I hear they're making a movie based on Anabasis. That means 10,000 Spartans.

Edit: Sorry, that's 9,999 Spartans and 1 Athenian

If I recall correctly, the Ten Thousand were made up of mercenary units that hailed from many parts of Greece, not just Sparta.

Probably not, but the spelling error makes it hard to tell. I would be fine with the movie if it hadn't butchered so much of the story...

Various members of the Peloponnesian League, mainly Spartan. For purposes of simplifing the plot it's easier to say they're all Spartan, aside from Xenophon, who's something of a main charactor and his Athenian-ness (Possibly a word) is rather important to the backstory.

Do you mean the actual battle of Thermopylae or Frank Miller's graphic novel about it upon which the movie was based.

Note that nowhere in the movie did it say "based on true events" or something.

From Wikipedia:

According to Xenophon, the Ten Thousand were composed of:

* 4000 hoplites under Xenias the Arcadian, until he left the army in Syria
* 1500 hoplites and 500 light infantry under Proxenus the Boeotian, until he left the army in Syria
* 1000 hoplites under Sophaenetus the Stymphalian
* 500 hoplites under Socrates the Achaean[citation needed] (not to be confused with the philosopher)
* 300 hoplites and 300 peltasts under Pasion the Megaran
* 1000 hoplites, 800 Thracian peltasts, and 200 Cretan archers (and more than 2000 men who came from Xenias and Proxenus when they deserted) under Clearchus of Sparta,
* 300 hoplites under Sosis the Syracusan (Anabasis book 1, chp 2, IX)
* 1000 hoplites under Artbell the Arcadian
* 700 hoplites under Chirisophus the Spartan
* 1000 hoplites and 500 Thessalian peltasts under Menon (Anabasis book 1, chp 2, XI)
* 400 Greek deserters from Artaxerxes' army

The actual battle, I have never read the graphic novel. And I believe that if you make a movie based on historical events, it needs to bear some semblance to the truth. Think of all the people who now think that the battle was literal fought by only 300 Spartans and 10,000 Persians.

Does this really belong in Oots? Seems like it belongs more in media discussions.

It was based on the graphic novel. Heck, it even says on the box, 'based on the graphic novel by...'*.

*May not necessarily be true, but darnit, that's what I remember!

In 600, we will see The Snarl randomly break out of its prison to destroy the world, kill all its populace and unmake the Gods.

I remember seeing a thread once titled "Saw 300", and my first thought was of a bunch of Spartans tearing through death traps a Bond villain would be ashamed of.

Do you means that World War II did NOT end when Captain America defeated Adolph Hitler in a nazi mecha suit? Because if so, people should learn to be critical about what he is going to see, as opposite to eat down everything.

Well, it ended when the Unknown Soldier killed Hitler, made it look like a suicide, and snuck out of the base.

The Cap/Hitler fight was important, but it wasn't the climatic battle, any more than the time Atomic Robo punched out the Nazi robots was.
