C- in his Attack of Opportunity class and in the prequel we learn that

the night before his AOO test, Roy couldn't study because of the party going on and his dad showing up, telling him about Xykon and the Oath.

Also in OtOoPCs:

Page 21, when Elan announces Sir Francis to the "wretched hive of scum and villainy" looks just like the bandit king from the bandit arc.

In one of the recent comics, I didn't notice Kazumi crying when Durkon told her the baby was alright until it was mentioned on the forums (It doesn't help that I'm very unobservant when reading comics).

But yeah, I laughed so hard when I first caught the "I rolled a 22!" when I reread the comic.

So remember kids, math is very important. Just think how much sooner the comic could have ended if that guy made his save and defeated Redcloak!

But the sheer amount of detail, time, and effort put into this comic astounds me. Who says a stick figure comic should take less time to make? It's one of the reasons OOTS is my favorite webcomic.

Here's one: One of the paladins that Xykon accidentally views with his Teevo (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0415.html) is Sir Francois, Elan's former liege from On The Origin of PCs.

Also in that same strip, the Teevo picks up "Frudu" with "the Ming".... Frudu also appears in On The Origin as one of the potential party-members (along with a Gandalfy wizard) that rejects the offer to join Roy's team.

:smallsigh: They are related. Each member of that group is equal to an OotS member in a manner. Soon is Roy, since they both are leaders and have the same alignment. Dorukan, with his use of arcane magic, is connected to V. And Girard is, Elan. Lirian, I think, is connected to Durkon because they both use divine magic, while the halfling whose name I don't know is equal to Haley, since she has romantic feelings to Girard, who seems to be represented by Elan in the OotS and carries a bow. Belkar is Kraagor, who seems to be a 'mean' person and not loved, just as Belkar.

Also, we can get clues by examining how each member of the Order of Crayon(was this the name?) are related to each other. But I am to lazy to search for them! :P

I just noticed in this comic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0089.html) that Haley calls Roy a corpse-to-be

A general insult, but still, its there

How do you know it's Roy and Haley, exactly?

How do you know it's Roy and Haley, exactly?

In the seventh panel they refer to each other by name

"Wait, I think I've got it. Roy, do you want us to go forwards, or backwards." (Obviously Giant forgot to end that in a question mark

"Forward, Haley."

"Right, lets go then"

How do you know it's Roy and Haley, exactly?

Actually, from the tone I'm almost certain Belkar was the one to say 'corpse-to-be'. Yes, Haley and Roy called each other by name two panels earlier but that doesn't mean Haley was necessarily the one who responded to Roy's complaint when they all crashed together again.

Here's something else I've found. :)

Way back when that first came out, Rich responded to someone who thought it was Haley by saying that Haley would not have called Roy a "corpse-to-be."

Which member of the Order would have, he seemed to consider too obvious to state.

I think it's one of those phrases that's gained a little bit of traction outside the South. Probably due to characters like Looney Tunes' Foghorn Leghorn (who's supposed to be Southern) using it in nationally distributed media.

A great example of how the story arc is planned far in advance, Rich foreshadowed V's murder of Lord Kubota nearly 200 strips earlier (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0399.html).

I'm not so sure it would be premediated murder in the traditional sense, but it does give you an idea as to where V is coming from and why (s)he disintegrated Kubota. When it comes to recurring villains, V favors expedience over justice.

Murder does not have to be premeditated. Second degree murder is a possible charge. And the charge Belkar was on, till Roy persuaded Hinjo to downgrade it (we know this because Tsusiko mentions it, and Belkar suggests even 2nd degree is a "rip-off" since he premediated.)

Any amount of celestial for Haley seems a bit of a stretch.

However, angels (not half-angels) with torn-off wings, cast down to the material plane, exist in the Eberron setting (Sharn City of Towers has, I think, stats for them) They specialize in building cults that worship them.

The both have baggy eyes (though it probably just mean they're old), apart from that I don't see it either.

One from Start of Darkness, I didn't catch the first time (or even the second time) I read the book:
With his dying breath Right-Eye says "Goodbye ... Redcloak" after a lifetime of addressing Redcloak as 'Brother', effectively telling him he no longer consider him family or even someone he know (afterall he's not using Redcloak's given name either) anymore. When I caught it the third time, it made Xykon's final smack-down all the more crushing. Must've grown so accustomed to 'Redcloak' I glanced over it.

Maybe someone noticed it before me, I don't know (I'm only around for 2 days), but Roy had no chance of defeating Xykon over Azure City. Xykon hasn't been within 1000 feet of Girard's Gate yet.

(Also: does this remind anyone to Stavromula Beta?)

hamishspence
2008-11-22, 07:56 AM
Could have happened exactly same way as last time- Xykon dying, Redcloak's holy symbol, the phylactery, regenerating him. It didn't, but it could have. Prophesies don't always rule out certain things happening.

Hydro Globus

hamishspence

Since Roy is going full tilt at Xykon before he falls, Knowing he will regenerate doesn't mean you don't have to try and kill him temporarily anyway- an epic sorcerer can do a lot of damage.

Also, they don't know what it is, only that it exists, so they might not know to go after Redcloak.

Hydro Globus
2008-11-22, 08:06 AM
I thought following the Monster in the Darkness would be obvious enough. And it usually sticks with Redcloak when Xykon isn't around.

(OK, OK, I'm convinced! Fine, Xykon could have been disabled by Roy.:smallsmile:)

In the most recent strip, the background in the panels with Belkar's vision goes from a warm beige colour to lavender and to dark blue before - WHAM! - going red. :) Very neat. ^^

hamishspence
2008-11-22, 10:06 AM
I highly doubt it, but, the prophesy cannot be citied as reason for Roy Not disabling Xykon. If roy was very very lucky, he could disable him, without violating the prophesy (as long as Redcloak escapes).

Point I'm making is- the prophesy reason is not a good reason for Roy losing. Xykon being 7+ levels higher? Thats a good reason.

The paladins that hauled away Miko in strip #411 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0411.html) were O-chul and Lien. Since Hinjo is also in the strip, we're looking at the only members of the Sapphire Guard to have survived the battle for Azure City. Thanh, the only other survivor we've seen, wasn't at the battle because he'd been serving as a messenger to Nowhere (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0535.html) at the time. (Note that his presence manages to thwarts two very familiar assassins.)

Edit: In The Trial of Belkar Bitterleaf (Abridged) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0420.html), Shojo says to Belkar:

"That says to me that perhaps your time with the Mark has taught you something about yourself. That maybe, you're a better person than before it was put on you."
